After searching and searching for hours I am now totally confused again about if it is possible (or wise) to upgrade my jailbroken 3GS to a newer 4.x iOS or higher. Help would be very much appreciated!

Firstly some info:

Model : iPhone 3GS (16GB) MC131B
Current iOS : 3.1.3 (7E18)
Current Baseband(modem Firmware) : 05.12.01
first 5 digits of my serial: 88938
Current Lock Status : unlocked with Limera1n
Current Carrier/Network : O2 (UK carrier)
Access to PC or MAC :MAC, but also PC
So far I have used tiny umbrella to backup my SHSH. Here is some snippets of the logs:

You have saved your iPhone3GS 4.3 (8F190) SHSH locally and the request was sent to CYDIA. This means that CYDIA DOES have your SHSH. Do NOT bug semaphore about the Cydia home page showing this version.

The same message above appears for the following :

4.2.1 (8C148a)
4.1 (8B117)
4.0.1 (8A306)
3.1.3 (7E18)
I also get this:

CYDIA DOES NOT HAVE YOUR SHSH FOR iPhone3GS 3.1.2 (7D11) THERE IS NO WAY FOR YOU TO GET THEM. SORRY. YOU ARE JUST TOO LATE. 03/15/2011 09:23:05.424 This device isn't eligible for the requested build.

The same message/warning above appears for the following :

So can someone tell me:
Questions:

1) Can i upgrade my iOS and still preserve my unlock?
2) Which iOS can i upgrade to? 4.1.2 ? 4.3? 5?
3) What is the process i would need to follow (i read lots of different things so far, such as downgrading to 3.1.2 first then upgrading etc...). Using PwangeTool, using Redsn0w etc. Also i read i should get a custom firmware - ipsw?? how to put that onto the device.. but i am not sure which one I need?!. I could really do with a step by step guide from someone with exactly the same setup as me (preferably who was on O2 network and needed the unlock to work)
I would like to keep all the data on my phone so again, how can I ensure no information will be lost (phone or game data)?

I have firmware 3.1.3 and baseband 05.12.01 - currenlty unlocked.
When I click on 'display SHSH' TinyUmbrella says
iPhone3GS for 3.1.3(7E18) and 4.0(8A293) can be resotored safely.
I have never upgraded to 4.0 though via iTunes
I have kept iTunes at 9.1.1
i found and downloaded 378MB iPhone 3GS 4.0 ipsw. I understand i need to restore somehow with this ipsw to 4.0 and than i can unlock.

goal: I want to have an unlocked phone with firmware 4, so i can have multitasking

questions:
1. is there a way to upgrade to firmare 4 without loosing the unlock, as I know 4.1 is released now?
2. why does tinyumbrella say i can restore to 4.0 when i never upgraded to 4, but stayed on 3.1.3?
3. do i need to use .ipsw files or is it enough to click 'Start TTS Server' in TU and follow the proces? how do i restore using ipsw?
4. I presume than ( after restoring with ipsw or just TU<see above>) i can unlock with ultrasn0w?
5. is it safe to upgrade my iTunes to 10?
6. can i store the shsh file localy on my computer, just for extra security?

i have a 3.1.3, but can't downgrade to 3.1.2 ( no shsh saved). I currently have a locked phone, but need the unlock - what's the best option for me to proceed?
