I lot of survivors (and families of survivors) say that sort of thing. I think it's just a way to cope.

Maybe it's just me, but I feel like this kind of statement is pretty offensive to the victims and those who survived tragedies like this one. It almost sounds like you're blaming people for not being armed.

I was just about to post that link! It has a lot of useful information, even for extreme arachnophobes like me.

(P.S. I laughed out loud at your zombie imagery.)

My comment may sound sarcastic at first (it's not meant to be), but this incident could really hurt the credibility of future acid attack victims. This story is unfortunate on several levels.

Maybe the writer deemed the "80 percent chance" explanation as too long and confusing for readers. heh. Besides, technically this news story doesn't need to give you much more factual data to back up their statements. The writer used credible sources, and that's pretty much good enough. An AP article isn't the same as a peer-reviewed article in a scientific journal. But I agree; it would be nice to know where that percentage came from.

Well, I knew what a demographic was, but I'm trying to figure out the problem with posting an international story like this one. It seems like KOMO's news stories are not just locally-based, particularly since they use AP feeds on the site. Even before they had a website, the KOMO anchors would touch on international events in broadcasts. Is their larger scope the problem, then? And if KOMO isn't meeting their goals--and you don't know that they aren't--why do you care so much? I don't really understand why you have a problem with this AP story being posted. Like I said, I don't think the story was highlighted. People had the option of looking at the Guilty Pleasures / Entertainment section off to the side.

And seriously, what's the problem with not reading something you're not interested in? Was that comment offensive to you?

I don't think I was being snotty, but I'm sorry if it seemed that way. I don't see what's snotty about discussing the facts and pointing out that you have the option to read a story.

What is the demographic? Are you talking about KOMO's demographic? How do you know what their demographic is? CNN is also reporting this story; is that not a news source for the majority? What is "the majority," anyway? Isn't it kind of a fluid definition sometimes?

Besides, I don't think the story was highlighted in a front-page sort of way; it's only on the margin in the Entertainment section. Just because you haven't heard of someone doesn't mean that every single person who visits this website would be equally uninterested in the story.

I also don't understand why it's "incredible" to say you don't have to read something that doesn't interest you. Please explain. I'm genuinely curious--not trying to be snotty.

KOMO isn't reporting it; the story is from the Associated Press, which is where pretty much every non-local story comes from on this website. It's very easy to check the byline to see where the story is from. Maybe you should take your complaint to the AP. Or, as bcpolar said, don't read it. I'm sure you don't read every single news story in the world on a daily basis.

As a sidenote, Alexander McQueen has been a trending topic on Twitter for people in the Seattle area all day, so I'm sure "a SIGNIFICANT MAJORITY" are familiar with him.

Well, the part about how Plan B works was specifically taken from this website, although the same description is available all over the place:

But yeah, definitely feel free to quote common sense and easily-researched facts. I wish more people would do the same. :)

Plan B is emergency contraception. It isn't an abortion. How 'bout a refresher course in human anatomy. Plan B works in several ways: by delaying or inhibiting release of an egg (ovulation), or preventing the egg and the sperm from meeting (fertilization), or keeping a fertilized egg from attaching to the uterine wall (implantation).

It will not affect a fertilized egg already attached to the uterus; it will not affect an existing pregnancy. It is NOT a form of abortion; it won't even work if you're already pregnant.

Or, what hamixie and mhungry said.
