Thanks for the posts, Bud. I\\'ve always thought that the entire idea of ownership of the land is a frivolous one that has little to do with stewardship of the earth and everything to do with power-over. What we need is a \\"power-with\\" worldview, so that the fences and barriers can be torn down physically and politically. We must open up to each other and become good neighbors, sharing our resources and renewing the biosphere. Practical ways to do that: shared gardens, shared backyards and yards, co-housing, real community-based ventures and projects.

Let us hope that the massive number of people, ideas, & dialogue generated by the pro-legalization folks makes a difference. Here's to hope :D

Thanks for commenting, Mark. I think with jury nullification, juries can literally create law by rejecting an unjust law. Jury nullification is the great hidden secret of judicial law in the USA and has great potential to reshape contemporary jurisprudence if used wisely by jurors.

Thanks for commenting, finkydink. I think that's a generalization that may be inaccurate. I know numerous elders who knew the propaganda was originally false or who have learned better through life experience that marijuana is not harmful and has many beneficial uses. As a Boomer (I'm 55 in April!), virtually every one of my friends and acquaintances is in favor of legalization.

Thanks so much for taking the time to review the post and to respond. Prohibition doesn't work and failed miserably for alcohol. Humans are partakers of mind-altering substances, the historical and scientific records are solid on this point. Let us hope that rationality and compassion prevail in this ongoing issue.

Great to see that the article resonated, Reddragon696. It does proceed that once marijuana is brought forth from an underground market with no regulation, the criminal element would start to withdraw from the heightened scrutiny. Given the incredible violence associated with the illegal activities in Mexico, this would strengthen the USA's resolve in the face of this social and political challenge, with its ensuing and needless tragedy. How about the USA actually enact smart social laws that effectively and quickly reshape these energies? I am betting President Obama and the emergent new attitudes of the federal government will orient toward liberalization, legalization, regulation, and taxation, for the sake of the American people. Mexico would be wise to act accordingly, as well, as have other South American countries. Clearly, most of the Western world is somewhat reluctantly - and belatedly - awakening to new possibilities for understanding and integrating the responsible use of marijuana.

Thanks for reading and adding to the history of marijuana prohibition, Shagata. As well, African-American musicians were known by the 'white' leaders of the 1920s-1930s to use marijuana and they didn't want legal access to marijuana to loosen up European-American women's - and their daughters' - inhibitions, which they thought would foster "'race' mixing" and which violated the racist doctrine of miscegenation. If you've not had a chance, check out the well done remake of Reefer Madness, which artistically skewers these racist beliefs. Also, Humboldt County is a recent movie which covers the Northern California marijuana farming community and culture, and does so with respect and compassion.

Jimboland Jots : California May Legalize Marijuana

Truly spoken! I agree, I am not gleefully anticipating market regulation, either. But, I am willing to compromise on that point in our initial accession strategies - but not my values, mind you - to change society's attitudes and laws regarding responsible adult use of marijuana. If California passed and enacted this law, the rest of the USA would follow, given our status bellweatherus. Maybe we might then try to actually redevelop our state with some of the tax monies from marijuana crops. Imagine all of the jobs that would suddenly become legalized and the number that would be created with the sudden emergence of an enormous underground economy.
