The can't fire her for the disease, but pretty sure they can fire her for being drunk on the job--I can't think of a single job where they WOULDN'T fire you for being drunk at work.

GazetteOnline.com : 'Talk about angels': No one hurt when crane falls at Cedar Rapids courthouse construction site

The ground was unstable? Maybe 31 feet of river water undercut the riverbank 2 years ago and caused the ground to shift...the site was picked before the flood, right? Has a study been done since then? And this site is how close to the river?

There is no doubt that gambling is a money maker. People will play the lottery, or go to casinos, in good economic times, and bad. The question is: how do you keep the money in the state?

GazetteOnline.com : Enforcing the code, but not tracking violations

Never pull a permit. The first time we pulled a permit to fix up our newly-purchased Time Check house 10 years ago, they immediately hit us with 17 code violations. We knew the house needed work, that's why we bought it. We didn't expect the city to hammer us--and continue to do so--for our entire 10-year stay in Time Check. Never again.

KCRG : City Officials Undecided on How to Spend Local Option Sales Tax | KCRG-TV9 News, Sports, and Weather

Here is what the money is supposed to be used for, straight off the sample ballot: 10 % for Property Tax Relief; and 90% for the acquisition and rehabilitation of flood damaged housing caused by the flooding of 2008, and matching funds for federal flood dollars to assist with flood recovery or flood protection. So, let's get started with the acquisitions of the properties that they know they're going to buy, like the ones in the greenway. You have $8 million. Start writing checks. You don't need to decide now what you're going to do with ALL the money--you don't even have it yet. It's like trying to decide what you're going to do with the money when you win the Powerball.

GazetteOnline.com : Press problems led to Wednesday Gazette delivery delays

People are always quick to blame the carrier--as a former carrier, I can tell you that carriers, by & large, arrive at the Distribution Center at about the same time every day. Unfortunately, the papers do not. It's a long process to get the papers in the hands of the carriers, and things do not always go smoothly. My favorite was the time that the Gazette truck backed up to the loading dock & the driver opened the door--to an empty truck. (Either they didn't tell him which truck, or he didn't ask.) Anyway, it's always something.

KCRG : Linn County Supervisors Discuss Giving Flood Victims Tax Break | KCRG-TV9 Cedar Rapids, Iowa | Local

The difference between the flood and a fire is that houses that burn down are normally rebuilt. The city will not allow me to rebuild my house because it's in the greenway. I haven't lived there since 6/11/08, and never will again.
