the kent ridge common : Examination fever on Campus

am not too sure why you are pushing so hard for Kelvin's articles to be published here. He can definitely publish his articles on his blog and we're in no way stopping you from visiting his blog. My take on it is that if it's available and accessible on another blog on the internet, there're no reasons why we should replicate his articles for the sake of it on the publication. Magazines have editorial discretion about the nature of articles they wish to publish, and an exercise of it does not mean that they do not respect free speech. If the Economist magazine doesn't publish an article you have written on say, Sesame Street, does it necessarily mean that they don't respect free speech? Not quite. I'd like to keep the discussion pertinent to the article and this would be the last time I would be commenting here on this issue. Cheers! Lester

Hey everyone, Wow thanks for the comments. It's really good to get feedback from all of you. Raven, I'm sorry if you have inferred from my earlier reply it is of my opinion that Kelvin's articles are tabloid-ish in nature. Of course this is not the case! Far from it. On the contrary, I have always had a high opinion of his articles that have been always pushing the boundaries and are often well-researched, even if there are some that I disagree with. He has put in a lot of effort for the publication and I cannot thank him enough for that. Yes it is definitely my fault that I haven't been 'on top of things' to as to speak. There are many reasons why our writers are not contributing but I am not at liberty to discuss them here. But I am sure that I have never put any 'pressure' on Kelvin to write just because our other writers aren't writing. We are doing this on a purely voluntary basis and our writers are free to come and go as they like.

Hi Guest!

Thanks for being respectful on this. We are not in the business of wanting to attract the most readers. If we ever wanted to do this, we might have as well started a gossip tabloid or blog. We are doing this because we like what we're doing. And we're just going to let this source of inspiration be the starting point of whatever that we are write.

Kelvin is a good writer and we wish him all the best. But KRC is not a one man show. If it is, then something has to be done about it. And this something is being done right now. Even if it means letting go of our best writer and letting the frequency of our articles suffer in the short-run. But I sincerely believe that this is the way to go, and this is the best for us in the long term. There has to be a transitionary process. A process of renewal thatI believe will see a more capable team of people take the publication to greater heights. One individual cannot make or break a team.

Thanks for being concerned about this, but I believe that readership is not an exclusive thing. KRC readers can definitely read Kelvin's blog, and avid fans of Kelvin can also be reading KRC at the same time. We could just be offering different things to the readers.

Thanks for your comments once again!

Lester

the kent ridge common : Ris Low - who are we hating?

The link that you have given to accuse me of plagiarism (http://www.temasekreview.com/2009/10/10/the-saga-... was published on the *10th of October 2009*. Having written the entirety of this article on the 9th of October and receiving first comments on my article at 6am on 10th of October 2009, there is no way that my article could have plagiarised from something that was published a day later. This complete article on Ris was in fact first published on the 9th of October, but then I retracted it and put it for publishing on the 11th of October because it clashed with another article published at the same time and we were trying to even out the average number of article published to one a day. I do not know what ends you're trying to pursue with your means but I hope that this effectively settles the debate. Cheers, Lester

Hi Lin, Usually I'd find it meaningless to get on the defensive on something like that. But since you have spamming this discussion board with your accusations of plagiarism, let me offer you conclusive proof that I did not. I have taken the trouble to generate snapshots of when the first comment on this article was posted. It was, in fact, posted at 6:55am on 10th October 2009 by Ruby. Take a look at the following screenshot: (<a href="http://kentridgecommon.com/wp-content/themes/them..." target="_blank"><a href="http://kentridgecommon.com/wp-content/themes/them..." target="_blank"><a href="http://kentridgecommon.com/wp-content/themes/them..." target="_blank"><a href="http://kentridgecommon.com/wp-content/themes/them..." target="_blank">http://kentridgecommon.com/wp-content/themes/them... 2 2/tma/images/latest/comments.jpg) I originally wrote this on the 9th of October and published a link to this story on my facebook account in which some of my friends have posted their comments.
Hi Defennder, Thanks for your input and the links once again! I agree with you that all things considered, she doesn't yet have enough grace and tact to represent Singapore on the international stage. I think all these boils down to her youth and lack of experience being in the limelight/interacting with the media. But far from believing that she rightfully should represent Singapore after all that has happened, I think that's some silver lining in this entire episode as is the intent of my article. Perhaps she has forced us to take a better look at ourselves as a society on the whole. I've checked out your links with interest. Your input's been fantastic.
