"I "misplaced" my keys." = Indicates an unintentional lapse of memory or attention "I "misspoke" in a lengthy position statement wherein I endorsed assigning guilt in the absence of evidence; delegating punishment in the form of removal from one's chosen university without recourse; and branding with the stigma of a serious, though unsubstantiated, sexual assault." = Indicates that Polis gave voice to his authentic point of view -- A point of view which would empower an individual or small group, unaccountable to any court of law, to permanently alter the course of a man's life, without evidence or substantiation. When someone tells us who they are, as Polis did here, we should listen. The fact that he issued a lame "retraction" (for political expediency sake) doesn't change his core belief system.

Hey 9835476 -- The fact that changedman2 questions the motivation of those who elected Polis to office does not make him a "gay hater". He questions how some voters may have assessed Polis' qualifications, and how much weight they gave to the fact that he is gay in judging him to be a suitable candidate. I'm going to assume that you believe there were people who DIDN'T vote for him ONLY because he's gay. Will you not concede that there were people who DID vote for him ONLY because he's gay? Or are you one of those who believes that this type of bias only runs one direction? You're clearly one of those people who assigns "hate" to every philosophical or ideological position that doesn't fully embrace your own beliefs/biases.

This "one stupid thing" is indicative of how Polis views the established legal rights of Americans under our constitution and criminal justice system. That's a stupid thing, all right, but it's a very big stupid thing. People have come to America from every country in the world, many of them to escape egregious abuses of power in their home countries: indiscriminate search and seizure; unjustified detainment and imprisonment; lack of due process; anonymous and unsubstantiated testimony by an accuser or witnesses. You: "It doesn't seem that your voting acumen is developed enough for me to respect." Wow, that sounds like something Derek Zoolander would say, dude. Thanks for the chuckle.

Whoa, get a hold of yourself, lissmith. Gay or straight, propositioning is a far cry from rape. But it would be interesting to know if Polis would support the same policy in a scenario like this: Gay guy "in the closet" has sex with another guy, then accuses that guy of threatening to "out" him (in-the-closet-guy), if he refused sex. Again, not rape, but an awful thing to do, IF IT REALLY HAPPENED. Should we expel the accused sexual extortionist based on an accusation?

Polis is a silly little man, made rich by his family business. He's also a knee-jerk compassionate, siding with whomever he perceives to be mistreated or abused. He projects his own insecurities with respect to perceived injury and discrimination onto others, so that he can champion their cause. His policy would jeopardize the futures of wrongly-accused men, but then men are usually bad, right? It's said that Duke paid a $60 million settlement to the three wrongly-accused lacrosse players. Can you imagine what that did to Duke's insurance premiums? In Duke's case, it's a private university, so with the exception of things like government research grants, it's privately funded. In the case of CU and CSU, publicly funded schools, "our" money is at stake. Maybe a rich kid like Polis doesn't think about things like that, let alone destroying the lives of innocent men.

Sad, sad, sad. And very frightening for parents of young people who can sometimes find themselves in the middle of situations they can't predict or control. Yes, they did swallow the drugs. If you live in Boulder and you were a teenager in the 60's-70's, I'm betting many of you swallowed some drugs, too. Some of you may have even had a "bad trip" or two.
Daily Camera.com: : Boulder DA: Officer justified in shooting of CU student on LSD - Boulder Daily Camera

Right, life isn't like the movies. In movies, every scene is scripted and choreographed, especially scenes of violent confrontations. Everyone knows how to move, and everybody knows what's going to happen next. In real-life confrontations, especially with weapons and psychotropic drugs involved, chaos often rules. No matter how well a cop's been trained or how many years he's been a cop, hesitating and trying to predict what might happen next can get people hurt or killed. I'm sure it's not lost on Officer Garretson that Forgy was someone's son, and he wasn't a vicious criminal. He was a guy who made some really bad choices with respect to drugs, and wasn't in his right mind. But he had already injured someone and his behavior was wildly erratic. The officer's duty under the circumstances was to prevent further injury and protect the public. Without the benefit of a script or choreography, he did his job. You can bet he's going to replay the events of that night in his head for the rest of his life.

