Breitbart.tv : Newt: 'You Can't Put A Gun Rack In A Volt!'

Newt has to change his line. Check out this video of a gun rack in a Chevy Volt: http://youtu.be/zK0ieX9mHr4 Seriously, though, I really don't get Newt's point. Does he have a problem with reducing demand while increasing production at the same time? We could be at $1.50/gallon gas within his first term if he embraced both prongs (supply and demand) to attack the problem of importing oil.

The Heritage Foundry : Rich People Win, Poor Kids Lose, in Obama's America

I'm against ALL gov't subsidies, especially federal subsidies, including school subsidies (I hope the author of this article is just trying to make a rhetorical statement by the the title of this article) . I applaud the tea-party influence that was able to remove the Ethanol subsidy. Of course, that's why where seeing gas prices rise since January 1st (the stuff you put in your car is at least 10% ethanol). Next, we need to end the $230-$380 Billion subsidy to oil companies. If we ended all such subsidies, gas prices would likely approach $6/gallon this summer, and cars like the Volt will be competitive without the crazy $7500 ($10,000) electric car subsidy. And next we could do away with the idiotic CAFE standards that just distort the auto market.

Great! I totally agree with you! You do realize that if we stopped all subsidies, summer gas prices would hit $6.00/gallon. That's fine by me, since I'm averaging 3 gallons a month with my Volt. Also, I put my money where my mouth is. I refuse to take the $7500 Volt subsidy..

Oregontea, don't look now but your ignorance is showing. The Volt can be driven as far and as fast as the law allows because it has a gasoline powered generator. I drove mine 400+ miles one weekend. 90% of the time most drivers won't use any gas in their daily driving. I'll let my experience speak for itself: 8000+ miles driven 21 gallons of gas purchased The rest of my fuel was made-in-the USA nuclear, nat gas and coal generated electricity. My previous car would have burned over 300 gallons of gas in 8000 miles, 70% of which comes from overseas, much of that from America's enemies. It's your choice who you choose to financially support. Sounds like you financially support America's enemies....

If the government wouldn't subsidize oil companies, gas would be over $5.00 gallon now. Do you agree that all of these subsidies should end? If not, your actions show that you are really a left-winger. Thankfully, tea-partier power ended the ethanol subsidy. That's adding 5-10 cents per gallon to the price of gas. Let's hope that we will end ALL energy subsidies. If that were to happen, GM would have to be running triple shifts to make enough Volts to satisfy demand.

k962: "Left wing? wrong again!" I was joking, because you act like such a left winger, but I can tell you think of yourself as right wing. You prefer sending your transportation money overseas instead of keeping jobs in the US, even sending your money to Hugo Chavez! Left Wing! You talk as if you know something about business (e.g. new powertrain launches), but in fact you are cluleless. Left Wing! re: Edsel was supposed to replace Ford's biggest selling car, like Ford's 500 replaced the Taurus. The Ford 500 sold over 100,000 units it's first full year of sales, and yet it was a sales flop. Comparing the Volt to an Edsel is comparing apples to oranges.

You know absolutely nothing about vehicle-launches. You probably would have told Toyota to put the Prius on the chopping block after it sold less than 6000 in the year 2000, it's first year of sales. There were actually MORE total car sales in 2000 than in 2011. And you think GM should put the Volt on the chopping block? You and your left-wing buddies know nothing about business.

That's the great thing about the Volt - you don't have to change a thing, so you don't have to arrange your driving pattern. Even if you drive over 40 miles between, you will reduce your gas needs substantially. For instance, on days when I drive 50 miles between charges, I only use 1/4 of a gallon of gas. Driving to my daughter's 90 miles round-tip uses just over 1 gallon of gas if I don't plug in at her house. When I do plug in I use less than half a gallon - for 90 miles of driving! The Volt can haul more than you think. It has over 5-feet of flat storage behind the front seats. When we need to haul larger pieces than my wife's Fusion or daughter's Camry can handle, we use the Volt. Sorry that you think I'm a liar, but I am a registered Republican.

The Volt has been tested well below 20 below. Check out these tests at overnight temps of 30-below: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMSqnpGLqQ4 I'll answer who I voted for: Bush and McCain in the last three elections. I actually worked for the Bush campaign during the Bush v. Gore election. Will you do the same and answer why you don't support domestic energy NOW when you could be using it for your transporation needs NOW? It's all fine and good to hope for change in the future, but that kind of thinking got us Obama.

There were federal tax rebates for the Prius, so it was supported by federal dollars. A test was recently made of a 9 -year-old Prius with over 200,000 miles, and its batteries were just as effective as the day it was sold. I expect the Volt's batteries should last just as long.

