Good luck in your career. My advice is to go in open-minded about your rate. You make a little less money as a non-rate but the experience is invaluable in discovering what you have to offer as Coast Guardsmen. Those were by far the most exciting and rewarding times of my career.

The benefit goes beyond law enforcement in and of itself. I would expect them to be much more knowledgeable about laws and regulations. Things like fisheries or BTM school are good but also short. I think it can only further the competency of the B-teams they work with and the successful execution of our LE missions in general.

What in the world would prevent an ME from being a maritime professional? Do you also believe it impossible for FSs, YNs or SKs to become worthy seamen?

I just got done catching up on my iCommandant reading and I have a question...do you think that the old man is under-utilizing his blog? It does a good job of keeping people informed about what he's doing and the topics he feels are important. I just wonder why he doesn't solicit comments and ideas more than he does. It seems like the information flow there is kind of one-way. I think we saw through a few of MCPOCG's recent posts that people are willing to participate. I thought that was the promise of social technologies. How come he's never explicitly asked for people to tell him about how modernization is affecting them, positively or negatively, down at the deckplate? I know he cares, so why not ask? I'm NOT trying to start a dogpile here. I know that his guest posts and such go a long way towards gaining "buy-in" for social media from the rest of the flag mess and other decision makers. That is important. I get that. It just seems like he's limiting the potential of his blog by not encouraging people to communicate more than he does (comments from TJ and his ilk not withstanding).

CGBlog.org :: An Unofficial Coast Guard Blog : Why the Coast Guard demands blogging in the clear

Here's my take. If you wish to raise the level of discourse, perhaps you should moderate comments more aggressively. Making everyone post in the clear would raise the level of civility but your pool of commenters would be significantly decreased and so would the size of the discussion. Another suggestion would be to make sure more of your posts are geared towards initiating conversation. Your post on Terry Dickerson today is a perfect example. In summary, guide the conversation, don't pen it up.

I'm really trying to be civil about this Mike but you are in no position to point the finger at anyone as unobjective. Just because your agenda is well-known doesn't mean your myriad accusations are objective.

I would ask what she felt about social technology in light of her personal experience. Would she ever initiate a OCR blog, for example? Can we expect more direct responses from her once the coast is clear as far as hearings are concerned? While the report largely discredited the individual who calls himself Thomas Jackson, it didn't exactly paint her in a very positive light either. As a member, I'd really just like to hear her side of the story, uncut. P.S. Peter, see we can ask real questions pseudonymously.

I wonder when that whistle-blower reward money is going to dry up? With any luck you took a bath in stocks over the last 6 months and will have to get a real job soon. Maybe then you'll have less time to run around scooping up Adm Blore's poop looking for the truth.

He's right. Your 15 are up. We're all happy you pointed out how crappy the 123s were.
