Before Sam’s lecture on immigration, my opinion on illegal immigration was not much at all. Seeing how my parents used to be illegal immigrant, and most of my family in the United States are, or were illegal immigrants; I wanted the people of the United States to be a little more lenient on the laws of immigration. My parents are very hard working people and deserve to be in this country just as much as anyone who was born here. As Sam mentioned in class, it tends to be the people with the most drive and work ethic that migrate from their countries to another. My parents are no average Joes. My dad had a master’s degree in Computer Science before he came to the United States. Although he is a citizen now, his credentials from Ghana (where I am from), do not hold nor do they matter anymore in the United States of America. Before Tuesday’s lecture I guess I felt that Immigrants typically have a hard time finding jobs that pay them well, and gave up a lot to come here, so they should be allowed to stay hassle free because life is hard enough for them as it is.
After the lecture, I suppose I became somewhat upset at a certain population of the American people, and their attitudes towards illegal immigrants. As Sam keep mentioning time and time and time again, this land that we Americans call our own is, RED LAND. Meaning this land does not belong to us. This land and everything is stands for and represents, was built on the blood of the indigenous people. Since that is the case, all of us residing here in the United States, should be considered illegal immigrants as well. We should all be deported. We should all lose our “rights”. We should all have to work at below minimum wage. When Sam mentioned this I am sure that everyone in the room, opened their ignorant eyes just a tad and realized that maybe we been given the immigrants in this country too hard a time. The United States of America is a land entire built on the principles of free will and opportunities. If someone decides to enter this country in hopes to better themselves they should be allowed without any restraints by the American people to exercise that free will and make the best of themselves. None of the people that reside in this country are originally from here. So I would not be so quick to point the finger at the immigrants that are just arriving after we have settled. Because every time we point a figure at them, the indigenous people of this land are pointing right back at us.

To answer your question on whether or not I actively choose to benefit from nepotism would be a no. As Sam mentioned, just about everyone in society has benefited from nepotism in one way or the other. Whether it be be from, family members, your wife, your husband, you friends, or even you colleagues; everyone is or has benefited from nepotism as some point in their lives. Nepotism is to give someone a gift, a “one up”, or an advantage to someone who is undeserving of it. No one deserves to be where they are in socially, and economically, if that’s the the case. So would I willingly give up nepotism no I would not.
If I willingly gave up nepotism, meaning; I chose not to accept help when it was offered to me, I would spend majority of my life trying to catch up to society. Dare I say it would be nearly impossible for me to function in life or make anything substantial of myself if I lived that way? Yes it would be extremely impossible. Maybe the only that nepotism would work is everyone was willing to admit where that they would not be where they are today if not for nepotism, quit their jobs they received through nepotism, pay full price for their favorite car, and be willing to start all over in life without anyone’s help.
Sam mentioned that succeeding in life is really based on one thing, and that one thing is, NETWORKING. Networking or nepotism as as I like to refer to is now is how most people get ahead in today’s society. It is not how much you know, but sadly who you know. That is how you get ahead in life. Do not get me wrong, what you know does play a very small role; meaning what you know will determine how easily networking or nepotism can work for you. But at the end of the day it it always comes back down to who you know. Nepotism will give you the more opportunities to display what you know, to the people who are lending you the helping hand.
Certain things in this world cannot be changed on a whim. I love the example that Sam opened up the class with. He asked us: if we could do one thing to change the world what would it be? Everyone’s answer consisted of taking from someone and and giving it to another. They simply are not enough resources in this world to satisfy everybody. This mean that those who have the resources will only share with those who are closes with them, and those who they shared with will intern do the same. No one can get ahead in life without nepotism, unless we build an entirely new society where nepotism is against the law. “Maybe” then and only then could I choose to actively decline nepotism if it was offered to me.

