Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Zach Galifianakis gets two ferned. Awkward. Awesome. Video.

I love Between Two Ferns, and although it's hard to pick a favorite, I think Bruce Willis is the one. It's either his interview or Steve Carrell's.

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Distancing ourselves from the word “religion.”

I can honestly say that I have never used that phrase. I agreed with the idea that it's not a set of rules, but a relationship with an awesome God that loves me. I did not like the petty word play, though. I have always been particular about phrases and over analyze them. I felt like saying, "It's not a religion, it's a relationship," was the same as saying, "Hey, that's not a dog, it's my best friend." They're not really mutually exclusive. It's still a religion, just as much as your best friend (or "child" for your church directory picture) can still be a dog.

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Trying to explain to men why you love Beth Moore so much.

My wife hasn't read this yet. When she sees in the title that it's about why women love Beth Moore, she will decide not to read it. Sarah doesn't get why everyone loves Beth Moore any more than I do. And I commonly resort to using initials of famous people, because i am lazy, and you'll know who I'm talking about when it's in context. BM doesn't work, though.

For me, it's either you or Matthew Paul Turner. If you want me to read your book, you either need to have fun with Christian traditions or have Jack Reacher killing somebody. I see too much parallel in most books on spirituality and Christian leadership to want to read more than one in the next ten years.

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Icelandic Volcano Christian References

I would like to see Magnus Ver Magnusson stop the volcano. Can Sylvester Stallone work up a script for this? Being a famous Christian author, you have to have connections to Sly. Put a bug in his ear. "In a world under judgment by God, only one man can stop the volcanoes. Who will win this battle of Armageddon? Will the world really end, buried under lava and ash? Or will Magnus Ver Awesomeson, played by Magnus Ver Magnusson, defeat the volcano and prove once again that he is the world's strongest man?" Rated R for intense scenes of suspense and tribulation.

I know this is bad, and it may be heightened by a horrible experience I had in 8th grade, but I hate Christian t-shirts. They're all over the place at Christian shows, especially on youth pastors. Not this youth pastor. Maybe if I hadn't been made fun of for my knock off Christian No Fear shirt when I was younger, I wouldn't be so against them. And my favorite band of all time is Disciple. I've seen them a lot. My wife loves them. Even my baby loves them.

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Bragging about being clueless about pop culture.

What is pop culture? I've never even heard of it. I feel made fun of today. As soon as I started reading the post, I realized it was talking about me. At least it's not me today, but it was just a short couple of years ago. I was so lame. But I laugh and make fun of me for it now, and I think others should, too.

I scored 110, which seems like a decent score. If you add in the full year I ran a YG for free in FL until the church could afford to hire me on, I score 210. I wasn't sure if pasts counted, though.

LeadingSmart : Beer and Bible

Nope, I wasn't talking about you, Mark. Sorry if you thought I was. I didn't read through all of the comments. I have no problem with differing opinions. Some people just don't do a good job of having a different opinion while showing respect those they oppose. Shoot, I'm like that sometimes. My parents know and love Charles. We don't agree on this, but that doesn't mean we don't respect one another, and they certainly haven't lost respect for Charles. My dad and I had a long debate yesterday back and forth about our positions, and we did so respectfully. I was merely pointing out, without having read the comments, that insults are inevitable, and these guys don't really care. And I totally respect them for it. If someone doesn't like when I do what God has told me to do, I hope to have the same courage to not care.

LeadingSmart : Beer and Bible

This ministry is in a bar for people who drink beer. They're not cramming beer down people's throats. They're talking about Jesus with people who would be drinking otherwise. It's a fairly big stretch to assume that this ministry will create drunks that destroy their families, anyway. Sure, those people exist - my grandfather was one of them - but what would have happened if my grandfather was confronted with the knowledge and love of Jesus when he was at the bar? Maybe I would have had the chance to meet him. Who knows? I know he was never confronted with those things at church, though, because he would never set foot in a church.

LeadingSmart : Beer and Bible

I'm proud of this team. They are my friends, and this effort makes me more proud to be their friends than ever. Here's what I know about the people on this team: they want to reach people for Christ by all means short of sinning. In that, they remind me of Jesus. Jesus went to the what the religious people would deem the worst places with the worst people, because He didn't care what was said of Him. He only wanted to reach people. So this thread and others like it will exist where some people, in the name of God, will rip them apart. But someone's bound to get saved from their efforts, and at the end of the day, that will matter more to them. Planting a church in Utah is like building an ark. It doesn't make sense, but when God tells you to do it, you do it the way He tells you to do it. You graciously put up with the naysayers, no matter how vitriol they may get,. You just keep doing what God told you to do. At the end of the day, your family will be blessed, and humanity can find redemption through your obedience. Maybe Beer and Bible pisses you off. That's okay. But are you big enough to pray that God will use Charles, Mikey, Patrick, and the rest of the Mission West team, regardless of your personal feelings?

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Throwing up.

That was an interesting post, especially today, since I'm home sick throwing up. I nearly took a break during the trash bag scene, but I made it through. This is my favorite line, and it will probably become a staple in my teaching: “I wish I treated sin like my body treats puke.”
