no matter where you live, i really don't think it's safe to assume that *any* neighborhood is especially safe any more. the criminals have gotten more aggressive and many will go to the so-called 'safe' neighborhoods simply because people *have* gotten complacent so it makes easy hunting grounds for the predators

I feel for the victim, but why would anyone living in an urban area, especially a ground floor apartment, be crazy enough to leave their doors unlocked?

hoping that a lesson is learned by other potential victims here

having lived in that part of town i will say that actually you do see a fair number of really fancy cars along with all the beaters that the honest people drive. the gang bangers and dealers always seem to be able to come up with the money (or at least the down payments) for the really expensive rides and plenty og them live/hang in that area of town

i'm guessing there's a little more to the story and that the victim probably has a pretty good idea as to who shot him. there seem to be a lot of complaints of violence down there, but when it comes down to actually identifying the perps, everyone gets really close-mouthed really fast. it may be legitimate--they could be afraid for their and their families' personal safety, but if they're going to demand that the police do something, then they need to start talking

it's been on the news for ages--how could people have missed it?

i've always disliked the plastic bags because they were always so flimsy i could never feel comfortable lugging my groceries up two flights of stairs unless i'd gotten paper or was using my own bags.

what i'm really going to miss is the bag credits--up to five cents a bag--that some of my favorite stores would give customers for using our own bags!

firing is too good for that 'caretaker'

i hope that laws and consequences regarding the abuse/neglect/mistreatment of ALL vulnerable populations (children, mentally and physically handicapped, etc) are strong enough to give this abuser an appropriate punishment

and i agree with Table9 and whokebe that the employers should be carefully looked at as well--sounds as though the home was a serious hazard and can't have gotten that way in the course of a single shift.

having been a caretaker for disabled adults, i realize that this is some of the most poorly paid and unappreciated work, but if you accept a job in this environment, then you need to be committed to the population you are caring for; if you really hate it that much, then get a job flipping burgers.

though the article doesn't mention it, the investigation was initiated by VA employees who were concerned about the fraud--not some outside agency checking up, but VA staff who care that money for veterans' care was being wasted

i'm glad to see someone being prosecuted for this--there is a lot of fraud surrounding the travel pay at the VA and it only hurts the honest veterans when someone is filing a false claim for travel.

most of the employees at the VA are honest hardworking people who want to see their fellow (in many cases--a good third of VA employees are veterans) veterans get the health care they need and deserve. it's sad that a couple of creeps like these two are giving everyone else a bad name.

prosecute them and demand full restitution!

good on the man for doing what it took to protect his daughter

and he was even decent enough to call 911 on the beast who had attacked his daughter knowing that he could be up for assualt/murder charges. there aren't many who would have even bothered to care whether the scumbag lived or died

that young man's little girl will be rightfully very very proud of her daddy once she's old enough to fully realize what a fine and honorable man he is

Mr Sendak touched countless lives with his wonderful illustrations and books.

In addition to the classic 'Where the Wild Things Are,' he also authored a large number of 'Golden' books featuring an adorable character named Little Monster and his family and friends. I bought them for my daughter and spent countless hours enjoying the funny but honest story lines and detail-rich illustrations

the man may be gone, but his work will live on as long as there are children to enjoy good books
