Race Relations Project : What about health care?

Yes health care should be for everyone even immigrants, because I believe that if someone is sick and they need health care they should be taken care of. I feel that there could be limitations put on the amount of “free” healthcare that they receive but they should be able to receive it. Also because if you deny health care to immigrants then you would be denying it to the poor because most illegal immigrants are poor or close to poverty, also we let them in our country when we need them so shouldn’t we at least make sure they are healthy?

Race Relations Project : What about people who can only "afford hard work"?

Hard work should be rewarded, but it’s sad that immigrants work so hard and don’t get rewarded, plus like everyone else said immigrants do the jobs that American’s don’t want and have no desire to do. Most of the time they get paid less then minimum wage and have no benefits and can’t really get any. Also for the people who say that they are taking government money with all the programs, they are illegal immigrants so they can’t get the programs. So I feel that if you really want to stop the immigrants from taking the jobs that “all American’s want” then go after the companies that hire them

Race Relations Project : South Park...off the hook?

Any one who watches South Park or any show that is somewhat like South Park know that they try and push buttons, and get people raddled. The show is full of derogatory phrases, stereotypes and mockery of all cultures. The authors of the show purposely make fun of all cultures and things that are happening in the media. They want to bring attention to situations and to the politics that are happening in today’s time. I feel that the people that who made the controversy over the South Park episode were ignorant to what South Park is and how the show makes fun of every religion. When I was younger my mother always said that she disliked South Park but she never actually sat down and watched a full complete episode of the show. After viewing a show her opinion of the show changed a bit, yeah she doesn’t watch the show but she did say that they put satire on political problems and bring situations to light in a comedic manner. So Maybe the people who through the show was offensive just didn’t understand that the show is just for fun but is political and the writers do this for a reason. Also their has been controversy over this show for so many years, because of how it talks and brings to light taboo conversations and practices of many religions, races, cultures. The show attacks everyone in every realm so if you disagree with what the show is saying then don’t watch it. Also the show is protected by the first amendment, they can say what they want and create their own opinions. Also, a lot of the stuff that they say on the show is true they just portray it in a different way, through vulgar children that speak everything that comes to their minds. The thing that I find most interesting about the fact that these people got upset about South Park is the fact that there are so many news channels that do the same thing but in a different way. How the media brings light to certain situations and creates a bias opinion about all the same political matters. One main thing that interests me is the fact that this one episode can make such in impact on public opinion. South Park has so much controversy surrounding it and how it reaches such a large crowd and actually gets people to think about political situations in a different way. It also brings otherwise non-existent conversations to light and makes people examine the situation. The show is great in how it does that for all cultures, and powerful in the same way. It’s just sad that people make such issues about the show before they actually watch it or understand what the writers are trying to achieve.

Race Relations Project : The tyranny of radical Muslims...

I feel that when people think about Muslim’s they group them into one single category; which is the radical one and they believe that they all believe in and follow Osama Bin Laden. It’s sad that it has to be this way because there are plenty of Muslim’s that are peaceful and are against the war and against all of the beliefs of Bin Laden. But Americans can’t seem to get past all the media representations of these radical Muslim’s killing American soldiers with guns. In my own personal experience it took me actually working with Muslim’s to realize that there are plenty of peaceful Muslims who are against the war and Osama Bin Laden.

Race Relations Project : Creating Terrorists

When I think about the fact that she was avenging her husband’s death, I guess it lightens the fact that she is a suicide bomber because if her husband hadn’t been killed she would not have done this otherwise. I never actually thought about it suicide bombers in this way, I guess I just thought they were crazy patriotic people doing this for their country but I feel that if someone in my family was killed then I would want revenge also but I don’t think I would go as far as to kill myself to kill others. There may have been other ways that she could’ve avenged her husbands death.

