True. Good. Beautiful. : The Catastrophe of Success by Tennessee Williams

Controlling idea... that physical comfort would seem to bring happiness, but brings the opposite. It's the kernel of many a story... a Prince and Pauper kind of trope too.

True. Good. Beautiful. : Jeff Bridges in Crazy Heart

Because of his indie background and gritty persona, Bridges seems more award-worthy than Clooney as an actor, but I have a feeling that Up in the Air is a better film. This is my uneducated opinion, because I haven't seen Crazy Heart. However, I haven't talked to anybody who disliked Up in the Air. I've talked to two people who were not crazy about Crazy Heart. It's safe to say that both films will be nominated!

True. Good. Beautiful. : David Lynch and Maharishi - the Giggling Guru's post-Beatlemania Legacy

Good points. The scandal went as far as a few opportunist media wanted to carry it. Innocent until proven guilty is an important principle. I don't mean to perpetuate rumor, no matter how much I may mistrust the Maharishi.

True. Good. Beautiful. : Spotify Invitation

Great comment. The trick now is to ensure a viable wireless internet service... whether that is a 4G network for mobile devices or a wimax network. Disney's Keychain idea is banking on the future of TV and movies streaming from the "cloud." What do you mean by Clear Channel type control?

True. Good. Beautiful. : FlashForward: The Future

Two interesting points - that it\\\'s based on a book that could spoil the grand premise (more on that) and that it has to end this April. The first episode was awesome, but after a few episodes, I must say I\\\'m tired of being strung along. I feel used. They could toy with me for a whole season and then just start hinting at the easiest cop-out of all: the supernatural (like in the umpteenth season of Lost). However, Aaron you made me think of a brilliant marketing possibility. What if they are planning some cool publicity stunts for April 2010? We should not be surprised that, not coincidentally, a new episode of FlashForward will air on that Thursday night, April 29th 2010. When the characters catch up to the \\\"future\\\" present, will it also be our present? This is going to make social media go nuts. Congrats Marc Guggenheim and David Goyer for an intriguing show. Now, stop stringing us along and drop some more hints.

I agree that Spotify is a good place to happen upon new music, but is it really a good place to discover new music? I think there could be a ton of potential for social networks like Facebook and Last.fm to incorporate Spotify.

Lots of brilliant people keep a sleep journal... as soon as you wake up write them down. A lot goes on in our minds... if only we could be aware of it. It's like we know way more than we know. Didn't Einstein have an epiphany in his sleep?

True. Good. Beautiful. : Retro is the Bee's Knees

I think that pop culture is not always revolutionary. MTV may think it is. I think it goes through phases of status-quo, copy-cat formula and swings into revolution and then that becomes the status quo. I suppose something like antithesis into synthesis. Is that Hegel? Well, as our economy and politics suggest, it's about time for another revolution... and I think people like Wendell Berry and Ron Paul are the seeds of much larger movements to come.

True. Good. Beautiful. : Worldview of the Heart

Great Goethe quote. What coffee shop were you at? I agree with you that "Humans are not confined by external circumstance." But external circumstances affect our internal circumstances... and internal definitely determines us. But the worldview of the heart is what matters, true indeed. As for your assertion that relatively few films are about inward triumph -- I completely disagree. I think any decent film focuses on inward triumph. It's called character development... going from one worldview to another.... moving from despair to hope or vice versa. Or am I missing your point? The fact that humans can choose sacrifice themselves for another's good is a powerful demonstration of freedom. But it's complicated. Don't oversimplify. People's motives are always complicated, unkown sometimes to themselves.

True. Good. Beautiful. : New Story, Old Story

Shouldn't this post be titled "New Story, Old Story, Acuatally New Story, But Really Old Story"? Or did I miss the point? Joking aside, I think it's interesting too... but each incarnation of the story is really important because it speaks with our current vocabulary and experience. There's just a ton of scripts waiting to be excellently adapted rip-offs of lots of classics. I want to do a modern Henry V. A modern Henry V would be cool. I'm sure there are plenty already. I'm going to watch Godfather tonight. Finally.

True. Good. Beautiful. : The Truth will set you free and piss you off

Man, Umberto Eco is right on. And I agree with your take on conspiracies - they simplify things. How do people imagine that there exist such coordinated, organized methods of control? A great quote from the Eco article: "We are supposed to live in a sceptical age. In fact, we live in an age of outrageous credulity. " Thanks for the link.
