I have been playing with these products as well. I like the speed of DISQUS, but I have to admit that some features of intensedebate appeal to me. I am switching back to DISQUS on my site for the speed reasons.

I agree with you on some parts. I also think you are missing the failures. Lets take a look. Do you remember Orkut? While I like the browser, I am not sure it is fully baked. No themes and plugin support. These are major issues.

They still have there text advertisement to the right. That is how they "make money". I believe for them it is more important to have a large user base right now. So that user base would be the reason they are doing it.
