Race Relations Project : South Park...off the hook?

I may sound like an idiot, but I think that this is completely ridiculous. Now like a comment before mine, I can see how people in Muslim culture may be offended, but I mean, look at the show and what it’s made for. It was created solely to make fun of things. I mean it’s a story that surrounds fourth graders and it seems to me like they make it to show that these things they make fun of can be understood by fourth graders better than older people. Like, it’s a joke. These feelings are supposed to arise. Like I said, sensitivity is ridiculous when dealing with South Park. Sit back and laugh and realize that making fun of people isn’t all that bad, especially when it’s a blatant joke.

Race Relations Project : Christian Invaders - the turnaround

First off, I have to say congratulations to Sam for an outstanding lecture. I don’t care if it pissed anyone off at all, I thought it was excellent. It was so true and so realistic. The way that we look at it is that “Oh yay America! Let’s save the world from bad guys!” But then if you look at it from their perspective, we are the fucking bad guys. See, I don’t blame them at all. I was one of those people that raised my hand when he asked if we would join the insurgency. Who wouldn’t protect themselves from invaders? Boy does that raise an interesting point! Ok, so when the class initially started, I thought that it was going to be about the U.S., but a little further back. Ok, so think of the American Revolution. Were they really patriots? Honestly, say right now Puerto Rico wanted complete independence from the U.S. What would we do? We would probably call them rebels and try to kill them. Look what happened in the Civil War. The south wanted to break away, so what did we do? Called them rebels and killed them. But see, when we rose up against the intrusive and wrong doing British, we were patriots. We did what we had to for the common good because the British we “terrible people”. Now look to the side of the insurgency. They want to kill us because we are “terrible people”. We invaded their land, killed their people, took their oil, and now what? Are they going to simply sit back and let that happen? Fuck no! I sure wouldn’t. Now here is my question. Why did people support the war in the first place? I’m sorry, but we are a really, really dumb country: First, for electing George W. , second for believing the lies that he and the other idiots fed us. Now see, I couldn’t vote in that election, so I couldn’t really do much, nor did I know much, but what about the people that saw the first Iraq War? Sure we helped out Kuwait when Iraq invaded, but we should also know that little Bush was upset because Sadaam threatened his father so wah wah wah. See, I wasn’t even alive for that but I’m not stupid enough to not know that. My last point which I stated on a previous post is that it really kills me that we Americans have such an anti-Muslim view. Like, holy shit people, how fucking dumb are you? I think the entire Republican party should be booted. They are nuts. Now I am a Democrat, and not to say that there aren’t Dems that should be thrown out too, but come on. Sarah Palin, John McCain, Michelle Bachman (the absolute worst politician in American history), Rush Limbaugh, Karl Rove, and though he isn’t a politician, Glen Beck is fucking crazy. Listen to what these people say as they hastily generalize and create hatred for Muslims. Is it just me or is that indescribably wrong?

Race Relations Project : What about the "occupied territories"?

This is an excellent point that was brought up. But I think it’s very easy to answer: We, as Americans (and as humans), are self-interested, thus with Israel being pretty much our sole ally in the Middle East, we aren’t going to speak out against them even if it is the right thing to do. See, I guess you can say that it wouldn’t be very “strategic” to do that. I think it’s bull shit, but who am I to tell the government what to do. All I can say is that it’s sad but it’s true that we are actually a pretty corrupt society.

Race Relations Project : The tyranny of radical Muslims...

I think that what this girl said is a very good thing. It pains me to see when people constantly generalize Arab looking people and immediately call them out and think that they are radical and are going to blow themselves up. You know, my uncle was once called a “terrorist piece of shit” out in Michigan shortly following 9/11. My family isn’t even Arab, we’re Italian so naturally darker complected with darker features. That’s when you know things have gone wrong. I’m also happy that in class we saw the slides and watched the videos of that church in the Dakotas. That right there shows a lot about Americans and our never dying hypocrisy.