Race Relations Project : Women

I feel that women try to live up to these certain standards that society sets for beauty. In Hollywood there are women of all different shapes and sizes but they all have many similar features. For African American women most of them have European features such as the long hair and many times lighter skin. For a lot of white women their hair color is altered and they are super skinny because that’s what society has decided is considered beautiful. Although all women are beautiful in their own unique way there is a society standard that many women try to live up to. The standard that the mass media has created from television to print media the look of the women is the similar. To answer the question what it is to be a women is interesting to me because besides all the physical features women all have the same makeup. So the answer to that question would have to be answered individually and by all different types of women because I feel that every woman will answer that question different. To elaborate on the topic of what it is to be women, I wanted to bring light to the mini play that was performed in class on Tuesday. It was interesting to watch because it brought a lot of the issues that girls struggle with to light. The one girl wanted to be liked by guys and to have smaller breasts because that’s what she thought would be sexually desired if she changed her appearance. Many women go through this thought process and believe that if they change this or that and dress this way that they will get more attention. Many girls cannot accept their bodies and appearance the way it is, they want something changed or feel that they are never good enough. I know that this happens because in my own experience I have wanted to change things about myself because I wasn’t happy with it or wanted to look better in an outfit or look a certain way. Also my friends do this same thing, I have been around them numerous times when they say “ I want to lose weight” or “ I hate the way my body looks” and I also have friends that idealize celebrities and want to look like them so they change their hair or dress a certain way to create this look. So I feel that the play was extremely cleaver in the way it was portrayed and how it showed the inner struggles that girls go through on an everyday basis. I could imagine that every girl in that room on Tuesday has said one in their life that they disliked something about themselves or their appearance, or even their body.

Race Relations Project : What are all of you thinking about Asians?

This is interesting to think about because it seems that Asians are always underrepresented in all realms. Also its not always Asians that are forgotten there are other races that aren’t thought about when talking. Also what about the fact that when people say that they are mixed they always think in black and white, they never think about all the other ways that a person would be mixed. I feel that since the major race issue is between blacks and whites that all other people seem to be forgotten. So for Asians and other races they don’t have the issues that blacks and whites have with each other and there is still so much hate that exists today.

Race Relations Project : If men could menstruate...

When you try and talk about your menstrual to men they automatically just stop you and say that they don’t want to hear it or its nasty. But it’s natural for women to menstruate like so many other things that humans do. I feel that most men aren’t mature enough to have a conversation about women’s body and how it works if it doesn’t pertain to them. But that’s not to say that there aren’t those men that will have a conversation about a women’s menstrual. For some reason its taboo like talking about how much people make on the job.

Race Relations Project : Those Dolls Say Alot About Who We Are

A girl like me video didn’t really surprise me, but it was sad to see. The reason it didn’t surprise me is because I am black and dark skinned. I think when I was younger I may have chosen the black doll just because my mother made sure that I played with black dolls. I can remember when I was younger having many dolls white and black and always favoring the black dolls, but my close friend always chose to play with the white dolls. The video was sad to see because these young girls are color struck and believe that the dolls that are black are bad or ugly. Also, its not surprising to me that the girls picked the white dolls because in the black community lighter skin is assumed to be better, those with lighter skin are more accepted and seen as better then girls with darker skin. I have had experiences like this myself, I have had people say things to me like” you sure are pretty for a dark skin girl” just like the other girl in class. Also within the African American community there are people who say that they don’t date or even socialize with people who are not light-skinned. Also when I was growing up, I can remember a time when me and my friends were creating profiles on some social network and my friend described herself as light-skinned with long hair. She wanted to look like that because that’s what is acceptable in the black community and what is looked up to. Another thing that was mentioned in the video was about natural hair and how its not accepted in the African American community. I feel that when people where their hair naturally people do criticize them about how they look. Saying things like they look grungy or like they belong in Africa because they choose to where their hair a certain way. There are so many women in the African American community that don’t were their hair natural, they get perms and get their hair pressed out so that it can be straight. They want to look more European, so they straighten their hair and do things to make their skin lighter. The video just shows how those young girls are taught to think, not by their parents but by the media and just the people that surround them. Like how in most stores you see African American models with straight hair, and you rarely see dark models on television or in mainstream media. But I feel that a lot of the feeling in the black community that say that people with lighter skin are better is from the days of slavery, when the slaves with the lighter skin worked in the houses and the slaves with the darker skinned worked the fields. So I feel that the thought process that lighter blacks is better is just something was planted in us from years ago.

