Daily Camera.com: : CU-Boulder students raise concerns about proposed campus smoking ban - Boulder Daily Camera

You think we have the time or energy for that? Hell, I'd be elated if the majority of my undergraduate students were simply writing in complete sentences and not messing up fractions. The eco-liberal doctrine is something with which we brain-wash graduate students along with the Stockholm Syndrome that keeps the students from leaving the program for better paying and more sensible jobs.

Is there a way for the CO legislature to increase the funding going to CU but mandate that it only go to the football team?

You shouldn't worry so much: Nobody is serious about dissolving the football program. It's a vital component of the University's operation to extract donations from alums who seemingly have forgotten that CU Boulder is anything other than a life-support system for a minor league football team. I personally hope that the Buffs win national titles regularly so that you guys will send in hundreds of millions of dollars of donations every year that they can use to lower tuition rates and otherwise improve their educational capacity.

CU-Boulder's budget is 1.14 billion dollars a year. The total revenue from football and related operations comprises about 0.5% of that budget. Even more there are substantial costs in terms of salary, infrastructure and maintenance associated with this relatively paltry sum. The real value of the football program is getting alums to donate cash to the University directly. There are far more alums living in CA than in all of the Big 12 territory put together and so we've reached out to the CA television market to hopefully reach into the pockets of alumni living there.

Solving quadratic equations is part of the 8th grade math curriculum in Colorado.
I agree. It's time that CU finally spins off its education and research missions into a separate private entity to avoid polluting it's core mission of providing collegiate athletic entertainment.

If the state bothered funding CU at more than 4% of operating costs then likely the university wouldn't have to be begging for change like this. Arizona provides close to 3 times the state funding per student that we do. Arizona.

CU receives next to nothing from the state (4%) and it's tuition is largely set by elected regents. No wonder it's been reduced to begging and trying to gouge students with fees. Even AZ (a tight-fisted conservative state hit much harder by the 2007 recession than CO) funds it's universities to the tune of 2.5-3 times more funds per student. This is pathetic, CO should either fund CU properly or convert it to a private university.

Kind of sad how the AP only reports on the performance of the QBs and completely ignores everything else on the field. While this game was marked by excellent QB play on both sides the difference was made by turn overs and our inability to stop the run.

I think it's time the CU went private. The legislature is more concerned with using the university to score political points than offering any meaningful funding (around 4% now). Also, if guns are so great at preventing violence then the state legislature should welcome them into capitol. Anyone interested in putting together that ballot initiative?

Sorry, meant millions typed billions. This is what happens when I post late at night. I agree that oil production is only a piece of the puzzle, albeit an important one and one that will not be solved by expecting that small increases in US oil production will significantly affect the global price of oil (as the original poster was).

Yep, millions of barrels of oil. This is what happens when I post late at night. I stand by my main point - that the US produces such a small fraction of the global oil supply that even large changes in the US production make small changes in the global price.

When you're looking at graphs of the time history of the price of a good remember to make sure it's normalized for inflation. In terms of 2009 dollars oil hasn't spiked above $100 a barrel since the 1860s and the price of oil has fallen sharply since 2008 from $98 to less than $70 (likely owing to the global economic slowdown).

Daily Camera.com: : Longmont anti-fracking rally draws about 100 - Boulder Daily Camera

The world produces 70 billion barrels of oil per day. The USA produces 5 billion of those barrels. According to the most wildly optimistic estimates fracking would add another 2 billion to US production. Assuming a quoted elasticity of demand of -0.5 then the change in price should be roughly the change in quantity divided by the elasticity (here 0.02/0.5 = 0.04) or a 4% decrease in gas prices if we frack for all we're worth (that's a fourteen cent difference in the cost of a $3.50 gallon of gas). To put these numbers in perspective: If gas is $3.50/gallon and you drive 15K miles a year... In a full size SUV (avg 13 mpg) you'll spend $4038 on gas (no fracking) or $3877 (fracker's dream), saving $161. In a mid-size sedan (avg 21 mpg) you'll spend $2500 on gas (no fracking) or $2400 (fracker's dream), saving $100. In a Prius (avg 50 mpg) you'll spend $1050 on gas (no fracking) or $1008 (fracker's dream), saving $42. So when all is said and done even substantial changes to US oil production produce insignificant savings to the consumer relative to simply operating a more fuel efficient vehicle.

A campus wide email was sent out yesterday morning from the office of the university president reiterating that we are not to participate in any political activity during working hours and that we'd have to take personal leave (and make it that we are not acting as part of the university) if we did want to attend a political function.

Why are guns suddenly legal on University campus but still illegal in the Colorado Chamber of Representatives? I'm sure our brave legislators would be glad to have armed hero citizens in their midst ready to strike down potential gunmen in a proud celebration of our 2nd Amendment rights.
Daily Camera.com: : Falcons beat mistake-prone Broncos - Boulder Daily Camera

Last night I was mainly impressed by the Falcons throwing a lot of defensive stunts at the Broncos - showing a disorganized blitz and dropping into tight pass coverage. It threw the Broncos for a loop for the first half. After the break they came back running more option plays with Manning making adjustments at the line. The other big story was the officials and the Broncos using both challenges early on.