After the lecture we had in class, my ideas and views how been changed in regards to terrorism. As Sam said, we should give terrorist the responsibility for their past transgressions, or whether or not the invaders should share in the responsibility for invading their culture and way of life. I do understand where the terrorist are coming from I really do. My only problem is that they chose to blame everyone in the United States of America, for their problems. Maybe if they had targeted the people that were specifically responsible (Christians), then maybe some of the blame could alleviate from them. With that being said, I complete hold the terrorist responsible for their heinous crimes against the innocent people of the United States of America, and other areas that were affected by their actions. I am aware that we as America are not completely blame free, Sam said that maybe if people in the United States were a bit more open to the Islamic religion, then maybe they not be entirely so hateful toward the people of the United States. There are many cases and examples that Sam gives to help paint this picture. An example would be when an American General referred to Islam, a pretentious, fake religion, following a god that does not exist. Ignorant statements like these are what paint the negative picture of the American people.. Still there is no comparison between that and aiming to destroy, kill and eradicate anyone who does not obey, follow, and practice the Islamic religion.
Sam showed a few pictures in class of Muslims holding up very hateful picket signs. Some of these signs said things like behead those who are against the Islamic religion. Very rarely do I see pictures of the same connotation being held up by Christians against people of the Islamic religion. I never have seen a Christian or heard a sermon in which a leader of a Christian sect was asking the members to kill anyone who was not of the Christian religion. Terrorist are very sick people who believe the only way to make things right with the world is to destroy everyone and anyone who are unlike them. Sometimes they sacrifice themselves in the process. But these terrorist are a small group of radicals and do not represent the entire Islamic religion as a whole. Just like the radicals of Islam should not aim to kill all people in America, we should not aim to dislike and hate anyone who is Muslim. After everything that I have just said, no one should every aim to eradicate another group. Everyone should accept the fact that everyone believes very strongly in their views goals and morality, and that every individual believes that they are more justified in the things they do than others. If people just accept this and let each other be, then it would solves a whole lot of problems.

If we lived in a female centered would sex would be an entirely new ball game all together. As Sam and his wife Lorie mentioned in class, most of the world views sex as strictly penetration. A man penetrating a woman to the point where they both receive an orgasm. When you watch porn you we come to realize and notice the 90 percent of the sex scenes, a rough, tough, hard, border line rape scenes. Penetration:an attack that penetrates into enemy territory. This is one of the first definitions that came up when I looked up the word penetration. Penetration is not at all a soft word, it is forceful and majority of the time an attack on the vagina. Seeing as how most of the world views things through the eyes of a man, and most people see sex as penetration; its no wonder why sex is describe by worlds such as bang, smash, wreck, beat, ram, tear it up and etc. I believe that there a lot of different words, probably antonyms to describe sex in a female centered world.
For women orgasm are usually achieved my mental and physical stimulation. Notice how I did not say penetration. Most female receive their orgasms through, a romantic atmosphere, pleasant, comfortable surroundings, a partner who they really like, a feeling of being wanted and appreciated, a good flow of natural lubrication so that the delicate female parts don't get sore, and a skilled partner who knows how to stimulate the clitoris. These are just a few of the things I have read about that stimulate an orgasm for females. None of the words I mentioned have to do with ram, smash, and penetration. Females I guess would prefer a more sensual partner than a sexual partner. The clitoris can not be stimulated only through penetration. It needs to be kissed, caressed, and “gently” rubbed. Sex to a female is completely different from what males think it to be. Make sure that everything is comfortable and nice for her. Which is strange because most men view sex as more of a painful kind of pleasure for the female. Give her lots of kisses and cuddles before you even think about making any approach to her sexual area. Things like kisses and cuddles are things most men believe get a woman for sleeping, and not wanting sex, but their wrong, being nice does pay off.
Romantic, beautiful, compassionate, gentle, smooth, tender, slow, soft, comfortable, soothing, delicate, caressing. These are the words I believe would describe sex in a female centered world, women are very opposite from us in a lot of ways. Essential what ever way you describe sex as a heterosexual male, change it and try to do the exact opposite, I am sure you partner will appreciate you a whole lot more.