Race Relations Project : Prom or No Prom: Just Don't Let the Queer Students Dance Together

This is really interesting to me because in my high school there were a few lesbian couples and they went on the prom together and one girl dressed in a tuxedo. Also that for my junior prom I went with my best friend who is a girl although we were both dressed in dresses, it was a same sex date. I feel that America is trying to change and that most of the students in the school probably wouldn't have cared if she had went on prom with her girlfriend, but for the school to cancel the prom is crazy. It’s unfair for the girl and for her classmates. I think this is crazy especially since America is trying to accept gay rights and to just outright tell this girl that she can’t go on the prom, it just shows that the south isn’t trying to accept gay rights.

I think it matters a lot because the main fact that she is a woman in a male dominated sport and world. When I think about football, I think about guys and how this is considered a hand’s on hard sport. You never think about a women taking tackles and playing side by side with guys. Also, you never see female coaches, players, referees or anything that is associated with the game of football. I also think that it is a great accomplishment for her because she is a woman and that she played football and gets to coach a football team, she has crossed over into a male sport and showed that women can do it too.

Race Relations Project : Does this rudeness thing cut both ways?

In response to the question does rudeness stream both ways; I would have to say yes. Some of the comments that were made on the live feed were rude from people of color and from white people. I think the reason for the uproar from the people of color about what the white people were saying comes from the fact that it’s not acceptable for whites to say such things in public and it just builds on stereotypes that are common for people of color. Also that some of the comments that the people of color were saying about white people were mild to what whites were saying about people of color. And there leaves the fact that the people who put those comments on the feed more than likely wouldn’t say those things to someone of color in person and that goes both ways. Most people of color wouldn’t purposely offend some white person or say such things to their face. It’s just that the feed is completely anonymous and people can say what they really feel without others knowing their inner thoughts. I think the reason that blacks “gasped” when they heard loud and obnoxious is because not all blacks are like that and that this is considered a stereotypical character trait for all black women. In almost all forms of media there is that loud black women who is considered ghetto. There are so many whites that believe that most black women will have this trait and that’s what they look for in almost all black women. As you said when it was colored people turn to write about how they perceived white people they said things like bench-warmers and can’t dance. I believe that there is a difference in the responses because many people of color know that there are some great white athletes and dancers, and that those are not character traits. I agree that one of reasons that blacks would get hyped up about what people said on the feed is because of the oppression during slavery. But I don’t agree that blacks do this for attention because everyone is different and everyone will take things differently where some blacks will takes things more heavily than other blacks. Also you must keep in mind that many blacks take offense to these situations because whites don’t talk about race issues often and when they do they tend to express their thoughts through stereotypes that they have heard and seen. So for many blacks it is offensive because white people actually believe all the stereotypes that they hear. Although there are many blacks that believe the stereotypes about whites also, it’s just that the stereotypes about blacks are always negative and racist.

Race Relations Project : Why Is This Racist? Really...

The ideal of an all white basketball league is funny because it is an act of blatant racism. The NBA isn’t all black and it doesn’t discriminate against white players. If you have the talent to play and make it to the NBA then it doesn’t matter your race. Don “Moose” Lewis said that he wants white guys to be able to play a “traditional brand of basketball” what is that. So the basketball that they play in the NBA isn’t traditional because it’s integrated. So Lewis would probably love it if blacks had there own league and whites and Asians and who ever else wanted one, so we can all play traditional basketball.

Race Relations Project : What's With the Theme Parties?

Yeah white people have theme parties but who doesn’t black people and brown people have theme parties also. In all the theme parties that I have been to that white people held the themes weren’t to offend black people but were like highlighter and toga parties, or they were more offensive to other whites then they would be to blacks. Like I know one time my friend was going to a party where they had to dress like “white trash” which is offensive to other white people not anyone blacks. If white people have parties with themes to offend black people then they keep it within small groups where know one knows except the people in attendance.

Race Relations Project : Are Whites the Only People Willing to Humiliate Themselves?

