The rotor burst comment about strengthening the fuselage came directly from a Boeing source and is published in a technical piece from an aviation publication. You wish to dispute the article then as I've stated before....look it up. For having 35 years (as you claim) 'in and around aircraft' you would think you would have a grasp about why any aircraft might require strengthening after getting newly designed engines placed closer and more forward on the wing, as well as longer gear to accommodate the engines. A quick search revealed that the strengthening in the wing is needed because of the positioning of the new engines as well as the weight. Perfectly good reason, don't you think? Also, the 8" extension of the new gear requires that it also be somewhat strengthened. Make any sense to you? Lastly, the fuselage sections 43 and 44 will be strengthened because the new engines are in a different position on the wing....and in case of a rotor burst failure, Boeing is making sure that the aircraft has a measure of safety. However, millions in developing a new nose to replace a design from the early sixties may pay off in extra orders. Why? Well, I'm certain that the aerodynamics could be improved upon, thereby saving fuel....and that is a highly desirable thing from the customers point of view. And like it or not, the aesthetics of an aircraft DO matter. A new nose reminiscent of the 787 says that Boeing went the extra mile to modernize the aircraft. One thing Airbus has always done is harp on how dated the 737 is. Anyway....it was just my opinion. The trails are well marked and maps are almost always available. Sometimes accidents can occur. It's part of life. We all take our chances on a daily basis...but this was just a simple hike. I do however wonder why Boeing did not redesign the nose to look more modern like the 787. I would think they could make it a bit more aerodynamic and attractive with a new, sleek nose.
