The nation is better off frankly. Breitbart used John Stuart Miill's famous truth that 'while not all conservatives are stupid most stupid people are conservative' as a guide to corral the support the less intelligent and less educated (as most of his fan's postings here prove). Like a majority of his mouth-breathing chickenhawk followers, Breitbart mouthed patriotism and hawkish positions while being too cowardly to serve in the military. He crowed about making himself a success while not mentioning his rich mommy and daddy's role. A hypocrite of the highest caliber his death makes this country a cleaner and more decent place overnight. Americans and real patriots with an IQ over room temperature say good riddance!

Mental-midgets like Schermerhorn on one end and whack-jobs like Sugarbear67 who think Obama is a socialist-Muslim on the other. Bookends of idiocy.

ralphiesmom: "It was covered up by the U.S. Government..." Sure fruitcake, up your meds. There was an independent investigation by the Clark Clifford, a Naval Board of Inquiry, a JCS investigation, a Senate investigation and a House investigation. The press and other media covered the issue for months on end. Nice cover-up.

'Schermerhorn'? He was arrested along with a Dr 'Diest'. Nice Aryan names. The genetic seeds don't land far from the Jew-hating Nazi tree. Heinrich Himmler would be proud of them.

Antiwar.com Original Articles : Gian Gentile: Exposing Counterfeit COIN

You're right, I used his whole quote; really I should have left out the last line or amended it slightly. Vlahos is giving this bankrupt doctrine credence and that in itself is dangerous. It's also very cynical to use it as a ploy to support the position of pulling troops out. If you choose to ignore all the reports of the success of not kicking down doors and shooting up civilian cars in favor of adopting a less aggressive, reach out to communities, and hold out an olive branch to your enemies approach then certainly I won't convince you. In a less sarcastic sense that you meant, yes I am an 'expert'; Part of my training was in effectiveness of what you might call the 'hearts and minds' doctrine.

I'll make it easy for you Matt and spell it out. 1. From my own observations in country before and after, the historical data on successful COIN (Gentile is wrong here), most expert opinion and the overwhelming amount of evidence, Vlahos is simply dead wrong about the kinder, gentler Hearts and Minds strategy not being viable. 2. By trotting out Gentile's critique of COIN and his 'blast the hell out of them' approach as the only real alternative (and so let's leave) she gives credence to a dangerous and lethal point of view that deserves none. I'll use hand puppets and crayons next time if you like. ;-)

I have to admit they have a point. Ms Quote from Ricks blog: "So let's get this straight: Antiwar.com promotes Gian Gentile, who argues that we should conduct COIN in the form of 19th-century British punitive raids, as the Army's shining light. Ergo, Antiwar.com is in favor of more Predator drone strikes and "direct action" counterterrorism?" Spot on and shame on you Vlahos.

Since you're a novice at this it's understandable you don't frame COIN in the correct fashion and seem to give Gentile far more credit than, I think, he deserves. I've done three tours in Iraq, the latest during the 'Surge' strategy. LTC Gentile has done one and done it before the COIN strategy was put into place. The idea of many of the components of the Surge weren't drawn up by the Bush administration or a right-wing think-tank. We were talking about similar tactics in late 2003, it took several years until it bubbled up from those that served there into being studied, refined and implemented. The difference between the aggressive, piece-meal approach prior to Petreaus vs his implementation of the Surge is dramatic and for the better. Did you actually READ the new COIN manual? It isn't a 'heroic narrative' of any sort it's a philosophical and practical guide for conducting COIN. Gentile's comments about the use of history are ironic. The COIN strategy was derived not from the Bush administration or some right-wing think-tank but from Petreaus and Marine Gen Mattis' study of past counter-insurgencies; successful and unsuccessful. Gentile also misrepresents the Surge/COIN. Its function is not the change Iraq at the barrel of a gun but--and Petreaus and Odierno have stated this often--to give the country some stability back (the stability we took away by invading). It's succeeded to a point--not perfectly--but better than what it replaced. Gen Odierno and his staff in Baghdad added much practical application to the COIN manual and Petreaus' strategy. Odierno is'nt part of Bush's administration or a right-wing think-tank. He and his staff's additions to the Surge strategy were born of hard gained experience in Iraq. One would think you'd know or mention these things if you were going to write a critical article about the Surge. In the end you've missed an underlying truth here; The Surge/COIN ops with it's emphasis on 'hearts and minds' plus boot on the ground was a repudiation of the Cheney/Rumsfeld/Franks strategy of going in with fewer resources than Gen Shinseki advised, going for 'shock and awe' and--among other things--that lack of resources contributed heavily to the growth of the insurgency.
