About the only thing that most people need to maintain in Web.config is the machinekey. It is no longer required to keep the <system.net section up to date because we don't use it. Almost everything else is in user.config which is never touched during upgrades.
Hope that helps,
Joe

This video is part of a series that tries to show how to get started doing development of a custom feature that plugs into mojoPortal, it is not intended as a comprehensive discussion of CSS or design in mojoPortal.

Hi Eric,

Thanks! The current version and release date are right in the header so it should be easy to spot on any page of the site.
We are going to have a slide show of images where the current image is on the home page but the other slides weren't quite ready and we didn't want to wait any longer to go live with the new design. The other slides should be ready pretty soon though. I'm sure we'll be making little tweaks here and there for a while.

Best,

Joe

Sorry Rick, but this design will not be something we are shipping, I wouldn't want a bunch of sites out there that looked just like this one. The previous skin that we used on this site will be made available soon, but not the current one.
Best,
Joe

The forums would have been a better place for this discussion.

You should put customizations from the <appSettings section such as the settings for your custom editor config file into user.config then you won't have to worry about them during upgrades.

Smtp Settings also can go into user.config, we no longer use the settings from the <system.net.mailsettings section so you no longer need to maintain that. There should not be much other than the machine key that you need to restore to the new Web.config file during upgrades.

I have no plans for one click or automatic updates because I think features and upgrades to the software should be done by ftp because for security reasons we don't want the whole file system to be writable which is what would be required to automate it.

Sorry that you found it neccessary to fork the code but that was your decision and I cannot make the consequences of it easier. You are welcome to make feature requests for things that would help you avoid forking the code and they will be considered.

Best,

Joe

The repository has the latest code, if you use TortoiseHG you should have the latest code. If you're pulling the code frequently then you may have already had it since the last repository update was on Monday. You can always monotir activity in the repository here http://mojoportal.codeplex.com/SourceControl/list...

Thanks for your feedback.

cluttered and messy and bare at the same time sounds contradictory, I wonder if you could offer any specific actionable advice to make the current design better

or whether you'd like to submit a design for this site to help us out. If someone submits a design I like better I would use it and link to the designer. We could use some designer love in this community to help us make a better impression with mojoPortal. I am primarily a developer not a designer and don't expect I will ever become a great designer. I think the new design looks clean but perhaps that also translates as bare or utilitarian. I like it but I'm not married to it, if better alternatives were available to me I'd consider them. I liked the old design too but it was a free design scraped from a template site, it was time for a change because I don't really want that old design to become so much a part of the brand that I cannot change it.

We have a lot of designers out there using mojoPortal for their customers but we don't have a lot of talented designers willing to help give back to the project. We could really use some help with graphics and design and branding. It would be nice if more designers would submit designs to be the next skin for this site, and the ones not used for this site could be shipped with mojoPortal to help us make a better impression. I would love it if more designers would step up and offer help.

Best,

Joe

Not this exact one, but there is a variation on it with a different color scheme in the works by Joe Davis that will be shared once it is ready.

I've always said I am not a designer, I'm just a developer.

I wonder if I had a design/skinning contest to design a skin for this site how many people would be interested in submitting a design?

Any skin/design we use would have a link in the footer to the designer's site which is a pretty good link since this site gets a lot of traffic.

I could probably offer an iPad to the winner assuming there would be a winning design that I would decide to use for this site.

Would that be enough to get a really great designer motivated to try?