Privilege: the principle or condition of enjoying special rights or immunities, a right, immunity, or benefit enjoyed only by a person beyond the advantages of most . This is white privilege in a nutshell. White people are enjoying special benefits in the world we live in today, just because of there skin color. Not because they are smarter, faster, taller, or better looking than colored people, but ONLY because they are white. I can see how people of color who live in the “United” States would be furious, and upset about this. This country was supposedly built on honesty, integrity and most importantly Equality, but everyday colored people are excluded from the equality part. White privilege is something that people of all colors and races should be entitled to but more often than not, aren't.
As an African American male, I personally have not had any experience with white privilege, simply because, I am not white. I could never understand what it is like to walk in the “White Man's” shoes. But as a colored individual white privilege has effected me in a lot of ways. As Sam said in class the other day, there was a control study where a black male and a white male applied for the same job. They had identical resumes, identical personalities, same speech patterns and mannerisms. The only difference was their skin color. If I remember correctly I believe the result was 3 out 8 of the black males got the job meaning the employers preferred the white males of the darker males. In another similar study, a black male and a white male applied for the same job. They had identical resumes, identical personalities, same speech patterns and mannerisms. The only differences were their skin color and the criminal records. Shockingly the white male with the criminal background was still more preferred by the employer over the black male with the criminal record.
The study that was explains everything that white privilege is. White people get to reap the benefits of this everyday. They get better jobs, and better salaries. And people of color wonder why the average income for whites and colored people is so skewed. The problem with white privilege is that white people are completely oblivious to it, they are unaware of the benefits it brings them and how it affects the lives of the people around them. All they need is a little awareness help level the playing field. Maybe as time advances and we continue to educate the masses on matter then things will get a bit better for colored people like myself. It is sad to know that no matter how hard I work in life, it still is and will always be the white mans world.

Black is evil, white is good. Since child birth this is what we have been taught. From star wars we learn that the dark side is evil. Black and dark have always been used to describe something wrong and ominous. The black plague was a disease that wiped out populations in the medieval times. Society has always associated dark or black with negative, so much so that in our day to day lives we take this association to the people we encounter daily lives. Barrack Obama would not be the president of the united states of America if he were about three shades darker. One of the most influential men in the history of life is Jesus Christ. as Sam said in class Jesus is supposed to be a dark skinned middle eastern man. Jesus is said by Christians to be the embodiment of all things good. As a result the world chooses to make him a white paled skinned man. This is because we are brainwashed and are incapable of associating all things good with anything else but light and or white.
Beauty is typically defined by white. A beautiful woman is usually a blonde headed woman. Studies have been done that shows beautiful woman will almost always get hired in the workplace over a less than desirable woman. Since beauty is mostly defined by lighter and white skin, white skin gives you the advantage in the workplace. In class I remember Sam showing as statistics on a control study where a black male and a white male applied for the same job.
So do I think that your lighter skin gets you ahead in society? Without a shadow of a doubt. If the world did not believe that were true these cosmetics companies would not be making millions of dollars in profit from skin lighting products. We believe it and they sell it to us. The interesting thing part about this light skin craze is that, people of other races do it to each other. What I mean is that, colored people prefer lighter colored people. Asians prefer to lighter, the Chinese and Indians are notorious for this. Black people do it to, lighter skinned African Americans discriminate and prefer lighter African Americans to the darker ones. The lighter your skin is the further you will get, but you will never get a far as the white man.

15 years ago @ World In Conversation - Do You Think Race Can ... · 0 replies · +1 points

