WTHITV.com | Terre Haute, Indiana : Big boat begins trip to sea

"Faith - Wilmington DE" Why Wilmington Delaware if he lives in, and built the boat in, Poland Indiana? Has he incorporated it in the State of Delaware for some reason? Or just doesn't want to claim to be from here when he goes wherever? :(

WTHITV.com | Terre Haute, Indiana : Old depot could see new life

I can remember this building having two uses in my lifetime. One as a pool hall and the other as storage for a local plastics manufacturing plant (Hagen's). It would be nice to see it in its original design but have to wonder how it would cost nearly half a million dollars to restore it to such a condition. It's not a large building.

WTHITV.com | Terre Haute, Indiana : Firefighter killed in car accident | wthitv.com

Seventy-one percent of America's firefighters are volunteers. When we lose one of these special people, it hurts all firefighters. These people, both men and women, leave their families and sometimes their jobs to protect our own homes, lives and livelihoods when the call comes in for their help. It doesn't matter if that call is two o'clock in the morning or in the middle of their daughter's music recital, they go when they are needed. When you need them, they are there. For a small, local volunteer fire department to lose one of their own in this manner is heartbreaking to all firefighters of this nation, paid and volunteer. All are professional in their conduct and response to your emergencies. To coldly and callously respond to this tragedy with a two word comment "seat belt" shows someone thinks they know it all, when they know little in reality. I can not imagine how the firefighters of the West Union Community Fire Protection District feel at this moment, other than a deep sense of loss not only to themselves but to their own families and to the family of Mr Stone. My heartfelt condolences go out to each of them in this time of loss and grief. It is at this time when the surrounding volunteer fire departments will step up and take over duties of the West Union CFPD till after the funeral of Mr Stone. This is what firefighters and volunteer fire departments do in a time of need - they step up and give their time so others can go on in life.

I can not imagine the heartbreak and pain these families must be going through, both the Shook and Griffin families. It is not up to us to point blame or make accusations (as has happened on the Facebook page for WTHI) but to think of the losses and heartache for both of these families. The Griffin family will also feel this heartache, we mustn't forget them in this tragedy as well. Prayers for both of the families.

Have you seen the title of this news story? "City says chickens violate code" It isn't me you have to convince, it's the City of Terre Haute. They say your chickens violate city code - which I guess would make my opinion from two years ago as valid today as it was then. But then again, it is (and was) just an opinion.

While the online application may be faster and reduce the amount of actual paperwork, the applicant must report to their local police agency ( or sheriff's office if you have a rural address ) to pay the licensing fee as well as have your fingerprints taken. This isn't a one-stop license to carry handgun completed from the comfort of your sofa. :)

WTHITV.com | Terre Haute, Indiana : Accident closes U.S. 41 Southbound

The truck driver (any holder of a commercial driver's license) is required to take a drug and alcohol test in an accident involving injury - not only death. This driver would have been taken to the nearest hospital by motor carrier enforcement officers who would ensure those test were conducted before releasing the driver from their custody. The alcohol limit for any commercial driver is .04 regardless if the person is driving a commercial vehicle at the time of testing. This driver will automatically lose his CDL for at least one year, if this is a first time offense - this is Federal Law. If there is a 2nd offense on his driving record of a fatal accident, he's lost his CDL privileges for life. Other offenses such as refusal to take an alcohol test, failure to appear, put out of service, having an alcohol content of greater than .04, leaving the scene of an accident.. all of these would combine with this fatal accident to disqualify the truck driver from holding a CDL for life as well. This was a stupid accident, one that could have been and should have been avoided. I don't care what fell off of his seat - you don't take your eyes off the road in a busy traffic situation for anything. The number one goal of ANY driver should be getting from Point A to Point B in a safe manner. Commercial drivers are held to a much higher standard than any other driver on America's highways for the simple reason when an accident such as this occurs, the general driving public automatically blame all truck drivers as the villain. Some accidents are just that - accidents. This accident however seems to have been most preventable. For that there is no excuse. This comment is not meant as an excuse but an explanation that truck drivers are held accountable for their actions - much more than the average Joe driving his car. This mistake will cost this truck driver not only his current job but his livelihood as well, perhaps even his freedom to move about in society as a free man. This was a senseless tragedy for which there will never be full understanding nor any way to bring back a life taken from us. http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/rules-regulations/admini...

