Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Sex.

Sheet Music was recommended to us before we got married, and now we buy it for EVERYONE that gets married. We should have shares in that book. We even gave it to my parents (at their request), which is just weird, to think of them reading the same stuff on sex as we do!! Our favourite book ever!!

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : SCL on CNN.

Wow, just read a snippet of comments under the article and thought, 'Jon, you're a brave man'. Putting your stuff out there to the criticisms of the secular world, out of context of this site or of Christian culture...well, you're brave. Hope you didn't take a knocking and just let most of those comments slide.

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : I was "flat pissed."

congrats Jon. I'm sure this was what you wanted to achieve with your work- really touching someone's heart and encouraging them- but not just a regular reader!

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Why worry? (A giveaway.)

Wow. I didn't realise I was going to be judged for what I wrote when I answered Jon's question. And it hasn't been my experience that this is one of those kind of forums, thus the vulnerability in my response. True- you couldn't gauge it but I'm not sure it's your place to decide that. The truth is that I KNOW bad things happen, not just in a rational way, but in an experience way. The truth is that my "worries" are deep psychological anxieties that I'm receiving counseling for. And I'm not sure why I felt the need to justify my response. In my experience of regularly reading this site, SCL is a place where people pray for one another, show support and encouragement for one another, as well as offer humourous and insightful critiques of Christian culture. Or maybe there was some kind of humour implied in the question and I just missed the point.

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : A weird thing is happening.

"Spoon with the BIble"- LOL! I'm so glad you were able to use your book to tell your co-workers about Jesus and our very real struggle to consistently live like Him. I guess you really couldn't ask for much more than that- except perhaps to get number two on the all-time best sellers list (it just wouldn't be right to beat the Bible! Or is the Bible no longer #1? I've lost track). I'm excitedly waiting for my copy to arrive.

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Having Job Titles that No One Understands

I thought it was funny that the Anglican Church in Australia has plenty of "Spiritual Directors" and "Directors of Formation" with jobs specific to training up future priests (ie my hubby). We're so hip and with it- that's why the blokes still wear dresses right?

My little sister died suddenly 15 months ago now, aged 17. Life's been so hard since then. I'm getting help now for the depression and anxiety that followed the grief, but God still feels so far away. The doubts I'm experiencing now I haven't had since becoming a Christian over 10 years ago. I don't even know exactly what to pray for anymore, cos you can't turn back time.

I voted. I live in Australia and have no concept of East Nashville, but that's ok. I was walking home from my local library the other day admiring how clean, beautiful, and safe our country is to live in. Anything that helps someone else experience that pleasure.

The Mother's Day one is kinda like Valentine's Day- "oh, I didn't do anything because it's all commercial anyway". You can write a nice love letter without it being commercial! It's a cop out, I reckon.

How do you value it when it really is just all too hard? What do you do when you don't value it anymore? You do those extra things when you feel there is something there worth fighting for, and that's awesome prevention. I grew up Catholic and the commitment stuff was pretty drilled into me, and I also had awesome role models in my parents. I think the fact that divorce is not an option- that I am committed to this marriage no matter what- has got us through some pretty tough times- it's forced us to do 'whatever it takes'. the big C's- Choosing to Commit and Communicate- helps when you don't feel there's anything worth saving.

You made me laugh out loud twice in this post! I loved the "is this really happening, dad please clean up the mess" bit. Kids take us so literally hey, I've learned that sarcasm is absolutely lost on children! In the same way that subtlety is lost on husbands... We have many variations on #7- find out if your wife likes secrets before you organise big secret surprises... if your wife likes indoors, cosy, comfort and reading lots of books on holiday, taking her out bush (way out bush) for her honeymoon surprise destination is not a good idea.

My husband used to use the word penultimate all the time, until I looked it up one day and discovered it meant "second to last", not, "better than the best"! We laughed for a long time over that one. It sounds good though!
