Are we to mandate through taxation that everyone makes a contribution to help those struck by tragedy? A person who has no means of caring for themselves through no fault of their own is, at the same time, a person who has no means of caring for themselves through no fault of mine. Nor is it the fault of 700 million other taxpayers. This may seem heartless, but In those situations, charity and charitable organizations are the correct avenues to deal with such situations. Should we subsidize those who have IQ's of 80, since their lack of relative intelligence is no fault of their own? Perhaps we should subsidize those with thyroid problems, since they are obese through no fault of their own? Sympathy and charity are human instincts, and should not only be encouraged but also incentivized (sp?). However, mandating charity is nothing more than taxation, with the added negative of funding a bunch of bureaucrats who dole out what is left to whomever they choose. Person A: Middle-aged man. Born poor, but paid attention in school and made good grades. Participated in sports and other extracurricular activities. Worked part-time since he was 16, initially in order to pay for an old car to drive. Accepted to a State college and put himself through by working on campus during the school terms and working back home during the Summers. After graduating, became a high-school teacher/coach. Obtained his Master's degree by attending night school and Summer classes. Decided to start up his own business after six years of teaching, and through hard work, discipline, and determination, builds his business into a very successful one by age 40. Active member of the church and coaches a little league baseball team (that his business sponsors) in his spare time. Makes $250,000 a year and is forced to pay over $70,000 a year in taxes (not including sales taxes) Person B: Middle aged woman. Born poor. Attended school and did fairly well until she became pregnant. Dropped out after birth of first child (age 17). Lives at home with her mother who is unemployed. Worked a few jobs here and there but finds out quickly that working a job around minimum wage just doesn't pay as well as unemployment, welfare, and food stamps. Has another child from a different father (neither of which are around). Believes that the Government is responsible for her situation, and should take care of her and her children. Punchline? Both Person A and Person B each get ONE vote in any election. Their opinions and beliefs are given equal validity. No matter how productive or non-productive you are, you are given an equal voice. Because we are the ONLY State that maintains the right to secession. I know it sounds crazy, but these are indeed crazy times. Can you imagine the federal response to such an event? Texas and its vital oil and natural gas reserves are critical to the U.S. We are the #1 job creating State, as well as the #1 exporter of goods. Fiscal conservative leadership has Texas in a better financial situation than any other State. Texas can make it on its own. The question is......can the U.S. make it without Texas?
