http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/ : Helmet plan shows someone is using their head - Letters, Opinion - Belfasttelegraph.co.uk

Why quote a figure of 180000 when only a fraction of that number will be cyclists? In fact for 2009 according to the DFT the UK had 24,690 serious injuries (for all classes of road user). So assuming a "brain injury" is serious then where does this claimed 180000 figure come from? The killed or seriously injured figure (KSI) for cyclists in the UK in 2009 was 2,710. If we take Northern Ireland's population of 1.5 million to be around 2% of the UK population then the number of cyclists killed or seriously injured will be around 55 per year. Only half of serious injuries are to the head or face. So perhaps 27 head or face injuries of which a helmet may have helped with some of the head injuries. So helmets might help around a dozen cyclists a year in Northern Ireland. A bit different from Headway's 180000 scaremongering figure.