Race Relations Project : This is totally off the hook

Ok all you sensitive people out there listen up. Just because there is a game like this on the market doesn’t mean that you have to buy it or even play it. I mean, in a free world, you can make games like this. Yeah, people can be offended all they want to. But come on, does that mean you have to partake in this game? Do people force you to play it or watch it? No! So why does anyone care? Ok, I’m gonna compare this to gay rights. Say you support gay rights, but it grosses you out to watch gay people in action. Is anyone forcing you to watch it? Is anyone making you do it? No! What, this is corrupting the youth? Then parents do your fucking job and don’t let your kids play this game. Like, why is it that the government has to come in and say, “Now game developers, we are taking this off the shelves because kids are gonna rape each other.” Don’t let parents off the hook. Quit running to the government. As along with many other issues affecting kids, the first person in line to discipline them is the parents. If they can’t do that, then they shouldn’t have kids. If this game was out when I was younger, my mom would NEVER have let me play this, and she would’ve kicked my ass if I did. Come on, get real. And Sam, your response to this isn’t “conservative” like you claim to be. Contradiction maybe?

Race Relations Project : I really want to know also...

Very good question my man. In my opinion, I think it really depends on who you are as a person. If you came into this class having no opinions whatsoever on race, then yeah, I think Sam will definitely influence your opinion. Me personally, I think that he hasn’t influenced my opinion because I have already agreed with a lot of what he said, but I think he has done a very good job of reinforcing my opinion. Because of this class, I will be much more open minded than I already was. I think he has done a good job of really getting into things with people that a lot of people would avoid. He brings the issues into the open and allows the student to either form an opinion from it, or to keep their own opinion.

Race Relations Project : Flip the Script for a Moment

Sam, I’m going to agree with you one hundred percent. You know, I’m one of those people who like to question everything. I like to find answers to things that a lot of people don’t care about. Social interaction captivates me and nothing else interests me more than trying to find out why people tick the way they do. It blew my mind that people got so offended by that comment. Like, why is it such a touchy subject? EVERY WOMAN DOES IT. Just like men like to brag about the size of the shits that they take. I agree a lot with what you said in class about how if women ruled the world it would be perfectly acceptable. They would be bragging about it instead of sheltering it. Like I’ve said repeatedly, people need to quit being so damn sensitive to dumb things. By the way, I would love to have your job. And be able to be as open about things.

Race Relations Project : Those Dolls Say Alot About Who We Are

I still don’t really know what to think of this video other than the fact that it’s sad. I really don’t like how this mentality even started. I think that we can put some blame on the media. They advertise that white is beautiful. Even when they feature black people in their ads, I still feel like they are made to look like the mainstream. That’s pretty much what it all stems from is the main stream. People want to have that popular look because they think it looks good. But what they fail to realize is that individuality is beautiful. People are made a certain way for a reason.

Race Relations Project : Nothing About the Census is Easy

Well, where do I begin? Let’s start with this: QUIT BEING SO DAMN SENSITIVE. Alright, being sensitive is cool when you have a reason to be. It shows that you have a heart, something many people seem to hide. But come on, really? Taking negro offensively? I think it was hilarious how the one black dude in the video goes “Is it negro or negro? Wait, negro in English?” Dude, do you not realize that it doesn’t matter how you say it, it still means “black” in Spanish? It was a word that was adopted in the United States for some reason by somebody. But who really cares? Negro is not offensive; it’s an adjective meaning black. Now if the other “n” word was used, then you can complain and burn the Census Bureau’s office to the ground. Here is another thing: Yeah, it is really easy for white people to just choose white. But do you want my explanation? I would say it’s because if you broke white people up into their cultural groups, you would have a census form that was HUGE. Back in the day, they used to try to separate people, but now there are so many racial groups that that would be too over-the-top, and now many of us have assimilated into one another. Imagine a census form that says Italian, German, Irish, Scottish, English, French, Russian, etc. I would go with Italian because I’m predominantly Italian, but it would still be super confusing, so white is easy. Now as far as Hispanics go, I think they specify that because there are many unique groups of Hispanics in the United States. If you are Mexican, do you want to be considered Puerto Rican? Many of these people still hold true to the cultures they are from, so they are able to choose what they are. I think since Hispanic populations are just recently growing rapidly in the United States then that’s why it is specified. Maybe 50 years from now they will be either grouped in with white people or black people. My bottom line to this whole thing is for people to quit getting so offended. I feel like now people get offended just to get offended. They bitch just to bitch. I agree with everyone else completely who has said that. You know, I like to bitch. Who doesn’t? But it gets old bitching about the same thing over and over again. Do you think the United States government intentionally seeks to piss people off? Because I think that’s the last thing they need. People always find a way to attack the government. Now though they can be corrupt (which I do believe), there is no reason to call them out about this. They want to give you people money, so shut up. I won’t complain if I get some money.

