KCRG : Iowa Lawmakers Tour Proposed Federal Prison, Support Project | KCRG-TV9 | Cedar Rapids, Iowa News, S

The "3,200" jobs would not be locals already in the area. Under Federal employment rules most of the correctional officers and staff will come from other Federal facilities since they will need experienced staff trained to deal with "high value detainees". Other openings for Federal officers will be based on nationwide qualified applicants(only preference is for Veterans under Federal jobs).. The other personnel( based from other news articles) will be active military personnel--they may come from anywhere. As far as suppliers, again this will be based on Federal contracting rules and local firms may or may not see Federal business. Real estate will increase in activity--but it will likely drive up housing costs(mainly rental prices)depending on availability and supply. So there may be an "influx" of employment but the vast majority of it will not be by locals in the area--especially those currently unemployed unfortunately.

GazetteOnline.com : Iowa lawmakers tour proposed federal prison, support project

The only real preference given for Federal employment is Veteran status. The local people in that area can forget about the facility jobs because they will be based on Federal correctional officer guidelines and transfer rules. Since these will be "high value detainees" the majority of officers and staff will be procured from experienced personnel at other facilities. All other positions are bid on a nationwide basis, not just local qualified people. It was also stated that military personnel will be used, these will be active duty from anywhere. Supplies to the facility will be based on Federal contracting rules which may or may not involve local suppliers. There will be an uptake in real estate(rental mainly) but the influx over tiime will necessarily drive up rental rates and maybe housing prices as well--depending on vacancies or shortages. So there may be an "influx" of new jobs but not for most of the currently unemployed locals in the area.

KCRG : Police Uncover Drug Operation in Iowa City | KCRG-TV9 | Cedar Rapids, Iowa News, Sports, and Weather

These two individuals appear to be just low level operatives of a much larger operation. Since there were no others arrested ,this is just a temporary band-aid on the flow of illegal drugs in the corridor. The article stated that the residence had been under previous surveillance. Why no other coordinated arrests of buyers and suppliers, especially their suppliers and handlers ? P.S. why was my previous comment deleted by the administrator ?It is virtually word for word except for the P.S.

The "administrator": deleted my previous comment. I used no vulgar language or innuendoes ? I may have been a little wordy and gave too many examples. I said they could have checked with all the customer service companies in the corridor including the private hospitals. Used teleconferencing or web conferences. Referenced the State's budget shortfall, Regent's mandate, the Social Security Administration's "training" party in Phoenix that was exposed by the media, and that their college education backgrounds hadn't provided them any fiscal common sense. Does this meet your approval 'administrator' ?

GazetteOnline.com : 500 transportation dept. workers to take furloughs

If you read the article correctly 3,200 non-union employees statewide(in various departments and agencies)will be furloughed. Of the 3,200, 500 are in the DOT, and the DOT has a a total of 3,100(including the 500 to be furloughed). The Governor is waiting on what the unionized employees may or may not concede in wages, benefits, or voluntary furloughs by renegotiating their contracts with the State. If their are no meaningful concessions by the various unions and their memberships, then the Governor will necessarily make mandatory layoffs. He is giving his union supporters a chance to try to forego major layoffs by giving major concessions in their contracts. You can have a great contract on paper, but if the employer(or the State)is not profitable and can't meet expenses(look at GM, Chrysler, California, etc.)it's not worth the paper it's written on. Nor is the job it was supposed to protect or enhance.

Girl Suspended for Empty Shotgun Shell at School |
 KCRG-TV9 | Cedar Rapids, Iowa N

If it had been the single empty shell given to the teacher, this action would seem absurd. But the handing out of shells to other students presents questions. Were the shells inspected by the teacher and handed out in class ? Or were the other shells handed out at school unknown to any school staff until later ? A twelve year old(or even an adult) could have inadvertently mixed a loaded shell or shells with the empty ones. All the details of this story need to be revealed before a reasonable judgement can be assessed. The writer of the story needs to attain and provide more detailed facts about the other shells that Jazmine handed out.

Hoped Iowa would 've stayed "under the radar" for awhile. Iowa has 5 games yet to go --all conference games. The games so far have all been very close. Iowa has not dominated from start to finish in any of them. Every team will be "hyped" for an "upset". Even if they "run the table' in the conference, how well has the conference fared against teams ranked in the BCS ?

Iowa escaped again thankfully ! But I think Ferentz will need to review seriously how both our offensive and defensive lines were really beaten on the scrimmage line most of the night. Iowa was most fortunate that Michigan made some critical errors that kept Iowa from being trounced. Iowa had virtually no ground game offensively and the defense was hard pressed to stop Michigan's ground assault. Their freshmen quarterbacks equaled Stanzi.

This is a large international corporation , it announced 4 acquistions in 2008 and just completed a $470 million acquisition on Oct 1, 2009. It has approximately 34,000 employees worldwide. This closure is in part due to the downturn in the economy .But mainly the closure is for tax write-offs and European Union regulations(the Oct 1 acquisition was of a German based corporation) . The Dubuque workers are simply expendable due to international and U.S. federal regulations with the corresponding tax laws and accounting schemes used for global expansion by multi-national corporations.

Hopefully the Vice President will make another notable gaffe at the dinner so aggregious to the President's policies and official position that he'll be forced to resign. Most Iowans knew he was a "loose cannon" during the primaries and that 's why he garnered minimal support among Iowa Democrats. He has been an embarrassment to the President since he was first selected as a running mate. During their first joint appearance campaigning ,he botched Obama's name three times on nationwide TV ! He has had numerous gaffes since then giving fodder to the comedians and Republicans alike. My guess is that the Democrats will go home "sick to their stomachs" after the dinner.

We hear this continual refrain that if administration and staff aren't compensated more they'll go elsewhere and we lose talent. Bonuses may be based on true beneficial outcomes during good economic times. But these same people are joining the chorus when banks and insurance companies award bonuses after receiving government bailouts. These are government funded institutions and when most Iowans have received wage cuts , wage freezes, or job losses bonuses are the last thing needed ! Nor should students be forced with tuition increases to help pay for the bonuses. It is time to end this nonsense when the state is facing such huge shortfalls in revenue !!