The right lane of westbound I-70 is closed from the 25 to the 23 1/2 mile marker for freight cleanup. A state crew along with a salvage team are on-site putting spilled freight from the one trailer that broke open into a roll-off dumpster that is sitting in the right lane of the interstate. There were still several hundred cases lying in the water and ditch at about 11 a.m. Friday morning.

How can you blame a freak accident, as a 3 foot diameter tree falling across the lanes of an interstate in pitch black dark, as anything but an act of God? Please do tell me how the road surface would contribute to this?? Granted there have been quite a few accidents and deaths on the stretch of I-70 between Terre Haute and Indianapolis. But this accident? Unless some person was out there felling lumber on the interstate, there would have been zero chance to avoid this. This is one accident that couldn't have been avoided whether the road surface was smooth as glass or pitted and hole filled as it is now. I-70 as the deadliest interstate stretch in the US? Not even close. I-95 in Florida has had that distinction for many years. I-65 in Kentucky is deadliest in this area with 7 deaths so far this year. As for this accident? How does one avoid a tree falling in the road at night? Condolences for the family of the driver killed and prayers for the emergency workers who had to deal with this tonight.

Agreed. This tiny budget cut could have been taken where no one would have noticed but this administration is bound and determined to make it seem as if the sky is falling. An 85 billion dollar budget cut stretched out over a ten year period within a government that has a 3.2 trillion dollar budget for this year alone should have been able to shrug off this spending cut like a flea to an elephant. You're right, the President and his entire administration are cutting where it's most visible and praying no one notices they're doing it to themselves instead of actually caring for America. Keep giving our budget dollars to foreign governments while our own people are unemployed. Keep borrowing more and more money from China so you can give it away to people who would not work if the jobs were available. And please, Mr President, please do blame all of this on everyone except yourself.. because God knows you're perfect in your own mind.

WTHITV.com | Terre Haute, Indiana : Recession hampers some scholarships

Thank goodness the foundation has that new 12,500 square foot of office space. They'll have plenty of room to tell those 210 students, "Sorry, no cash for your education. But we'll still be receiving our full salaries". Those salaries for the foundation employees, by the way, exceed $80,000.00 for some positions. Not bad for managing money given to them by Lily Foundation. I feel sorry for the students who were promised scholarships through ISU Foundation only to have the rug jerked out from under them.. so the foundation can save a little cash for one year. Their endowment has annual contributions as well as maintaining investment strategies To cut off 30% of the scholarships may seem an 'honorable' gesture to save the endowment. But when one looks beneath the surface of this issued statement, one has to wonder where all the money is really going. The foundation met and exceeded its own self-imposed goal of $85 MILLION DOLLARS in 2012. Where did that cash go? Why can some of it not be utilized to meet scholarships already awarded? Those monies allegedly created 250 new scholarships - so where is it?? http://www.indstate.edu/news/news.php?newsid=2996

"I" was the person, the driver on the scene, who called WTHI's newsroom initially about this accident. Traffic was never completely shut down, with one lane remaining open in both directions. A tractor trailer belonging to Celadon out of Indianapolis was jack knifed on the right shoulder of westbound I-70 with what appeared to be a car that had been struck in the rear having spun out in the median near the eastbound lanes. That car had also been traveling westbound. As for complete details and who was at fault for the accident, I do not know. Nor did I witness the initial accident. At the time the interstate was slushy with slick spots on the bridges. This accident occurred immediately west of the bridge that crosses US 231 at exit 41 (the Cloverdaie / Greencastle exit ). Having entered the interstate at US 41, I can attest there had been zero Indiana State highway trucks on the interstate from there to exit 41. No plowing of snow with any pre-treatment of the road surface having been washed off by this morning's rain. There had been drivers traveling way too fast for conditions while at the same time there were drivers traveling much too slow for conditions as well. Both types of drivers cause accidents. SantaOwen is right - people need to slow down in this kind of weather but if you're going to travel well under the posted minimum speed of the interstate, you need to warn others you are doing so by using your emergency flashers.
