I don't think that people are pro-choice because the government says abortion is legal. There were lots of abortions while it was illegal, and there would be plenty if it were made illegal again. People aren't all sheep - many people have deeply held beliefs that agree with the government sometimes and disagree other times. Not everyone who is pro-choice or pro-life is a "sheeple".

It's not the same thing to a liberal. People who are pro-choice don't see abortion as murder. They think that unborn babies aren't people in the same sense that you are I are people. It might appear to be the same thing to you, but it's not to them.

I don't think it's fair to call Muslim convert left wing. I tend to doubt that he's pro-choice, in favor of women's or gay rights or opposed to religion in the public square. Just because he's a Muslim doesn't make him a left-winger. He's probably one of the most right wing people out there. Just a different religion. I don't get your point. If you can't make abortion illegal tomorrow (and you probably can't), why not reduce the number of abortions? Why not give girls something better to do than get pregnant? According to the polls, nobody likes abortions. I personally think they're awful. If there are ways to reduce the number of abortions, I'm not going to let my desire to see zero prevent me from seeing fewer. Should the perfect be the enemy of the good?

I am so sorry about your pain. I hope you find peace. You sound like a loving and wonderful person.

You can also feel sorry for those who don't share your feelings and your values, but I can say with some confidence (of course one never knows anyone 100%) that they are ok, and that they haven't had to hide their feelings from themselves or others. They have different values. People in this world are very different. They just don't see their action as ending a life and they haven't been and probably won't be changed.

Someone else said it in a different comment: we all know right from wrong when it comes to murder. But we don't all believe the same things about the unborn. These are people who would never ever hurt anyone intentionally, let alone kill anyone. They are loving and kind and generous. It sounds like a paradox but they just don't see it. That may make many people angry and sad, but it's what they believe, and as you know from religion discussions, beliefs are strong and hard to change.

I feel a but silly trying to make this point because it's more important to me to tell you that I feel deeply for your pain and I really hope you find love and support from the people around you to help you heal and be happy.

Does that mean that you should avoid listening to people who you disagree with? Do you need to keep debate at arms length, so people aren't confronted with the opportunity to hear the other side? Is debate something that should be done in dark corners, away from center stage? Good for a university who feels strongly enough about its position to be able to handle listening to the president of their country, even if they disagree with him.

I am very sorry about what happened to you and your regret at what you did. You are not a hypocrite. You learned something about yourself, albeit too late. You should tell your story to teach others and hopefully prevent women who would otherwise have regrets from making the same mistake. . But then you should let them decide for themselves. I know a couple of women very well who had abortions and are not tormented by their decisions. One did it 10 years ago; another about 35 years ago.

What do you do about IVF eggs stored in freezers? There are gazillions of 'em. When these are destroyed, is that murder? I don't think I'm going to stand in front of any supernatural creature and have to account for myself. There are so many thousands of religions and I don't believe in any of them. I think we have to make our decisions based on our values and our sense of right and wrong. Otherwise, who is to say that the Muslims aren't correct and women shouldn't be stoned for showing their faces?

You're completely right. There are lots of people who don't believe that life begins at conception. They really believe that. And as long as they believe that, it'll be impossible to convince them that abortion is the same as murder. How do you convince people that destroying a fetus is murder when there are gazillions of fertilized eggs in fertility clinics? These eggs are destroyed or go bad over time. Is that murder? Negligent homicide? You have the right question, I think.

Not quite already, but within 200 years. I don't think the scientists who study global warming have suggested that we shouldn't have winter anymore. Global warming is about disruption.