Daily Camera.com: : Families, advocates take to Boulder\'s Pearl Street Mall to raise awareness of heroin overdoses - Bo

I recognize that chronic, long-term pain is a different problem. There's no question that daily use of opiates to treat that kind of pain can open the door to physical addiction, and for a limited number of people there is no good option. I agree that sometimes it's better to live with a "controlled" opiate addiction and less pain, than to suffer interminably. Doctors can only rely on the subjective feedback of their patients with respect to the level of pain they're experiencing. Some doctors don't adequately monitor patients' meds use, which can result in overmedication; or create the opportunity for sale of "extra" meds on the street. Some doctors who bill themselves as "pain management specialists" don't offer anything but opiates, when there may be other kinds of medication that could offer relief. Chronic pain is a very challenging situation. But this is very different from Noonan's statement suggesting that "a kid with a sports injury" is set up to become an addict. Again, a very simplistic statement which belies the nature of addiction. Between the kids and adults in our family we've had seven sports-related injuries requiring surgeries. Add to that two C-sections; two orthopedic foot surgeries; and a total knee replacement. None of us developed an addiction related to the pain meds we were prescribed. Lucky? No, I think that's typical for people whose life experiences haven't included the kind of painful emotional trauma that addicts seek to alleviate.

Daily Camera.com: : Families, advocates take to Boulder\'s Pearl Street Mall to raise awareness of heroin overdoses - Bo

"But Noonan said health officials want to address the root of heroin addiction, which she said often starts with prescription medication." This kind of thinking is simplistic, and is part of the denial we construct around the true roots of addiction. An emotionally healthy person with a healthy support system is highly unlikely to develop an addiction as a result of a prescription for pain medication. Yes, doctors should monitor such prescriptions more closely than they do. But millions of people are prescribed pain meds every year for injuries or surgical pain, and they don't become addicted to them, or escalate to heroin. The real roots of addiction lie most often in unacknowledged or unaddressed psychic -- or if you will, spiritual -- pain, often experienced many years prior to the development of an addiction. Abandonment (real or perceived), neglect, loss, and abuse are the true roots of addiction. These conditions produce wounds to the soul, to a person's sense of identity, and to a person's view of the world (hope-FUL vs. hope-LESS). So yes, in a person who has sustained this kind of psychic/spiritual damage, exposure to any numbing agent is a potential trigger for addiction. But the root problem is the psychic/spiritual wound, not the prescription meds. It's not my intent to place blame. But any parent or family member who attributes a person's descent into addiction to a prescription for oxycontin after an accident or surgery is in denial. Everybody has to get honest. It's very tough and requires everyone in the addicted system to own their contribution to the problem. Without that, recovery is unlikely.

It's called ego. People who operate out of their egos, especially when their egos are fragile and poorly developed, can't admit when they're wrong. Likewise, they can't truly participate in a dialogue with a person who holds an opposing point of view. They must prevail. Admitting error threatens ego-death, and they can't risk that. They will resort to whatever it takes to protect their ego -- self-aggrandizement ("I know best"), demeaning the intellect of others ("You clearly just don't understand"), and denial ("What traffic? What carbon?") are key. Sorry to go all "shrink" on ya. But I think that's where it all begins.

Yes, the first snow storm, when the streets get a little slippery -- It's possible that many of us might just "accidentally" slide into some of those green sticks. Maybe even some of us with older trucks, with big old solid bumpers? Anyone drive an F350? But before winter comes, doesn't anybody in Boulder remember civil disobedience? Admittedly, this isn't the civil rights movement, or an anti-war effort. In fact, it falls squarely into the category of 1st World Problems. But it's amazing that the Republic of Boulder has become no more than an enclave of "educated", (upper) middle class sheep who whimper and whine and complain, but continue to allow the politburo to determine the quality of their daily lives.
