World In Conversation : Would you hire illegal immigrants over legal residents for less pay?- 119 Blog

Part 3: Even our on TA told his story about his family had to run across the boarder in the middle of the night. His father was a legal citizen of American, but he risked his life to get his whole family to America. His father worked long work weeks to bring his family to America for a better life. So to answer the question, “would I hire illegal immigrants over legal resident for less pay?” it would depend on the situation. If these illegal immigrants do not have the experience to do anything but yard work then I would let them do my yard work. If they are willing, I will pay them. I would pay them just as much as a legal resident and I bet they would do just as good a job, if not better. They are hard working people and far from lazy. If they are illegal then they do not have any other choice then to work under the table. There also comes that legal battle with harboring a illegal immigrant, but you can’t help but to help someone out who needs it.

Part 2: It seems like a vicious sad circle. They are human beings who want to take care of their family and only give their family the best. They see America as a land of opportunity. After all, don’t we advertise America as being a place of freedom and possibilities? Going back to the ranting man on YouTube, I can believe some of the comments that people posted calling Mexicans scum and trash. Like Sam mentioned they are some of the hardest working people. He gave the example of the women who sold pears in California, but couldn’t get them out to the stores in enough time because the Mexicans were not allowed to cross the boarder to help and not one unemployed American wanted to do that dirty work. I don’t think many Americans would set aside their pride to do the dirty work Mexicans do just to earn dollars a day for their families. art 2:

Part 1: After watching the YouTube video of the “ranting” man, I started thinking about if American’s really are negatively affected by illegal immigrants. Do immigrants even have rights? The only time I hear about illegal immigrants is when they are working for Americans for very little pay. I think the whole situation is very touchy and complicated and that is obviously why no one has been able to take control of it. From my knowledge, border patrol is very costly, but we can not cut it completely because there needs to be some form of structure. We can not just let all of these people in especially with all the drug trafficking that has been occurring. I feel like we could be spending the money for border patrol on more productive things for American citizens, like the education system and health care. Last year in my Cas 100 class I did a project on illegal immigration and I learned about the process for applying for U.S. citizenship. It is definitely not an easy application, and the process is tedious.

World In Conversation : What are your thoughts on everything we saw and heard in lecture about Native Americans?- 119 Blog

Part 3: . Every time the topic of discrimination comes up, whether or not with black and white, Irish and English, Native Americans or who ever, I always say the Europeans screwed it up! I had an African American Studies class last year and the same thing happened. Europeans entered the lands, trying to force their lifestyle on those so called “dumb” natives and ended up causing mass exodus. But, anyway back to the Native Americans, I was sitting there wishing I could just help them! They get so neglected not just financially, but even in the media. I couldn’t believe that a British television station was covering this story and not our people in our own country.

Part 2: This teenagers and kids don’t have any food or clean water let alone the help to get over the loss of a mother or father. I was heart broken when I saw that family pushing their car with a television set in the back seat to a pawn shop just so they could afford something to eat. Even the poorest of poor in North Philadelphia seem more comfortable then these Native American families on this reservation. I remember reading an article in “Shadowing Boxing with Race” for our first exam about a Native American woman who was expressing her hatred for the white race as a child. I will never forget when she said “I have seen more deaths as a child than anyone will see in their life time”. I could not imagine the horrors she has seen to make her hate another race so much. I also am confused with the fact that the Native American’s were the first people in America, so why are they getting picked on, no not even picked on but killed for the way they look and act.

Part 1: The videos about Native Americans provided at the end of class showed the true hardships of this culture that never dawned on me before. Of course in grade school, when learning about the first people of the land we heard about the pilgrims and the Indians. We also heard about the Native Americans and the cowboys. All these stories are just explaining American History and giving insight into the white mans world. After history class not much is mentioned about the Native Americans. Today’s lecture was the first time I actually heard about the tragedies that had been occurring on Native American reservations. I had no clue that Native American teenagers are among the highest to commit suicide and that the mortality rate for women is only 50 years old and men is a mere 48! This is such a devastating statistic. I could not imagine as a Native American teenage loosing my mother and father at such a young age. These means I would have lost my mother 7 years ago and honestly without my mother I feel as if I would contemplate committing suicide too.