I vote for the party that wants to drill here, and I put my money where my votes are by financially supporting the Bakken oil fields here in the USA. Nobody knows what the battery replacement cost will be in 2019, but that's a cost/risk I'm willing to take in order to keep my money here in the USA. Serious question here: Will you buy the plug-in Ford Energi-CMAX (the size of a small minivan) when it comes out? Or will you continue to be anti-USA and keep buying foreign oil?

9000 sales in 14 months is better than the Prius sold in its first 14 months. I guess you think the Prius is a sales flop? The Volt is a great car.
If you read my other posts, you would know that I am heavily invested in the North Dakota Bakken oil fields. I totally agree we need to increase domestic supply. The fact is, you continue to buy foreign oil today, next week and next year. Yes, you can rant and rave all you want about taxes, but you have a choice TODAY.
Peteee, first of all they have sold over 9000 Volts so far, and the sources I have read indicate that less than 1/4th have gone to fleet purchase. I'm not a fleet owner, and it doesn't sound like ghendrick is either, so as for this message board you're talking to 100% individual owners. I LOVE my Volt. It is by far the BEST car I have ever driven, let alone owned. And I have driven some very expensive cars in my day. Nobody can call 'thestreet.com' a tool of the left. Just read what they have to say about the Volt.

Venezuelan oil doesn't just go to Citgo stations. Citgo supplies over 14,000 independent retailers with gasoline. I applaud you if you do ask your gas-station attendants to verify that they aren't one of the 14,000 recipients of Venezuelan-sourced gasoline. The same goes for Saudi sourced oil. Unless you start with the shipment manifest at any given gas station and track it back to the storage facility, then back to the refiner, and then back to the oil well you really don't know where the oil came from that makes your gasoline. Do you do all of this work every time you buy gas? If not, you're not just an idiot but an extreme hypocrite. Let me read your words back to you: "i think you need to look into the mirror... where do you think all that gasoline that you buy comes from?" And you call me an idiot? I'm sure you don't do all the work that is needed to ensure that you only buy 'good' gasoline. So, why do you continue to support regimes like Hugo Chavez's and the Saudi's? Seriously, this message board needs an answer to that question.

Also, Peteee, Why do you continue to support regimes like Hugo Chavez's and the Saudi's? Every time you put gas in your car please look at the receipt and say to yourself "I just gave 20% of my money to the Saudis and Hugo Chavez". If you're an average driver, since 9/11/01 you have donated over $4000 to both Chavez and the House of Saud. I'm coming up on one-year of Volt ownership and will have purchased less than 30 gallons of gas in that time, with absolutely no lifestyle change. My $400/annual donation to the Saudis and Chavez has dropped to less than $10. YOU have the choice TODAY to use made-in-USA energy to fuel your car or send 70% of your money overseas. Please explain why you made that choice. And that's not just a rhetorical question, I honestly want to know. If you just hate the Volt for some reason, will you buy an electric Ford Focus or Plug-in Ford Fusion or larger Plug-in Ford C-Max when they come out next year? I certainly hope so, because if you don't, then we will all know that you just want to continue supporting the Saudis and Chavez.

It's not $250K per Volt. It's more like $25 Here is a right-wing analysis (read the whole thing if you really want to know the truth): http://www.thestreet.com/print/story/11354404.htm... the subsidies are as large as they are claimed to be -- $1.5 billion -- they should be spread over 60 million cars produced over the next 25 or so years, which means they would be $25 per car -- not $250,000 as claimed. At $25 per car, there are bigger fish to fry in terms of turning America around.

Uhm, the per-car subsidies that Tesla has received are WAY MORE than the per-car Volt subsidies. I could in no way afford to buy Tesla outright, and I didn't buy my Volt outright. The quote about the Volt being faster, quieter and smoother than a Rolls Royce is not from me (follow the link in that comment for full article). Cool that you have an electric motorcycle. I bought a 250 cc shortly after 9/11 to reduce my gas usage (I get over 80 mpg), but as you say, tough to ride in the snow. We haven't had much snow in NJ, but the Volt handled the little that we had really well.

I actually agree with you that the U.S. taxpayer should not be subsidizing anything. That's the reason I didn't take the $7500 rebate. I'm glad to see that Congress recently ended the ethanol subsidy. That will cost Americans more at the pump, but it's better for everyone to pay the true price of fuel. I'm also in favor of (and I suspect you are too) of ending all of the oil, coal and energy subsidies. If we ended all of those subsidies, gas prices would be north of $5/gallon, which would help us acheive energy independence faster than these crazy Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards that are forced on automakers without any concern for the market. Electricity prices would also rise, but even if they doubled I would be paying the equivalent of $2.20/gallon to fuel my Volt with electricity. I take exception with being called greedy. I could likewise call you a traitor because you continue to send money to our enemies (i.e. Chavez and the Saudis) every time you put gas in your tank, even though you could buy an electric vehicle and stop sending money to our enemies.
