I grew up in the South and although we didn't have a maid to help us or raise me, I knew a lot of people who did. I'm part of a facebook group that has a very long thread about the "maid" that raised them. The reason the movie doesn't explain how these white children grew up to be racist is they didn't. They might have been brought up as Class-ists but not racists. Most of those children fought for civil rights and are offended every time they are called racists.