Part 3: My boyfriend had an interest in the Marines, but he wasn’t allowed to register because of his tattoos. We are constantly watching shows and documentaries about the war and the awful living conditions the soldiers have to bear. We recently watched a documentary titled “Battle of Marjah” which portrayed the steps the marines took to gain control of the land. I really do not like blood and gore, but you become attached to these soldiers and find compassion in each of them. I then learned that Marjah citizens who signed up to be soldiers are thrown in with the American soldiers and used as bait. It is really sad to see the American soldiers screaming at them and calling them names like “dumb” and “stupid”. When the Marines are cursing and being crude you can’t help but laugh because you can relate on some level, but then I kept thinking “how could you be so shallow”. We entered THEIR land with obvious cultural and language barriers and we are calling the people who are trying to help us dumb? I just couldn’t understand how you can treat someone with some much disrespect.

Part 2: There are two sides, the good (America) and the bad (the Taliban) but what about the people stuck in between? Sam raised the point that as Americans we think of all Middle Eastern people and Muslims as a potential threat, and those same Middle Eastern people and Muslims look at us Americans as killers of innocent people. Sam also shared a quote at the end of class; I can not remember the quote word for word, but it pretty much said that it is easy to denounce our enemy, but not take a walk in their shoes and see from their perspective. I never fully understood why we were at war with Iraq. What happened on September 11th can never be made up for; we can not just go in their and kill their people to make things better. It was been 10 years that our soldiers have been over there not only loosing their lives but taken the lives of other, innocent others.

Part 1: In today’s class we watched a lot of videos, almost all containing hatred towards the Muslims and Middle Eastern people. Two videos had the biggest impact on me, both of which containing the same subject. I was appalled at the video in which the American soldiers were punishing the Iraqi people for “stealing” wood by running over their car with the army tank. The second video showed American soldiers pushing a civilian’s truck off the road with their Humvee because he was driving too slowly. As Americans we see this current war in Iraq glorified. We always hear and see people supporting our troops with yellow ribbons around their trees and magnets on their cars. Of course we should respect the men and women who risk their lives everyday to keep us safe and try to being some piece to the Middle East, but we never think about the “other” people involved in this war.

World In Conversation : What was more enlightening, the information on your own sex or the opposite sex and why?- 119 Blog

Part 3: Many guys in high school used to call me the queen of “blue balls”. I was always the good girl; I didn’t mind making out but I did not feel comfortable moving beyond that. Even in college, the make out session would get hot and heavy and hands would start wondering and I would always stop and say “I’m not doing anything, so stop now before you get yourself all worked up”. I definitely was not well liked for that, but it wasn’t like he was putting any work in on me; he just wanted to get himself taken care of. As of today, I do have a boyfriend of over a year, we do have sex and we also run into problems of his “needy penis”. I have no problem pleasuring him, but I feel like sometimes he just thinks with his penis. He gets that image in his mind that gets him going and it’s all him from then on. For women, four play is definitely necessary.

Part 2: I also really liked how Sam touched on the whole sexual assault and “no means no” topic. Every year so many incidents involving a girl who was put into a sexual situation that she did not feel comfortable with occur. Either the girl does know how to properly say no, or she feels threatened. I never realized that is definitely comes down to the guy being ready to go and the girl not feeling totally comfortable to go any further. Most girls have an emotional attachment to the act of sex, but it seems like guys just want to get the pleasure. I feel like when guys get “all heated up” as Sam put it, and do not receive sexual pleasure they may turn angry and force it upon girls. Girls on the other hand can just walk away without that feeling, which I cannot really describe because I am not a guy. But, from what I have heard it is not a good feeling what so ever. “Blue balls” is the proper term.

Part 1: Going into the lecture on the “Needy Penis”, I did not expect to find out so much information that I did not know. I was curious to learn about the male perspective, but found myself learning a lot about my own gender. I am not sex expert, but I think it is quite obvious that a male is able to “heat” up a lot faster than a women. Women have a lot more needs then a man, and not the kind of needy used to describe the penis. I really liked how Laura and Sam explained that the penis is primarily used for one function, penetration. Women go through so much more than men do. Our bodies are so much more complex, so when we are not in the mood, it’s for so many other reasons than that. Laura made so many good points about a woman’s body and how much we go through and that sometimes our parts are just stressed out and need the week off.

Part 3: My mom did not act any differently towards him because of his skin color nor did she judge me for hanging out with him. I feel like the women in my family are all more open minded and less judgmental, but for the men it is a different story. I definitely think my step-father would feel uncomfortable with me being in an interracial relationship. I don’t know if I would let this get in the way of me being happy if I really wanted to be in a relationship with someone of a different race. I know if I were in an interracial relationship, I would catch a lot of crap for it from my friends. Now a day it is not unusual to see interracial couples walking down the street, and I personally believe they make beautiful babies.

