Daily Camera.com: : Folsom Street businesses report effects of Boulder \'right-sizing\' - Boulder Daily Camera

I was sure I was the only avid cyclist in opposition to these changes. I feel that the odd traffic patterns put me at risk, and the bollards make it a PITA to pass cyclists safely. Like you, I'll take Folsom when I have to, but now prefer 30th or 19th streets. I wish I had the old Folsom back. It was near perfect for cycling as it was.

Daily Camera.com: : Doug Barakat: Wheels vs. heels - Boulder Daily Camera

After 50 passings, getting passed by a cyclist would be almost routine and hardly worth announcing? With that much volume, it seems reasonable that they might only announce when it might be dangerous, unexpected, or where additional room might be needed. Maybe yours were none of those?

Daily Camera.com: : Bicycle-on-bicycle crash on Boulder Creek Path sends 1 rider to hospital - Boulder Daily Camera

In my experience, biking the creek path west of 30th street has to be the most dangerous place to ride a bike in the city. Many fast blind corners and too many different types/speeds of traffic. And there isn't a commonly respected etiquette like keep right and pass left, so there's a ton of convergence. I imagine the number of accidents is far under-reported in this area. I usually detour to nearby bike lanes and surface streets, because mixing it up with two tons of steel often seems less risky than the chaos of some sections of this path.

Daily Camera.com: : KC Kelly: City should ban commercial businesses at airport - Boulder Daily Camera

KC is so ill-informed it's laughable. The author certainly hasn't ever talked with anyone remotely knowledgeable about the airport. Most of the planes the author is so concerned about, including the one that went down in the field recently, are actually owned and operated by a local club. It's not a commercial business and nobody's getting rich off those tows. As a pilot who recently earned his wings from a Boulder flight school, I'm glad that Boulder has such a great facility for those interested in flight. It's a real asset to our community.

It's technically a "powered glider", because it is designed to glide for parts of its mission with the motor and prop stopped. That particular model is intended to harness wind energy to fly in and near storms and other weather phenomena. A lot of kinship with your typical radio controlled plane, but also fairly different.

Daily Camera.com: : Chris Jewell: Cyclists need to be considerate on multi-use paths - Boulder Daily Camera

The problem is that if you're on the left side of the trail, we can't just "slow down". If there's no room to pass, bikes have to quickly stop (or go in reverse!) to wait for the right time to get around you. It's simply not practical, and that's why the rules are the way they are. The old dogma of walking into oncoming traffic comes from jogging on roads, not from bike paths. Different situations require different rules. On the multi-use paths, walking on the left side of the path creates a hazard. I'd argue that you can see oncoming traffic just fine from the right side of the path.

Actually, richiep is stating the proper approach on bike paths. Unless you're willing to step off the trail for all oncoming traffic, you're just getting in the way, because you're coming towards them and they HAVE to pass you, where if you're going in the same direction they can more easily slow down a bit and wait for an appropriate time. There are numerous signs on the creek path and others with the "keep right pass left" rule on them, but many people fail to pay attention.

Daily Camera.com: : Elena Holly Klaver: Protection for birds at Coot Lake - Boulder Daily Camera

I know we're all passionate about our hobbies, and probably see things colored a bit by that passion. But regarding the model airplane field, we believe we've been good stewards to the area and enjoy sharing our site with these birds. I think we both really want to help the birds succeed. As for some specific data, in the past 10 years, Harriers have nested at the model airplane site just as frequently as other areas of the reservoir that were closed completely (ie. Windsurfer's Cove). We haven't displaced these birds, they keep coming back to our site year after year. Regarding the "a couple of decades ago" comment, the model airport has been at its current location for 41 years, almost as long as the res itself (56 years). A lot has changed in this area during that time, and it's not fair to attribute all the changes you see to the model airplanes.

The irony here is that the new off leash restrictions don't apply to coyotes and foxes, which will make a tasty meal of the birds in those wetlands. If they want to protect the wetlands, they need a real solution, not political posturing.

Daily Camera.com: : Boulder begins seasonal open space closures to protect nesting raptors - Boulder Daily Camera

Can't we just leave the model airport alone? Lots of people use this site for a constructive, positive hobby, with extremely low impact on the area. I worry that if we keep trying to close this site, the community is going to lose this valuable resource. The raptors have co-existed with this site for over 35 years. In fact, they are more numerous now than ever. We need to restore some sanity to the policy regarding these resources we all pay for with our hard earned tax dollars.
