Hi Paul, I appreciate your willingness to allow me to subvert the genre, but some aspects of it seem "core" to the genre and I don't know, as I have said to Alan, whether I am willing to strap on the olde six shooter and belly up to the bar. Since my urge is to turn it on it's head, it would end up not being a Western then.

Hi Kevin, I appreciate your willingness to explore the topic! I have decided (as you can tell by my lack of interaction) against pulling this genre apart. Gender plays a huge role in the western and the subordination of women is a key component.

Alan, that is why I love DS106 so much. I can drop in and drop out according to my comfort level. As to fiction, maybe I am purist, but if I am writing anything that smacks of historical fiction, there seems a need to secure the story in the genre, which includes it's form, style or characteristics. So while Star Wars was "science fiction / fantasy" you could analyse it as a Western (good guys wear white / bad guys wear black, lots of guns). http://eleven-thirtyeight.com/2013/06/star-wars-a... has a great analysis that certainly supports your viewpoint.
Part of my problem too, was where would my place as a woman be in this genre? There are relatively few strong female characters in the western genre and usually we are subordinate to men. Yes, just recently we have started to create fictional strong "Western" women, but I am just not into strapping on a gun, to prove that I can tough it out with the boys.
Thanks so much for the feedback!

Thanks. I think the sad thing is that everyone wants to "fix" Henry. When did our society become so rigid about being different?

Well because autism is a considered a spectrum disorder, it has a very broad diagnosis. So there are many different aspects to it. And we haven't put enough time into research to really understand it or just accept that people's brains and way of thinking and approaching issues aren't all the same.

Thank you so much Susan! And I am grateful for your presence! Just another blessing I have reaped from ETMOOC! I hope 2015 is another year of connection, fun joy and laughter. Happy New Year!

I agree. I love the fact that the connections are still there and I can just jump back into a community and be welcomed!

Hi Maha,

I think that every learning attempt has an element of fear in it because we've all be trained to fear the failure inherent in the process of learning. We're not used to embracing the fear, or the failure, at least that's how it feels here in Canada. Sometimes, I don't want to learn. It's like a physical block. "I don't want to learn that and you can't make me!" A hold over from childhood I guess. So yes there is still fear, but in this type of environment, there is less. I am here, after all, of my own free will, not compelled to write or connect for a grade but solely for my own edification. So while I am occasionally reluctant to engage (often the time commitment is the biggest obstacle) because this is my choice to be here, to share and to connect, the fear is minimal.

Looking forward to future conversations!

Karen
