Naked Security : How long would it take to crack your password?

I work as a DOD contractor on classified systems, and as you can imagine, we have some pretty anal password creation and changing rules. I tend to bound around with different patterns based on my mood the day I'm forced to change one. Sometimes a passphrase, sometimes a password build on a song lyric, etc. Not long ago, I used a sentence with spaces, common words and only two special characters. For grins, I altered it a little and tossed it to the analyzer: Password: This Fender Strat cost $250. The results were...interesting: 212262264052761730 centuries Total Passwords in Pattern: 643 Nonillion But what I found odd was the analyzers claim of 84% strength from "substitute Spanish". I tried to find the word "Strat" in a Spanish dictionary on line, and came up empty. The other 16% was 12% from special characters (yes, I included the period in the password), and 4% from "substitute common." I would have thought that "Word Common" would have been included in there somewhere, considering the two very common words ("this" and "cost"), but that analysis came up 0%. Too bad I can't use it now since everyone's seen it. ;-)

Big Hollywood : Dispatches from the Toilet: MTV Gives Dan Savage Sex Advice Show

I've read the guys "advice" column a few times, and I'm nearly convinced that the questions are completely fabricated from whole cloth by drunken fun-lovers who try to dream up the most ridiculous scenarios possible. If that's not the case, we have some oddball people in the world.

Big Hollywood : Steel Cage Match of the Week: Wrestler CM Punk vs. Disgraced Singer Chris Brown

Punk is one of the most entertaining guys on the current WWE roster. He's a lot more fun to watch as a face (he'll never be a "babyface" in my opinion...he's too ornery) then during his head-shaving heel days. But it's been a hoot lately watching come up against the WWE "management." Plus, as Ironhawk_86 stated, he's a great physical wrestler. He's not afraid to show a little pain when he has to. Pro wrestling is entertainment, but don't think for a moment that those guys and gals are not athletically prepared for what they have to do...sometimes multiple nights per week. Chris Brown couldn't tie the shoes of most pro wrestlers in the talent department. He especially picked on the wrong one when he challenged Punk.

Big Hollywood : Halle Berry Takes VOD Express in 'Dark Tide'

Here's an experiment: Stop 100 random men on the street and ask them if they saw "Monster's Ball." Now, segregate the men who have, and ask *them* what they remember about the plot of that movie. I'm guessing 90% will say the *only* thing they remember were the sex scenes between Berry and Thorton. Unlikely they'll remember much of the rest of the plot at all. I know I'm right about this.

Big Hollywood : Gamechanger?: How Would You Like to Cancel Your Obnoxiously Expensive Cable Service?

We have DirecTV at my home in Florida, and we really like it (at least better then the alternative, Comcast, which I believe is really Satan). But there are a LOT of channels on my system that I would dump in a New York minute given the opportunity. What I'm hoping to see is the satellite and cable companies forced by market forces to finally provide the ability to have a la carte programming choices. I don't believe for a second that the technology isn't there for them to do it right now. They simply have no financial motivation to do so. Once they begin to feel the pressure (or elimination of customer revenue from cable cutters) from alternatives like streaming, I think they'll begin to become more flexible. Might take a while, but lower revenue streams have a way of doing that.

In addition to what Rant-a-Day says below, many newer models of televisions are now network capable and include many apps that allow streaming. Samsung, for example, has an entire site devoted to apps you can download to many of their TVs and DVD players. These apps are simply interfaces to the streaming services, which provide your content over your Internet connection. The more technically savvy can now build their own media centers using a home computer and a variety of free, open-source software. But for someone like yourself, it's as simple as buying a new TV, Blue-Ray player or media streaming box. I suggest doing a Google search on Roku and Boxee and visit the D-Link website. All of these companies carry media streaming devices.