Shows like the bachelor and bachelorette seem to always have a predominantly white cast. I don’t know if it’s because the viewers are predominantly or if that’s who just tries out. But when I think about it maybe it just the stations that recruit people for these shows are just more likely to pick whites. I would have to assume that plenty of people of color audition for these shows because there are so many people who want their fifteen minutes of fame in every race. But when I think about it most of the shows that are on television that are reward based have a predominantly white cast. Maybe that just goes into the fact that there are just more white people on television then any other color. The statistics are somewhere around eighty-six percent white and the rest are people of color. So maybe it’s not the television stations maybe it just stems the fact that television has always been white. Throughout the years from when television started to enter the home scene, television was mostly white; they were in all circuits of television. Blacks weren’t on television as sensible images until TV started emerging and all realms of it changed. Then this era of reality television shows exploded and all you saw on television were people acting stupid and coming up with new ideals to make a good reality television show. When real word first premiered the majority of the cast was white and it was aired on a predominantly white viewed channel. Then the next generations of reality television shows started which seems to be more integrated and were on more major stations like ABC and NBC. But the fact remained that most of the shows that aired were mostly white and most of the people on the shows had this same image of being white and suburban. You never really see just the plain working white girl or white guy from a city. Watching television now makes me wonder why shows like these are predominantly white because they always have been or if they are this way because someone out there wants them to be. And to answer the question are whites the only people willing to humiliate themselves? I would have to say no because there are so many black reality shows that are just as humiliating like the show Baldwin Hills which is silly and shows blacks doing silly things and fighting and people harassing each other. So I feel that it depends on the audience that the show is trying to reach but for the bachelor and the bachelorette to not have any people of color on these shows is baffling because there are many people of color who watch these shows and they should be represented on the show even if there is just one person of color on the show.

I feel that just spreading the word could bring awareness to the problems with the Native Americans A lot of people aren't aware of what happens to the Native Americans or how they are treated and how they are the poorest group of people in America. I feel that if people just spread the word and didn't turn a blind eye to the problem then some change would come.

I think that children should be taught about Native Americans and about what happened to them. Because there is little known information about the Native Americans and they were the first people of the land. When in school we learn about Christopher Columbus and his journey but what about all the people that came before him. Learning there history is good for children so that they are not just oblivious to the Native American culture in general. Also Native American were the first Native people of the United States. Also, mostly everything that surrounds you everyday has something to do with Native Americans and people should be aware of that.

Race Relations Project : Question on Discrimination

But the fact still remains that discrimination in the work place exists and that those who hold the power to hire and fire do not always have the best interest for people of color. It’s sad that people of color are at such a disadvantage just because of there race. How two people can have the same resume but the white person is still more likely to be called back and for blacks males it’s even worst. I guess if you really look at the facts discrimination could account for some of the people in black communities being unemployed. But that’s not to say that discrimination is the only reason that African Americans have a higher unemployment rate then any other race, there are some other things that make up that unemployment rate.

The part that I agree with that you argue is that most white ceo's will hire people that are similar to them. They will hire the elite Ivy League white guys because they are similar to them in interests and characteristics and because they can relate more with someone just like them. With that being said yes some black ceo will when hiring look at applicants more fair because rather then looking at the race they may look at the qualifications that the person holds and if they are right for the job and if they have the skills to do a good job. Also blacks will try to give others blacks a fairer chance when applying for jobs if they believe they are qualified for the job. That’s how some of the organizations that exist today for African American employment came about and why there are black owned businesses that only hire people or color just so that people of color will have a chance in today’s society.

I disagree with some of the things that you said, when you said that people of color generally would hire people of color I would have disagree because you must keep in mind that there are many people that completely distrust people in there own race. So they would choose to hire a white person over a black person. That’s not to say that there aren’t people of color who won't hire other people of color some of the reasons that people of color hire there own race is because some feel that it is there obligation to there race and others just want to as you said feel more comfortable around a group of there peers. Also, I feel that the stigma that is attached to people of color in employees is something that makes employers think twice when they look at someone of color for a job.
