DownSyndrome.com : Today was a rough day

Hi Sharon, Great to meet you. Where do you live? Right now I feel so confused about Teddy and his schooling. I want to be a fly on the wall to see what his days are like and how he interacts with the other kids, teacher, etc. I think he's starting to socialize with his classmates which is reassuring but I agree with you .. My anxiety about his whole educational experience is difficult to cope with. I look forward to hearing more about Trace and maybe we can commiserate with our respective experiences. Welcome to the site. Justin

DownSyndrome.com : How to Raise a Child with Down Syndrome

I really look foward to hearing other opinions on this situation. I have a 5 yr old so I haven't crossed this bridge yet. There has to be a balance between dignity and letting your brother know what is appropriate and inappropriate. Not knowing your brother, it is difficult to know the intent behind some of his actions...is it to get your attention? is it to simply be mischeivious? I know my son will dump out a glass of liquid anytime he passes one...Drive us crazy but it is something that seems to be apart of his personality that can't be easily changed. Do you practice timeout? I personally don't think the pavlovian water splashing is going to be healthy/productive in the future but again I am not a subject matter expert here. Other thoughts anyone? Justin

You epitomize everything that is good in our World. It is so easy to be selfish and negative. The fact that you have taken on this responsibility and march forward is the best / most important thing to do. Just love that kiddo and everything is going to be wonderful. As I said before -- this is between you and your baby. Nothing else really matters. I look forward to getting to know you and your family better. Justin

Hi Niamh, First, thank you for the very personal and frank comment. This is a very difficult situation for most of us...Teddy is just 5 and hasn't even progressed to where Zach has been...I see ebbs and flows with Teddy across just about everything he does...From speech to comprehension, motor skills, and certainly going to the bathroom. In my opinion, the diverse abilities of our children are very difficult to understand. Why one child can do somethings really well while others cant. This is one of the plights we all have. I look forward to hearing and learning more about your unique experience. Any other parents have thoughts on this subject? Justin