Big Hollywood : Last Night on 'Glee': Michael Jackson Glorified, Marriage Dragged Through Mud

Jenny, I fail to understand why you're wasting both your time and writing talents providing us reports on this crap program. I find it highly unlikely that most of the people who visit this site are even remotely interested in "Glee" in any way. I hate to say this (and don't take it personally), but when I see one of your reports on this show on the page, I make a *point* to skip over it completely. I understand the concept of "know thine enemy", and I consider that particular program (and its creators) the "enemy," since they go out of their way to insult and denigrate many of the values I hold dear. My daughter (now 25 and about to be married) was a drama geek in high school, but I don't recall her *ever* experiencing the kind of "issues" the characters on this show do. Maybe I'm turning into a crotchety old man, but doesn't Nolte have anything more worthwhile for you to write about? I really look forward to whatever that is.

Naked Security : Viruses and hacking, as seen on TV and in the movies

Well, these are all fine, but there is a big one you omitted. In what has to be the greatest example of infecting a system with malware, two guys fly a 50-year-old spacecraft into an alien mothership orbiting the Earth (undetected by the aliens, of course), where they connect to the alien ship's "host" system, upload a virus, causing the alien battle shields on Earth to fail, which allows the Earth's military pilots enough time to destroy the alien craft attacking the Earth. Then these same two guys (undetected, of course) fire a nuclear-tipped missile in the mothership, which inadvertently aids in their 30-second escape from the mothership seconds before the nuke blasts the aliens into another galaxy. Oh, and the virus displays a laughing skull on the alien's computer screen just before the nuke explodes. Of course, the two guys make it safely back to earth. And the virus was created and uploaded to the mothership with a 1996 Mac Powerbook. Beat that, NCIS!

Big Hollywood : Daily Call Sheet: Bronson on DVD, '24 Movie' and 'Haywire'

The solution to this is to watch "Fail-Safe." [NOTE: SPOILERS BELOW] Both films were released at around the same time, and the plots are nearly identical (Air Force bomber gets a mistaken signal to drop a nuke on the USSR). I recall reading that some people saw "Fail-Safe" after "Strangelove" and actually laughed during the former, despite the fact that it's not funny. I mention this solution because if you think the "Strangelove" message is leftist, it's got nothing on "Fail-Safe." The story is implausible, yet compelling: what would happen if a bomber crew went "rogue" and nuked a major city? And you see the mental torment of the men on the plane, as they realize that the "go" signal was probably a mistake. Yet their training forces them to act, since every effort to get them to turn back could be an enemy trick. [NOTE: SPOILERS BELOW] The boneheaded leftist solution in "Fail-Safe" is to make things equal. As today, when political correctness and "fairness" forces us to drop everything of a competitive nature, where all the kids in the school baseball league get a trophy, even if their team didn't win a single game, the President (Henry Fonda) has a solution of fairness. He tell the Soviet leader that if the American plane gets through and drops the nuke on Moscow, he will send an American plane to drop a weapon of equal size on New York, in the middle of a work day. There are all kinds of interesting plot tweaks (i.e, the wives of the President and the AF general who drops the bomb on NYC are both in the city that day, etc.), and the acting is really great. Sidney Lumet's direction is tight and filled with tension, and there's a number of classic moments in this picture that have resonated with me for decades (the sound of the melting phone when Moscow is nukes is particularly chilling). Even the peripheral casting is interesting. Walter Matthau played a Henry Kissinger-styled, hawkish Pentagon consultant who insists, once the American plane looks to get through to the target, that a full scale attack should follow. His point: the Communists are the enemy, and once they're hit with all this firepower, they'll have no choice but to surrender. Of course, the other (including all the military leaders) find this idea to be an outrage, making the President's eventual decision even more outrageous. But the message is the same, whether it's funny or dramatic. Peace good, nukes bad.

Ron Eldard has always been one of my favorite actors, a real lunch pail guy who doesn't need to chew up the scenery to get his character across. I had the great pleasure of seeing him on Broadway a number of years ago in a revival of "Death Of A Salesman" with Brian Denehey (another great one). I'm looking forward to seeing this. I'm a Long Island native, too, so I can probably identify with the story, too.

I don't know how you don't include the intro to "The Sopranos" in that list. The key to the entire show is played out in that one minute: this is a tough guy who's business and ruthlessness touch a lot of places, while he ends up at the small mansion on the hill in the Jersey suburbs. When Tony emerges from his SUV at the end of the intro, you sense that he's out of place in such a beautiful house and neighborhood.
