Location Independent Blog | Live and Work Anywhere You Choose : Weekend Update: Introducing The LIP Thumbs Up And An Important P.S.

Hey Jessica - we're not claiming to be the only location independent resource out there. This is aimed at helping people who *don't* necessarily already have their own audience or voice within the LI community but who have or want to create a valuable resource and would like to spread the word about it. This is a way of ensuring that we can help use the platforms we've already created to promote the best of these without compromising our own brand. When somebody chooses to use the term "LIP" or "location independent" in their brand/domain name, to some people this may imply some sort of association with our site/company - we want to ensure that it's clear to our audience & readership where this relationship does actually exist - and where it does, we'll aim to promote & support the resources as much as possible. The people you've mentioned already have their own audiences/platforms and obviously don't need our "thumbs up" to continue doing the great jobs they're doing.

Location Independent Blog | Live and Work Anywhere You Choose : 8 Lightweight Alternatives To Keep Your Luggage To A Minimum

Good question Jez! I have been back-and-forth over getting an iPhone for months (I *so* want one). But as you mention, buying one from O2 (or even Orange & Voda now they're in on the game) gets prohibitively expensive as soon as you start to roam with it & are charged data roaming fees. I checked these out and it's like £10 per 1MB or something silly like that. The only alternative that I can come up with is to go for the iPod Touch instead...and when you're overseas just connect wirelessly. It does pretty much what the iPhone does except of course the phone functions but if you're using wireless to connect, you can always the use the Skype app. For me, I think that'll be the best way to go since I'd probably be connecting wirelessly overseas anyway, in which case I don't need the phone/GSM functionality.

Link fixed, thanks Lis. The Nike's would probably stand up to light hiking (we both climbed up Lion's Head in Cape Town in ours) - although they're not the most structured/supportive of shoes so that's something to consider for hiking over rougher terrain.

Hey Colin - you're right, the Vibram's should probably have a bigger mention given the great stuff people say about them but I haven't tried them yet so I'd be guessing! Good to hear your thoughts on them...been meaning to get a pair for ages. Not tried the mi-fi yet - that's from Verizon in the US right? Would be interested to know how/if it travels too with roaming charges etc. Anyone else tried it?

Location Independent Blog | Live and Work Anywhere You Choose : Lessons Learned On The Road That Benefit A Stay-At-Home Lifestyle

Unfortunately, I don't... These days we think carefully about what value we get from the money we spend - as I *hate* flying (and yes, I know that *is* ironic coming from a nomadic LIP!!!) - if I had the money to spend on 1st class flights, I probably would. That's why we sometimes choose to fly business class because the additional room, ability to do some work on the laptop, the lounge access etc. etc. makes it valuable enough for us to spend the extra to do so. First class might be a little extravagant but hey, we all need a bit of extravagance in our lives sometimes :)

Location Independent Blog | Live and Work Anywhere You Choose : Lifestyle Design And Location Independence: A Reality Check

True - there's a very big cult of "on your own" in the blogosphere with corporations & companies being seen as the baddies. I know quite a few people who've tried the entrepreneurial thing and found it really wasn't them and ended up going the other way - back to a job (in fact my brother is currently considering this too). Many lifestyle designers would likely throw their arms up in horror - but in most cases it was a conscious decision to enable them to live the lifestyle they felt happier with.

It's interesting you should say that - I think people who aspire to "do what they love" often forget that there are also some pretty mundane aspects to that and it isn't always the razmattazz and exciting stuff, they expect it to be. Focusing 100% on whatever you are doing is also an interesting concept - and something I struggle with!! I think quite a few entrepreneurs would struggle too but it's the way to go if you really want to achieve something special. What's your new CD???

Did you find that too? Once you've got used to your location and all the new-ness has become routine, your life becomes much the same as before in many ways. I do find however that location does play quite a big role in my moods and ability to think & feel how I want. I'd much rather wake up to the sun, a beach and a warm breeze than grey, cold drizzling rain!

Yes you are right Tina - and I think we experienced that when we quit the rat race and first became location independent. I reckon it was in about our 3rd or 4th location that we realised that location doesn't actually matter when it comes down to it - wherever you are, things are often much the same. But it takes a while to realise it!

I agree Nate - being grateful for what you have is important but that doesn't stop us all wanting more. And I think that can be very healthy at times - although in the past I have fallen into the trap of wanting more and not stopping to appreciate what I already have. As ever, it's finding the balance or the harmony between the two, which is the key!

You're so right Cath - the ability to think & feel the way you want either proactively or as a response to situations is such a valuable skill to develop. If you can do that, then happiness is only a "state" away! Having said that, if you're living in a place which inspires you, achieving a happy state can come much easier.