Race Relations Project : What are all of you thinking about Asians?

I feel as though Asians are over looked because they are probably the most similar minority group to white people. I mean, what else would explain it? In my opinion, I don’t think it matters anyway, I’m in the reversal stage, I don’t really want to talk about race. I just want to be a person. I’m an American with Italian heritage, but that doesn’t get brought up at all. I don’t look like other Americans with European heritage, but I don’t give a shit. We are all people, and we are all in America. So I feel that if you are a resident of this country, you are American to me. We can all poke fun at each other’s differences, but at the end of the day, we are still 99% identical human beings. I have always thought about this though: Say a couple hundred years from now (if we don’t all die in 2012), do you think there will be a truly American race? By this I mean, do you think after all of the intermixing of the races, will people be able to distinguish American’s from people around the world? That would be interesting….

You know, I’m quite impressed with the way she went about saying that. She is happy she bleeds because she can give life. That is a beautiful thing. The ability to bring another being into this life is a truly amazing thing, so why is bleeding so disgusting? Everyone bleeds, and everyone has blood in their bodies, unless they are dead. It’s the same as saying, “I gotta take a shit.” Are people going to get creeped out about this? I mean apparently girls must not poop since they get so grossed out by it. Next topic: Ejaculation. Let’s see how people feel about that.

Race Relations Project : Is this just a few bad apples?

Wow. You know, maybe this will finally help me to understand some of the struggles Civil Rights leaders went through in achieving what they wanted. Now granted, obviously this isn’t as harsh, but come on! Socialism? Do people even really know what socialism is? Or are they just going to keep watching Fox Noise? The definition of socialism is: a system of society or group living in which there is no private property. Ok, so by this definition, it’s pretty much saying that the government owns everything. But is this the case? I think not. Now granted, it does require people who do not have insurance to buy it. Now tell me this, is it any different than having to buy car insurance in order to drive? Some may say, “You don’t have to drive,” but honestly, who isn’t going to drive? Currently, as I write, I’m watching a debate between Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Minority Leader Mitch McConell. The Republican, Mr. McConell, says that it will cost taxpayers billions, and it will make their premiums go up. But, as noted by Harry Reid, the Senate Commerce Committee has already crunched the numbers, and over the next ten years, we will save over $130 billion, and in the ten years following that, we will save $1.3 trillion. Now I don’t know about you, but that sounds pretty damn great to me. Well enough with my rant on that, back to the Tea Parties. If you look at the pictures, the people who seem to be involved are old. Now do I have a problem with old people? Not at all, but what I do have a problem with is the fact that these are the people who sit at home and listen to everything the media says. How do I know this? Because I have a 90-year old Great Grandmother who does this, along with multiple other elderly people I know. They are persuaded easily by these things, and maybe that’s part of the reason this is happening. Now, I’m not going to blame the media for the slurs that people were shouting at the representatives. That’s just plain wrong. What is this nation coming to when we have to yell slurs at our national representatives based solely on what the media is telling us? Who doesn’t want to be able to get health insurance? There are people that die in this country everyday because they don’t have insurance and they can’t afford to pay out of pocket. Insurance companies are as corrupt as they come, for instance, look at AIG. Oh, look, we got a bail out after we insured mortgages that we knew would fall through, let’s screw the people we cover and go on a trip to a resort! Fuck that, the corruption that plagues this country makes me sick to my stomach. Hello Canada!

Race Relations Project : I Reckon She Can Hit

I think that this is a great thing for women, but I agree with the first post. I think that it is significant, yet I don’t think it should be publicized as highly as it is. This is my reasoning: If people want equality, then why do we single them out when they obtain something? Yes, she is a woman, but by pointing it out that she is a woman, I think that it points to the fact that this is a big deal because she isn’t “equal”. I feel that publicizing this reinforces that. See, in my eyes, people are people. Whoever is fit to do something, should be allowed and encouraged to do it. I have never really held any prejudice towards anyone, and I don’t plan on starting any time soon. Maybe that is why I feel the way I feel. Still, congratulations on winning the job, I hope she does well.

Race Relations Project : Does this rudeness thing cut both ways?