I wish I could completely say that race will cease to be an issue in the future, but the longer I am in Sam's class the more I realize that it is very unlikely to happen. The real problem is not race, but the fact that people like to identify themselves and identify others. As the human race I is the way that we are wired, if we were not that way we'd all just be a zebras. Actually as a matter of fact we are all just like zebras, because as Sam said in class; 99.99 percent of the human genome is completely identical, the .01 percent of difference is what distinguishes us in terms of our appearance. So in a sense we are all a bunch of zebras discriminating against each other on whether we are a white with black stripes or black with white stripes. To try and differentiate our selves from everything and everyone else.
The easiest way to identity and classify something, is to do it based on how different it looks compared to other things. Since the beginning of time human being have been calling and naming things based on what the look and feel like. Here are a couple of examples: Little Rock, Arkansas. Little Rock derives its name from a small rock formation on the south bank of the Arkansas River called la Petite Roche (French: "the little rock"). Grand Canyon, is a canyon that is named because it a freaking huge canyon. The point that I am trying to make is that we classify inanimate objects by what the look like and that is not much further from the truth for human beings. Because of this innate need to classify things by the way we see them race will always be an issue. This is why when I see some one with dark skin I call them black, and when I see someone with “pinkishpeach” skin I call them white. This is not because I am racist, but since I was a child classify things by sight and sound. I call things as I see them and so does everyone else.
It would be very unrealistic to think that race would dissipate in the future. In order for that to happen, every time I met someone, I would have to go up to them before forming an opinion in my head and ask them what race they were. To think that is a likely thing is very impossible. The only way that race might stop being an issue is if, we keep interbreeding with each other. Meaning we all keep having sex with people of different races until were all just one giant jumbled mutt of a human race. Then people might find it a little bit harder to make distinguishable differences from each other. Even then I am sure there are some people who would not be able to help it. Just like how must people think mandarin Chinese and Cantonese Chinese people look alike, except for Mandarin and Cantonese Chinese people. In the end people will always try to classify themselves apart from others, because they can not help it, so unless we kill the entire human race and instill a new innate way of classifying and identifying people, race will always be an issue.

15 years ago @ World In Conversation - What is the Difference... · 0 replies · +1 points

“What is the difference between a colored and white comedian?” Well is it not obvious that colored comedians a just plain funnier. I am kidding of course. I am very glad that someone else has noticed this comedic injustice. But I think this issue goes above and far beyond comedy. It seems that people of color have this get out of jail free card as it pertains to being politically incorrect and offending other races. Black people fought for the right to not allow other races to use the word “Nigga”. But I have noticed that basically anyone can say the work “Nigga” if their white or Asian. I hear Hispanics say it all the time to black guys and I hear black people saying it back to them.

Colored comedians do have a way of getting to say whatever they want without offending anybody. I think the reason is that people tell jokes according to the demographics of the audience. A colored person would never perform an all-white show, and make fun of white people the entire time. Instead he would go to an all-white show and make fun of colored people. You make fun of who you are. Jeff Foxworthy is a redneck and he makes fun of red necks. Kat Williams is a black pimp, and he makes fun of black pimps. White comedians should just stick to their demographic. You cannot make fun of something that you are not or do not fully understand.

The reason that colored people are able to make racial jokes towards each other is because they share something in common. That something is that they all live in a world that is controlled and predominantly owned by the “White Man”. The truth is that we live in a white world. America is white, majority of the people who live in the United State of America (totally did that for the word count) are white. What people seem to not understand is those of colored cover every single race that isn’t white. So if I am an Asian immigrant and I want to make fun of Hispanic immigrants then I can. And the two reasons I can is because 1. We are both ‘colored’ and 2. We are both immigrants. So Jeff fox worthy can’t got to a dominantly Muslim crowed and tell jokes about how Muslims like to bomb everything, because he as nothing in common with the people that he is telling his jokes to. There needs to be common ground for the jokes to sell.

It is not that white people aren’t funny; it is not that people view them as being racist when they tell jokes; I think it is because majority of the world believes that every social injustice that has happened to different races across the world is because of white people. As a result of this colored people and white people do not feel that it is “politically correct” to mock and make fun of other races. I hope that answers you question.

Also stereotypes make people feel as though they are in control. Stereotypes are a way for people to live inside the boundaries that they have created for themselves. It seems like the greatest excuse to pretend you know someone. It has been around for decade. As human a first instinct when we see something, is to identify and quantify. We do it automatically without even knowing. It makes us feel safer. Life just makes more sense when you group things. That how we learn it is an innate action that we have. Summer= hot, winter= cold, Africa = hot, Indians = Smell, = Tall Black Guys = basketball. You see how easy it is to make the transition from everyday things and places into stereo types.
In conclusion, I believe stereotypes will always exist because it’s impossible to totally eliminate them. Children will always be influenced by their parents and the media will always have the large influence on society that it has now. The media’s influence might even grow more in the future. Also stereotypes will always be somewhat true so there’s no way of totally eliminating them. Some people will believe these stereotypes no matter what. This is because they will always be somewhat true. How in the world do you think that stereotypes came to be in the first place? I could not have said it better (488 if you count my other one)
