Kevin Restivo's Tech Blog : Research In Motion’s purchase of Viigo: Striking a deeper app development chord

Great question - it's probably a point I should've raised in the post. Let me put it to you this way: I very much doubt Research In Motion will have its Viigo team support Windows Mobile over the long term.

Isn\\\'t Straight Talk a Tracfone brand? You associate it with Verizon. http://www.straighttalk.com/Howitworks

Glad you think so. If I lived in the U.S., I\\\'d give it due consideration. The fixed cost is very attractive indeed. I doubt the Tracfone network is much better than say Verizon\\\'s but it\\\'s good to hear the offering is to your liking.

That\\\'s a good one. To be honest, I\\\'m not familiar with the offering but it\\\'d be great to give it a try at some point if and when it\\\'s ever imported to Canada.

Great additions Peter. Google Voice is by far the most practical offering of the lot that we currently can't officially access. I should blog about that topic in future.

Kevin Restivo's Tech Blog : Palm Pre Promotion In Canada - Q4 Release Date?

That is a great question. Bell has said very little to date about the Palm Pre; the company has said nothing as far as I can tell about plans that may or may not be associated with the Pre when it's released. However, Rogers has recently tightened up its hardware upgrade plan so that buyers of subsidized smartphones MAY NOT buy another subsidized smartphone from the provider for 24 months from the time of purchase. Previously, buyers of Rogers subsidized smartphones could upgrade plan after 12 months.

No problem. I don't know if the video will have 'legs' as you say but I thought it was a relatively fun and innocuous way to plug a product that may be tougher to sell in this gloomy economic environment.

Thanks Jona. I agree Android will have a significant impact on the market. Here's a question for you: Why would a consumer choose an Android-powered device over say the iPhone or the BlackBerry now? Just a thought. Sign up for my Google Friend Connect on this blog if you don't mind please. Thanks!

Kevin Restivo's Tech Blog : Smartphone wave to wash over North America this year

Thanks for the kind words and for joining my Google Friend Connect. Let me be clear: the absolute last resort for the carriers in Canada or the United States is to pull the price lever. Don't count on it despite increased competition and a nasty recession. Carriers would prefer to package creatively as opposed to cut prices. Keep on reading.

Hey Kevin, Good points. Data pricing is still very much an inhibitor to smartphone adoption in Canada. However, prices have dropped significantly over the past 18 months. Expect the carriers to relent somewhat on prices in future as competition intensifies and more importantly data subscriber growth slows over time. The carriers, however, will become more creative when packaging services too. BTW, follow me on Google Friend Connect (please)! (The Other) Kevin

Kevin Restivo's Tech Blog : The End of Free? Let The Painful Transition Begin

Hi Mike, Thanks for the comment. Good points. I think the answer is all the above. In other words, there is no one answer to newspaper or for that matter mainstream media's problems. However, I do think there's inherent value in the work done by newspapers. I'm not as down on news media - there is a role to be played and people still do value news. However, news organizations insisted on sticking with what has been the tried and true approach to news gathering and delivery despite continued declines. Also, there's still a fair bit of straight up news reporting though I agree there is a lot of commentary, which to my mind isn't a bad thing. People will buy publications but media has to first recognize and stop the downward cycle they're in before if the collective fortunes of the industry are to improve.
