Caracas Chronicles : Apples and Oranges: A Parable of Distorsiolandia

The issue is that we need apples to trade for tomatos and bananas, which are imported and can only be paid with apples, so apples become even more scarce. Furthermore, the problem becomes greater because the price of orange seeds is subsidised by the government for internal comsumption at less than the international price for the same commodity, which is the nations only source of additional apples and to top it of, the government has seized control of all orange seed production and the industry is in decline.

Caracas Chronicles : Of drunks, fights and empty bottles

Quico , I happen to agree with you 100%. Our oppo parties try very hard to alienate those who WOULD vote for them with all the BS that goes on, not even under closed doors. I guess that all that they agree upon is that they want Chavez out but mostly, I fear, to get their piece of the great Venezuelan arepa. I guess that all that we can do is to hold our noses at election time because most of them are not as bad as Chavez, but barely at that. However, I do applaud Leopoldo's idea of a new party, since I could not stomach his old one. He has a chance to bring some of the best young guns into his fold, knowing full well that they are a few years away from contending for the top office. He may be a caudillo-in-waiting but he may end up doing the right things after all.

Caracas Chronicles : Crabs in a bucket

It's been a while since I totally agree with JC but he hit the nail on the head with this post. We need primaries soon to be able to campaign with sufficient time for an unity ticket. Leopoldo may harbor presidential ambitions in the future but today he is saying the right things. I am really not sure on the reasons of his departure from UNT but he now knows that the only way he will remain relevant is to create his own party and place some of his people on the unity ticket. It may be a selfish strategy but by calling for primaries he has a valid one Primaries should be announced by all major opposition parties and hopefuls ASAP WITH an agreement on how to conduct it. Candidates should include, other than the obligatory anti-Chavez stand, ideas on what they are going to do to help their specific communities and the unity movement as a whole. Personally, I would love to see people not afraid to speak about what they really believe in, not some demagogy to make themselves into a "good Chavez look-a-likes" as it has happen to oppo candidates in the past. On a personal level , I wish there were individuals on the ballot that could represent my own ideas (I am a libertarian) yet, I will back any unity candidate. Lastly, I am looking forward to new generations of leaders with fresh ideas in how to solve our problems as a nation.

Caracas Chronicles : Chavismo's Idea of Press Freedom

Can anybody explain to me why we did not try to revoke the AN last July and why are we waiting 18 months to get this clowns out. All polls say that we could win this one, specially if we only need 15% of the voters to get a recall. Remember the same people that just voted for a communist education law were elected at best with a few thousand votes. By the way Carlos, let's meet in person and discuss oppo violence

Just wondering why my posts appear on my intense debate account and they do not show here, so I am going to repost what I wrote yesterday. If any of you read it, please excuse my reposting. I think that Ledezma has a huge opportunity. He has the moral authority to attack the government every day and yet has almost no formal duties left, as Chavez stripped most of his responsibilities from him. His job now is to use the fact that 700000 people voted for him to discredit the regime on every way. Even Chavistas have to agree that the guy won fair in spite of everything. Globo is no kingmaker, it does not deserve that much credit. It is just reporting on the only person that is making news that people all over Venezuela want to hear about. He is attacking Chavez directly. I never liked the guy and much less Adecos but he is kicking UNT and PJ's behind easily as opposition leader in the mind of many, including me. It may be that those political parties do have people with knowledge about what should be done and even coherent ideas on how to oppose the government but to use a Mardi Gras term "show us your tits". In the meantime, I look forward to see what Leopoldo's *and others) new party will propose."

Now we have a new battleground. This time around the oposition frankly seems OVERCONFIDENT. We are still fighting an uphill battle, with no rules to go by, only the courage of millions of Venezuelans to stand up once more against the PSUV and Chavez. He knows this time around, with an economic crisis looming large, he plays for keeps. I hope that the PJ does not forget that Yon, along with many other students, was able to rally disenchanted Venezuelans to defeat Chavez on the polls for the first time in over a decade. His first and most important task as a member of your party should be to help as much as possible with his charming persona to defeat Chavez's ambitions again.

JC I know that I am not a fan of political parties and that includes PJ. I always thought however that its ideas were closer to me than the majority of the other "oppo" brands but they lacked execution. Trust me , As a resident of Baruta, I can tell you that there is much to be desired but again, it is the best party around. That is why I voted straight PJ in the regional elections, even as I refused to campaign in any way. (I did go out to protect our votes out of instinct, I guess) Now Yon decided to join your party after much soulsearching. He and I debated party affiliations at length in the past and it forces me and many who fought together with him last year to take a look at you again. If only you would put your words into actions. Well, for our sake, I surely hope so.
