That's very wise and thoughtful on her behalf. Having a special day is an important self esteem booster that no child should be without. Even if it's just singing Happy Birthday in the classroom. My family was always generous (I'm Jewish anyway) but it's not the same. I had my first birthday party last year after all the Christmas festivities were over. I guess it was worth the wait.

I'm really sorry. I got fired last spring. I'm not a kid any more and it's gotten pretty scary at times. I don't think my prospects of ever getting another job look good. I stayed away from here for quite a while because I was just too depressed. Ironically my former employer had a generous retirement plan and that has given me a little in the bank. But it won't last long. I know this sounds crazy but I didn't realize I was getting older. It kind of sneaked up on me.

Twelve is a little early but otherwise I had a great time in middle school. And the whole term "low rent." I'm paying about 1/2 the market value on a two bedroom house. The term is supposed to be an insult but it reads more like "kiss my ass."
