elephant journal: Yoga, Sustainability, Politics, Spirituality. : Ten (More) Characters You May Encounter in Yoga Class.

Hi everyone, Allow me to quote from the original "Ten Characters" article I posted here on Elephant Journal a while back: "Maybe you’ve encountered one, or two, or all ten of these “characters” in your yoga class. Perhaps you even fit one of the descriptions yourself. But however annoying these people may seem, they do more for our practice than we may realize. The people that we resist, the people we judge and love to hate, they’re the ones we should be the most grateful for, because they are our mirrors. They show us sides of ourselves we have been unable to recognize. Yet it is for this very reason that we step onto the mat – to explore these feelings, to come to terms with them, and finally, to accept that even though we might not be there yet, we’re doing the yoga, which brings us one step closer than we were before." Please know that it was not in any way my intention to be mean-spirited or judgmental. The concluding paragraph of my original article very much applies here! I assumed - which appears to have been a grave error on my part - that readers would have understood that this was merely a "continuation" of my original post, if you will. I apologize if I've offended anyone, or if what I have written does not appeal to your particular sense of humour. However, prior to judging my character as a person and as a yoga teacher, I would hope that those who accuse me so harshly of being critical would take the time to read more before perpetuating a cycle they seem so fervently opposed to.

Hi, YeshuDas! Thank you for reading! I actually haven't heard that about Iyengar, but I find that fact quite fascinating. Do you think it was because he thought that savasana could become too overwhelming emotionally?

DukkhaGirl, I agree that it can be uncomfortable for people to be alone simply because modern society seems to dictate that somehow, being alone is "weird" or "not okay". It appears that you have a very balanced approach - I love that you appreciate the company of others, but also enjoy your solitude.

Reed: What you say is very true. I think that it's important for us to value, build and maintain a positive relationship with ourselves before we are able to invest in community, etc. I find that the more I find peace with myself, the more I am able to reach out to others. What are your thoughts?
