I was able to get it to do both Wifi and USB Tether without a problem, but there are some serious problems: a.) The Cricket network is very shitty (at least in Salem, Oregon) and will basically disconnect you for using X amount of bandwidth in Y time. I committed to not doing downloading of any kind and just regular browsing on a PC in some way would always force me to disconnect and reconnect my phone. My daily usage was rarely over 25 MB b.) Android has a problem that will have you constantly fixing your phone. If your savvy enough you can delete the file in /data/ and your phone will work again without flashing, but for most people they get their phone flashed and lose all their data. I'm not positive, but I think this "issue" only happens to customers that use tethering or unlocking. Both Google and carriers DO NOT CARE about the problem, and they only offer flashing as the "solution". c.) They use a very shitty DNS setup. I've been given wrong IPs on their network for domains compared to my Comcast or Verizon connections at home and work. (We know a certain IPs by heart)

I agree. Since writing this article I've had problems with AdSense and for the first time in 6 years I'm using other services besides Google ones, such as Yahoo! On the one hand I'm irritated and frustrated that the only reason I'm not using Google products I've became familiar with is because of a policy dispute, but on the other I'm enjoying checking out all the stuff I never looked (mostly from Yahoo) at because Google was keeping me happy.

Really frustrating that this worked when I posted this article, and now it doesn't work. I'm doing the tests in isolated Virtual Machines now because it appears the install and build scripts fail if they've been ran once already.

I think it could be done with a trust or karma system. At worst you could verify the build and remember the client is trusted. It's complex, but it should be looked into.
