Hi all, I have a question about factory unlock, maybe some people here know about it?

Because I can't be sure the 3GS will have a jailbreak in a reasonable time (I have already waited >1 month without using it since I bought it), I might pay O2 UK to unlock it officially.

What does this do to the phone, is it a different baseband, and if I JB it in future, what implication is there?

Thanks for any help or technical explanation :)

Hi all, I bought a second hand 3GS a few weeks ago, it turns out to have IOS4 on it and has never been jailbroken (but it does have the old bootrom).

My question is, will the dev team (or anyone else) produce a tool for unlocking devices in this state, or is it fallen into a "black hole" and the work to hack it is not worth doing (compared to the new and exciting iPhone 4)?

Apparently I can pay the UK o2 network £15 to have it unlocked, which means I could at least then use it. That takes a couple of weeks. Should I do that or continue to wait in hope?

Thanks!

That's not good advice - I see lots of people with problems after using blackra1n. Also, it's rude to promote someone else's product on devteam's blog. I have always used their tools and have had no problem until this time. And it's now solved anyway, as you could already see.

Tried that, didn't work. I noticed pwnagetool version 3 can be used to do the same thing (with itunes to load it). That worked.
Thanks

OK, I had to downgrade it to 3.0 again. redsn0w didn't work, so I used the version 3 pwnagetool. That was successful and after that, I was able to upgrade with the 3.1.2 custom firmware, and it seems to be OK.

I have downgraded my iPhone 2G to 3.0 and am trying to unlock it using redsn0w on OS X 10.6.2.

It always gets stuck at the second "waiting for reboot". I have tried dozens of times, and I know I am doing the DFU correctly. If I connect to iTunes again, that finds the phone in DFU and I can restore from there.

How can I get past this please?

Hi, thank you for the tool as ever!

Unfortunately with my 2G iPhone (previously unlocked with QuickPwn and at OS 3.0), iTunes fails to load the custom ipsw, error 1600. I did my friend's 2G phone first with the same ipsw and it worked perfectly!

I see dozens of people here with the same problem but no credible solution posted (well, I couldn't see it). Can someone help please?
