The facts are this - the original contract for $ 147,000 was to repair the damage to the stained glass window itself, half of that amount was paid for out of insurance proceeds. There was no way of making a final determination on the extent of damage to the frame until the stained glass window was removed. Once the stained glass window was removed and the frame inspected a recommendation was made to order a new frame; the repairs the Davenport firm are making (including re-leading) are designed to last 50 years or longer. The Veterans Commission unanimously voted to spend an additional $ 142,000 to purchase a new frame, a frame designed to protect a multi-million dollar piece of art from being damaged in a similar fashion should a similar type event occur in the next half century or so.

Earlier this year Mrs. Sanner, who still lives here in Cedar Rapids, was kind enough to donate a number of copies of hers husbands book to the Veterans Memorial Commission. Her intent was to have those books be used for educational purposes and to tell the story of her husband and his comrades in arms of the WW II generation. For those that have an interest I encourage you to please attend the Veterans Days Services at 10:00 AM this Wednesday, at the Teamsters Hall that Mr. Rasdal mentions. We will have copies of Mr. Sanner's book at the event.

What if we combined efforts here? keep the back in angled parking but instead of just pure parking meters, turn the parking meters into slot machines. That way people could sit on the trunk of their cars, play the slots and have something to attract them to downtown, and generate revenue for the city. We could get rid of parking meter enforcement because if you need to park and go visit relatives at the jail or some other downtown activity, someone is bound to wander buy and start playing your machine/meter.

There is a "Canney Conference Room" this sits off of, or serves as a backroom to, the City Council Chambers on the 4th floor of the Veterans Memorial Building.

The motto of the Special Forces is "De Oppresso Liber" - Latin for "To Liberate the Oppressed" that is exactly what these soliders were doing. The Phillipines has been the forgotten front of the global war on terror. To the families and comrades of these two men, our thoughts and prayers are with you - and to all the operators out there, and their families as well; keep the faith.
