I'M sorry I missed this comment for so long!!!

Something I guess is good about #EmmaRiceGate is how it's pulling out into the open the conflict between the Globe as a museum of "traditional practice" (literally whatever that means), and the Globe as a theatrical space which does new and exciting things, which may not always work. I'm not convinced ruffs and tights in the generic sense are ever necessary in a played-straight production of Shakespeare tbh - unlike (I think) shared lighting, a repertory company, and other parts of "original practice", I don't think vaguely Ye Olde costuming can contribute meaningfully to the way we understand the play, UNLESS it's being intentionally playful with the idea of "original practice", but there's only so many times you can do that before it gets obviously meta and boring.

I wonder if it's to do with comedies being "buoyant! glitzy! fun!" and tragedies often being "STRIPPED-DOWN AND VISCERAL", and the relative costume budget implications. As you know I am always extremely up for Histories Concepts. <3

Aaaaaaaaaah that is very kind!! (even when I don't respond to comments for like A WEEK!) I do hugely miss the kind of community that linked-up blogging sites had - of course it was partially because fewer people were around, but it felt more relaxed and friendly somehow. I'm very glad you're still around! :D

You're right - what I really meant was that I couldn't stay up for the late-night sessions any more (when I was at university we could be playing until 2 or 3am two weeknights a week - it's less easy to spring back from that now that I have an office job!). But that's more about work timing than age - a lot of people playing in the late sessions are massively experienced and had much more endurance than the young people.

And best of luck with the fiddle - it's a hugely rewarding instrument. :)

I went to Lille station for the first time in October, it was lovely! I wanted to spend more time in the city.

Yes! And it's such a great station, too. :)

Yes, I remember doing the passport faff on the fast France-Italy train that goes through Switzerland. I was also impressed with the Paris-Venice sleeper checking them while you're asleep, although it does involve giving up your passport overnight which is a bit stressy.

Thank you! I hope it will be interesting (or if it isn't, that will be a pretty good bellwether for the book!)
