/Film : Which Path Will Orci, Kurtzman and Lindelof Choose For Star Trek 2?

I say be brave...be original. We just don't need another film that uses an already tried and true plot line or character arc no matter what kind of spin they put on it. You can use Klingons, use Romulans... hell have the Klingons and Romulans get into a galactic war and beat the living shit out of each other and the Enterprise and the Federation try to stay out of it and yet get pulled in. Hell, make subtle political or social statements like Roddenberry and the crew did in TOS that will go way over an average audience member's head but reaches out to those keeping their eyes open (critics and real Trekkies who don't live in their mother's basement love that shit). BUT have somebody really evil pulling the strings--a new BIG BAD (and not someone with Godlike powers)...someone like, dare I say it, a Ben Linus of the Star Trek universe. Yeah, okay...cast Michael Emerson. There I said it. I'll shut up now.

/Film : What If Critics Weren't Allowed to See the End of a Film?

I absolutely LOVED the first "20th Century Boys" film which came out in December. I watched it in March on DVD and though it was brilliant. I went out and bought all the manga and have been read through volume one. I can't wait to see the second and third films and I for one think that what Toho is doing is great. This is one story that where prior knowledge of what's going to happen would kill it. I have deliberately refused to watch the subsequent trailers for the next two films because of this. No spoilers for this! It would kill it!

Aronofsky doesn't need "Robocop" or any other remake for that matter. Hopefully this will stay in development hell and then go away...

/Film : The Up Subplot That Didn't Make The Cut

PIXAR, Pete Docter, and everyone else involved with this film could have pulled off this plot point. I think this could have worked brilliantly and made an already brilliant film that much more special.

He'll be back, probably in the last episode, but I think this is pretty much a lock now. The DS ring and Jacob giving Hurley the guitar saying that it wasn't his is pretty much a give away. Of course, this is LOST and anything can happen.

/Film : Breaking Bad: Season Finale

You know I haven't been a big fan of this series, but I watched casually this season and all of the finale. And I've just got one thing to say with anyone who was disappointed with the finale---Are you PEOPLE OUT OF YOUR MINDS? That was brilliant! Sheer fucking brilliance. Ranks right up there with the Fringe finale and just a little below the Lost one. I just watched seasons one and two all the way through this week and now consider myself a fan of this show. It's not about God or Satan. That's bullshit. Lucifier ex machina--Good God who the fuck came up with that shit. Walt made the meth that caused this shit to happen. He's responsible. Everything else is blatant metaphor or karmic retribution.

/Film : Avatar Running Time is Over Two and a Half Hours

I would prefer to see this film in IMAX 3D just for the massive screen but if they have to shorten this film to make it fit that format, I say don't do it. I would rather see this film in 2D with a 35 mm print than see it shortened. Hell, I want a three hour plus science fiction opus. And if it sucks (which I highly doubt) I'll never revisit it. I'm glad Cameron scares the shit out of Fox and Rothman. I just wish there were more filmmakers out there like him.

/Film : James Cameron Talks Avatar at E3

Caught the entire Ubisoft conference and was very impressed by Cameron's talk. Whatever you feel about him, the man is a passionate artist and cares a lot about his work. When speaking about AVATAR and how it took him 16 years to get it going, it gave me inspiration about my own projects. I actually have some friends who went to the 70mm screening of ALIENS and THE ABYSS the other night and they were also impressed with his passion about AVATAR and filmmaking in general. By finally going in front of cameras and talking about the new film, he lifted the curtain back just a little more on what this is all about it. Sounds to me like AVATAR is DANCES WITH WOLVES set in space which is definitely cool in my book...

/Film : Pixar's Up - What Did You Think?

I too saw it at an advanced screening but just got back today from taking my mom to see it. My mom is about Carl's age and she really fell in love with him. This is Pixar's most grown up and adult film even though we have Kevin and Dug along for the ride to provide a lot of comic relief. My mom remarked, "you know this just isn't a film for kids." Both times I have seen this film I have wept openly at.... SPOILER BABY, don't read if you don't want to know------------------- at Ellie's death (I start blubbering when that little blue balloon floats into her hospital room). And tears start rolling down when Carl realizes that its okay to let go of that green lawn hose and just let his old life with Ellie and the house be done. Russell becomes the child that Carl and Ellie could not have and fills a void in Carl's life that has been missing for a long, long time. And that's what makes Carl's revelation just that. He has a new family to take care of and grow with. This film could easily be a sapfest but Pixar never makes that mistake. UP is that beautiful, profound spiritual experience that everyone of us needs from time to time. I could hurl more hyperbole on to this film like a lot of people (I'm looking at you Harry Knowles) but that's not necessary. UP is 10 out of 10 and if it doesn't get a nomination for best picture, we all know that the fix is in (Hell, we know that anyway, but...). I'll just leave this for everybody...do yourself a favor and go see this film RIGHT NOW!!!

/Film : Is This a Powersuit From James Cameron's Avatar?

Hype bordering on the ridiculous when it comes to AVATAR? Really? You know this film will jump off the screen and kill you if you don't like it right? Well, so be it. Two weekends a go a friend of mine was shown footage from the film showing some soldiers with big guns destroying something on Pandora as well as scenes showing Pandora's vistas. His response was that it just looked "okay" and ultimately he felt that a lot of what he saw looked like the visuals in the Japanese film, Casshern. He was left feeling that this film will not be the be all end all that it has been hyped to be. However, that doesn't mean, he said, it won't be a great film. He said he was only shown FX footage, some it still incomplete, and nothing about the plot or characters. We'll see...

/Film : Star Wars Turns 32 Years Old

I was 4 years old when I saw STAR WARS (we were still a couple of years away from A NEW HOPE) in the summer of 1977. I lived in rural Missouri, and the nearest theatre showing it was in St. Louis, nearly an hour and a half away. The two local theatres of course were not showing it. I believe this was several weeks after STAR WARS had originally opened, and lo and behold my family and I didn't have to wait very long after that to see it. Strangely, my two local theatres did not get it. Instead it opened at a theatre which was still about 35 minutes away from where we lived. We went opening night and actually arrived late just as the Star Destroyer flew over chasing the Blockade Runner. We had missed the opening crawl but that didn't matter at the time. For the next two hours I sat and watched without moving, utterly enthralled by what I was seeing. STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE has become one of my all time favorite films and I watch at least a couple or more times a year. As better a film as EMPIRE is, A NEW HOPE is just where its at for me. I love it and I always will... Even after the prequels, I have to give George Lucas a big thanks for turning me into a SW fan and also into a fan of great films...
