At the moment I'm using a Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ8 which is a great point and shoot (it has manual options too, like a DSLR). I've been using the Lumix for two years now and it's a great camera to start with. I think the cost is not too far away from a DSLR though - Canon 1000d or the Nikon d3000 - so if you think you'll keep it up you may want to take a look at those :) I think they both come with primary lens 18-55mm. My new Nikon d3000 will arrive in a few months (I hope a little bit early).
