The whole thing is farcical really. The trouble is that just from a perspective of pure human psychology, hardly anyone is going to dare to admit that they are wrong or have been duped - especially people who've built their career around their beliefs. Shouting "flat-earthers" at people with an opposing view is just the natural point you end up at when that happens. It took geologists decades to admit that the theory of tectonics was right. Why? Because they'd all pinned so much of their personal credibility on the theories that preceded it.