This is a very, very good question, and I think through this semester, Sam has tried to answer it as best as possible. I think white people are scared of bringing up racial topics. I’m a white person myself, but I have a mixed family with my one aunt’s side of the family being black. Even with that said, I am still scared to bring up the race question because I feel that colored people take it more to heart than white people do. Now this could be because of many different reasons, but in my opinion I think it is due to the treatment of colored people in the past. We as white people haven’t been discriminated against as harshly as those with colored skin. Now I am predominantly Italian-American, and I know that my ancestors were discriminated against when they first arrived in the early 20th century, but I don’t think that it was as harsh as the treatment of colored people. When I hear someone say dago or wop, I don’t usually get too offended, I just like to think they’re jealous.

Race Relations Project : Prom or No Prom: Just Don't Let the Queer Students Dance Together

This is quite troubling to me. The nerve of any human being to deny another’s right to “mingle” with another human being is preposterous. Now, I don’t want this to seem like a generalization, but I’m not surprised at all that this school was in Mississippi. In my mind, the South as a whole still has negative feelings toward this “changing world” that, say, Glenn Beck sees (BTW, Glenn Beck is a monster.) My uncle used to travel for work, and he once told me a story about his visit to the South. He said a lot of the south has gotten over issues that separated the races and other groups of people, but that Mississippi reminded him of what the 1850’s would have looked like. Close-minded, discriminatory people that hated everything except the Evangelical white people. Now I’m not saying that all of Mississippi is like this, because that would be rude of me to say, but I do believe that area has an effect on this situation. Now getting back to the situation itself, I think this adds to the many instances of discrimination towards LGBT people that should call on federal law to protect these individual’s rights. Just like the Civil Rights acts that were passed in the 60’s, it’s time for the federal government to ensure the rights of these people as well. It’s not fair to only ensure rights for certain people, and not others. People need to put behind them their own thoughts, and think as if they were in those people’s shoes. What effect do LGBT people have on straight people? What, does it disgust someone to see them sharing affection with their significant others? Who cares, look away. No one forces anybody to pay attention to people’s affections. If these girls went to the prom, why would anyone pay attention to them anyway? Obviously their dates weren’t good enough that they had to pay attention to someone else. It’s no one else’s business, as long as they aren’t intentionally being obnoxious and interfering with people, then there is no reason to pay them any attention. On a brighter note, it does make me feel good that the ACLU has taken up her case. This organization still gives people hope that are treated unfairly. Also, the support of her parents should add some comfort to her. It’s pretty sad that they had to cancel the prom over this though. But quite frankly, if these two girls can’t go, then why should anyone else be allowed to? At least in this respect, everyone is treated equally. My final thought is: how much longer must this discrimination go on in our country before it destroys us? I guess we have to wait and see.

Race Relations Project : Native Americans, Oil, Tribal Division, $$$

This may be troubling to some people. Native American culture has always advocated a direct relationship with nature. A famous quote from Chief Seattle states, “Earth does not belong to us; we belong to Earth.” Going by this quote, drilling into the Earth should be taboo, let alone establishing dug in settlements and claiming land. I can’t go too far though, as I don’t think these people can be held accountable for their lifestyles. The earlier people of this great country are the ones who put Native Americans where they are now. We tried to assimilate them into our culture and into our thinking, and those that resisted were killed. That’s why those that still remain take part in the “American” culture of property ownership. Now with that being said, another grave thing comes up. I really hope that this new found wealth goes toward the right things. Since Native American’s are in the greatest poverty, a big lump of money might be spent on luxury items that they never had the opportunity to have in the past. Instead of investing in their futures, they may be quick to go out and buy that new car or house, much like the article said. If I were them, I would start investing in the future of my children and their children, because you truly never know when the oil might run out, or when someone might come in and try to take it over. Also, the fact that there is an available casino is a worry. Between the alcohol and drugs that Native Americans are known to abuse, I don’t think gambling would be a good idea. After about 15 shots of Cuervo and a handful of shrooms, that extra $10,000 on the craps table would probably seem like a really good idea, until you wake up two days later and realize that all of that hard work on the oil rig went to nothing and you are back at square one, ripping more shots of Cuervo to get over the pain. I can say this though: I’m happy the federal government isn’t getting involved. I’m happy no one else is getting involved. This is oil that was struck on land given to these people for the unreal treatment they received from the early migrants to this country. The sad part though is that if the government would have known about the oil before granting this land to Native’s, they wouldn’t have gotten it. I have no doubt in my mind whatsoever that the Feds would’ve taken this land as their own. Overall I still find is disturbing that these people were treated wrongly in the first place. But since they were lucky enough to strike this wealth, let them have at it and for once, let them be free.

