However, that doesn&#039;t give them the right to be above the law. They have authority over us. They ask to be put in these tough situations (otherwise they wouldn&#039;t be cops). Just because they are forced to deal with tougher situations does not mean that they get to live, and work, by a relaxed set of rules. Instead they should be held to a higher standard because of their authority. What does it say about them if they are not punished for breaking the laws they are required to enforce. The jury did not convict her of murder and the judge gave out a longer sentence than was advised. The judge&#039;s hands are largely tied on how long he can sentence her. It in fact requires the cops to stop someone who appears to be illegal. And, in fact, it gives any citizen a civil action (that means they can sue) any cop who does not stop what appears to be an immigrant and check their papers. It essentially creates a police state that will infringe on the rights of many LEGAL American Citizens. Not all people who oppose this law are progressives, I for one oppose this law and illegal immigration. But I support the right of American Citizens not to be harassed just because they look different. Instead it intrudes on the privacy and rights of all legal American Citizens who happen to appear or sound to be from a different country.
