Give Me Back My Five Bucks : Drawing design inspiration for my place

I just joined pinterest.com and are there are tons of home photos on there. I'm totally obsessed with it and people are always pinning fabulous photos of fabulous spaces (you don't need to be a member to browse, but to pin your own stuff you do, so let me know if you need an invite.). Other than that, designspongeonline.com is great, as is decor8.com and younghouselove.com My recent post On the steps toward making a friend and taking actual action and not just thinking about taking action

HandsIn : Green Lies: Buyers Beware, Not Bewitched

Thanks for the links! I think it's important to know about greenwashing in this day and age when companies like Clorox are cashing in on the green trend. I just can't rationalize buying a "natural" product from a company that loves bleach so much!

HandsIn : 20-Somethings Get Wet

So amazing that this is today's post. Last night my husband and I were talking about how unfair it is that people in America have such a crazy abundance of clean water. We flush our toilets with it. Water our lawns with it. Wash our cars with it and literally let it go to waste and yet in so many other places they can't even get a sip of clean water. Anyway, this is me bragging that I donated my $20 to the cause! Also, as Rachel said, HandsIn is amazing!

This is a great story Lauren! My husband and I, now that we own our own house, planted a tree on Saturday and we both find ourselves peeking out the window to check on it and make sure it's okay.

I am totally addicted to Free Rice! I love it! As for the reusable bags, I can't live without them. I won't go grocery shopping without them anymore. They are stronger and thus hold more items than your average paper or plastic bag.

HandsIn : Daily Discussion: If You Had 1 Million Dollars...

I think I would do something similar to what Brent suggested. It makes sense to spread the money around and help as many organizations as possible. I'd definitely want some of the money to go towards animal rescue efforts (WWF, SPCA, Defenders of Wildlife, various local rescue foundations) across the world and I'd donate to organizations that help educate women and girls where they're considered second rate citizens. I'd want some of the dough to go toward my local women shelters, as I've volunteered with them before and absolutely love the change they push for. I'd probably also want to donate some money to homeless shelters and various veteran's groups as well. I figure I'd go through that million bucks pretty quick...

HandsIn : Got 2 Minutes? Make These Changes

I absolutely LOVE the reusable shopping bags. Not only can I fit more stuff in them than a regular paper bag, but they are SO MUCH stronger. What used to take me five paper bags, not takes me three reusable ones and I can pack them full with a gallon of milk, and 16 other heavy items. Love them!

HandsIn : Daily Discussion: What About Us?

Poverty in America is so different from poverty in other places. Not to discredit the American poor at all, as I was one of those children growing up below the poverty line myself, I think some of it has to do with the fact that the poor in America are living well compared to the poor in third world countries. I spent a year deployed to Kosovo and poverty there looks totally different than it does there. They don't have electricity or access to clean water in many places. It's bad no matter where it is and I think people need to change they way they view people on welfare and food stamps in this country and stop assuming a mother on welfare is a liar and cheating the system. For whatever reason, views of the poor in this country are negative, at least in my experience. I can't even count how many times I've heard people say something like "well, there's no excuse for someone to be poor in America - they just aren't working hard enough." I think until we work on changing that mentality, the poor in America won't get the attention they deserve.

HandsIn : Daily Discussion: Is Boxed Water the Answer?

It's silly right?! I mean, even if there isn't demand for that recycling product, can't they send it elsewhere? Isn't that better than just throwing it in a landfill?

This is very interesting. I like the idea and after checking out the website it seems they are really trying to make a better, more green, product. In America, I absolutely believe water filters should be used more. We can afford it. Third world countries could benefit from this the most, obviously. That said, my local area does not accept cartons for recycling. They used to, but according to their website, the demand for such a product has ceased. Bummer!

HandsIn : Daily Discussion: 30 Seconds of Kindess

Along with smiling at strangers (so long as you're not someplace were it could be consider offensive), I think picking up things others drop is pretty nice. I always make sure to help out when I'm out and a stranger drops something. Returning things people don't realize they've dropped also helps pad the karma meter.