Race Relations Project : Native Americans: Question Two

I can agree with Vincent’s comment. He wasn’t here, I wasn’t here, hell, none of us were here in the 1800’s when all the brutality escalated. But I then think about the issues surrounding us today. This stuff is still going on. Though it isn’t nearly as bad as it was before, it is still happening, and we aren’t really doing anything to stop it. So in that respect, we can take blame. I also think about what Sam said about modern day slavery and the fact that we all own something that a slave has most likely worked in some way to produce. The computer that I’m using right now most likely contains parts manufactured by slaves, whether it is the parts themselves or the raw materials needed to make the parts. When I look at it like that, then I realize I can take blame, because before we can change the wrong doings that are still present today, we must change them ourselves.

Race Relations Project : Native Americans: Question One

I feel that education should start early about matters like this. Now I’m not suggesting Kindergarten students learn this, because that might be too soon. They need to first learn the basics, mathematics, science, handwriting, etc. I do think that this should be taught before middle school though, probably around the 3rd or 4th grade. The problem is that textbooks don’t talk about this stuff. Is it because we are embarrassed with the way we treated people? Or is it because we don’t want to tarnish our image as freedom loving and just people? The education system as a whole would have to be addressed in order for any improvement to take place.

Race Relations Project : Another Reason Why Gay Marriage Matters

Obviously, this is quite troubling. I have always gotten into giant debates with people about this issue. In my mind, it all starts with morality: Is it morally right or wrong for LGBT people to be married? In my opinion, it is nobody's business what anyone wants to do. It's their own lives, so why is it right for a third party to decide what they can and cannot do? Since when can you differentiate love? Love is a natural feeling, and the fact that is can happen between a man and a woman or two members of the same sex shouldn't matter. Love is love, and from someone who has felt this all-powerful emotion, it's not gonna matter who you are in love with, you are gonna want to share your life with them. It's a personal connection that should never be disrupted. So because some guys wrote in a book a couple thousand years ago that basically God will smite you for being gay, then obviously it is true. False. I was born and raised a Catholic and the first thing I was taught was that the Catholic Church is open and understanding for anyone. It's a caring church. Little did I know once I got older I would be taught that homosexuals deserve to be killed and that it's a choice and only bad people make it. Let's just say I don't affiliate with the church anymore. Until this country is taken away from its traditional Evangelical, religious background, we won't see any change in the attitudes of people towards gay marriage. This video has taught me a lot. First, that people don't really have hearts. If they did, why would they do this then? Yeah, as an employee of the government, you have to do what you are told. But who are these people making these orders to deport people? Did they not realize they would ruin an entire family? Maybe if they took the time to look at their own family and put themselves in the position of these women. I truly believe that one day this will all change, once the older, less accepting generations die off and the youth takes over. Now maybe I’m wrong, but I feel that because of the environment we are raised in now, we are more aware of the negative effects that decisions being put in place have on people. My bottom line is this: Look deep down into your hearts and ask yourselves why there is such a negative attitude towards gay marriage. Does it really have any effect on you or anyone surrounding you? Gay marriage affects only those involved. So I don’t think anyone else deserves an opinion, but since everyone makes them, keep the negative aspects to yourself. And remember, what if that happened to your family?

Race Relations Project : I Guess It Pays to Learn a Bit About Other People

I can't agree with this. Alright, if someone showed a bomb or a gun, then I'm sure there would be a need for concern. But just because someone is praying in a strange way, does that mean that they are terrible? This is a direct relation to the new found hatred for Arab people due to the 9/11 attacks. First, let's go off on a tangent. Thirteen of the sixteen hijackers during 9/11 were from Saudi Arabia. So why did we ever go to war with Iraq? Oil and hatred for Muslims. Another thing is that people are jealous, like I said in my last post. I don't have enough to say about this other than it is disturbing. I'm not Jewish, but I am catholic, so I understand the discrimination. Final thoughts: This is ridiculous. People will never change. Let's deal with it.