Part 2: I always viewed my mom as open-minded and accepting of whatever her children wanted to do or be in life. Throughout my whole life I have only had one friend of color and he was black. This is not because I am a shallow person, but just because of the neighborhood I grew up in. He was the only black kid in my grade school from first to eighth grade. I went to an all girl catholic high school that was about 97% white. I guess the girls who looked the same and came from the same backgrounds flocked together. Again this doesn’t mean that I was not accepting of new friends of different backgrounds. Anyway, I brought my one black friend Kyle home with a bunch of my friends in eighth grade.

Part 1: My friends and I always play this game “if you could date a black guy, who would it be?” I always say Pharrell, most of my friends say Usher, Jay-Z, and randomly Mos Def. I know my boyfriend always chooses Rihanna. I never thought the game was racist, but thinking about it now that word “could” really projects a greater meaning. It is as if we are not aloud to date a black person or a person of a different race other then white. I definitely see color but I am not repulsed by other people just because they are a different color. I personally have never been in a situation where a person of color asked me on a date and I felt so uncomfortable because of his skin color that I had to say no. I have been asked before if I would ever bring a black guy home to meet my family. I automatically wanted to say of course, but the more I thought about it the more I realized that not everyone is my family may feel completely comfortable with the situation.

Part 3: A black women from the stand by line came over and starting complaining that is wasn’t fair, and ended with that line “why because I’m black?” My friend was mortified. He had no intention of bringing race into the situation, but she figured if she made him feel uncomfortable she could get into the ride quicker. I also feel like white privilege works well with the police. I was watching a 60 minutes special about race and there were a group of white kids vandalizing a car and a group of black kids sleeping in a car in a suburban area. Who do you think the police got more calls about? The black kids noticeably sleeping in their car not harming anyone. Its as if just because we are white we are automatically assumed to be innocent or not intentionally causing harm.

Part 2: Personnel are waiting around to help customers out; I was clearly not next in line, a black woman was waiting for help, but the employee insisted on helping me next. My assumption was that she was assuming I would buy more than the women in front of me. On the flip side of this I feel like people of color, or to my experience black people use the race card for personal gain. In some sense it may not be black privilege because black people are obviously feeling inferior so they feel like they need to pull out the race card. I constantly hear those famous four words “why because I’m black?” I worked in Disney World two years ago; it was an internship for school. I worked in the Magic Kingdom and experienced tons and tons of different races and cultures, and people from all walks of life. My friend was working at the front of line for Space Mountain letting people in with fast passes when his friends came up without them, so he wrote them one and let them in.

Part 1: I think that there is white privilege as well as black privilege, but in two completely different senses. As a white person I definitely notice the meaning of white privilege and have experienced it myself and as a bystander. White privilege to me means using your superior qualities to earn and achieve a goal. You yourself may not even be the one expressing white privilege but the person you are interacting with may be using it towards you. For example, you, a white person and a person of color may be applying for the same job and the employer, a white person chooses you over to person of color because you may seem to be superior because of the color of your skin. Another example may be you and your family, and a family of color at a restaurant may be treated differently because of your race. To recollect some personal experiences: I have recently encountered this in a store at the mall.

The only situation I can see where people can seem discriminatory towards Muslims is in the airport because of the horrible events of 9/11. I have to admit if I were on a plane full of Muslims I would feel a bit uneasy. I also feel that being at Penn State we do not experience a lot of racists actions because we are all educated and open minded.

Part 2: I will walk on the other side of the street if a group of black people are walking in my direction. I know girls who have been jumped before just because they were walking by themselves. I also mentioned before that 8 police officers have been shot and killed over the past 3 years by black people. This has caused huge tensions between the whites and blacks in my community. Black people also have a reputation of ruining our neighborhoods. Everyone is moving away from where we grew up because more and more black people are moving in. The house where my dad grew up is completely destroyed and it kills my grandmother to drive by and see that. I do not agree with all of this reputations and stereotypes towards black people because it is not just black people, for example we saw that video about Tammy who didn’t keep her home clean. Philadelphians are racists towards black people because black people settle in intercity neighborhoods where white “hicks” settle in urban areas.
