As a disabled person (brain tumor survivor, epilepsy, stroke, degenerative disk disease in my lower back), I don't have the money I need for a doctor's appointment to obtain "permission." Because I am a veteran, the VA, a federal government facility, won't allow me access to medical marijuana. I suffer, on a daily basis, with pain, anxiety, depression, and seizures. What little hope I have lies in being able to save, penny by penny, enough money to see an independent doctor who will certify me for a card. Nothing that conventional medicine offers has been able to ease my distress. I am 52 years old, childless and, despite a college degree, studies in Europe, tons of work experience and skills, I am unable to hold a job. If the attorney general feels qualified enough with his sanctimonious attitude, to tell me I can't have a non-toxic, safe solution to my pain and disability then, I say to you, Mr. Holton, step into my shoes for a day...

emtgen: When we were in Basic Training, one of the things we had to do was endure a gas chamber. They lined us up, told us to put on our protective masks, then shut us in, turned on the gas and let the chamber fill. We then had to take OFF our masks, and recite the entire grading structure for the Army: private, private1st class, corporal, sergeant, etc. We were allowed to exit once each of us had recited it correctly. One guy ran screaming and hysterical, out of the chamber and smacked right into a tree. He knocked himself out cold. Of course, if the percentages were "equal" among the ranks, maybe at least one female would have reacted hysterically. So, I keep trying to be fair about the whole thing...

Just out of curiosity, Race427, when was this supposed training? And, why are you calling people "gullible?" Are you calling me a liar? Shall I fax you my DD214? Do you even KNOW what a DD214 is?? Most likely, the "under-performance" you think you witnessed was due to the socio-cultural conditioning women have endured for over 2,000 years, that has convinced the women of the world that we are dumber, weaker, more emotional and generally "less than" the mighty male.

Have I offended you? Or, is it more of a threat to your male dominance, that you sense? Poor thing. I wonder what it's like to live with such a narrow, self-important world view?

To Boned: You, too are prehistoric.

NONE of the females in my platoon were gay (including me!) I could handle an M16 better than most of the guys, and had no problems at all, except for the ignorant males who would sexually harrass me and the other women, saying..."Hey, baby...I'd sure like to explore YOUR foxhole!" Made me, (and all the other women) madder than he_l. So, wake up to the 21st century, Mr. Cro-Magnon...

To LetchLuger:

Hot bunking??!! How 'bout I demonstrate, on YOUR body, all the hand-to-hand combat skills and the Tai Kwon Do I learned in the Army? You're disgusting and prehistoric...

I guess, in the end, it goes back to the ancient belief that, as baby-makers, women must not be put at risk. In addition, major religious influences have shaped western society to believe (and reinforce the belief) that women are "the weaker sex." I firmly believe this was founded on a secret fear men have of women: because we are "baby-makers," we are indeed fiercer, more deadly and more able to survive, and are a lot more cold and calculating when it comes to protecting what's ours. It boils down to men wanting to control women, and make sure they are kept out of the "picture" so we don't "take over" the world.
I am enormously proud of my service in the military. I still, to this day, hold my head high with pride and honoro, for being a trail blazer who cleared a trail for women in the military today.

Continuing previous post: I am 5' 1+", and weigh 105 lbs. I was straight out of a sorority in college, and was very accustomed to doing my nails, curling my hair, and wearing makeup and jewelry. The Army changed all that. I, like every single woman I met in the military, rolled with the punches and got the job done.
Granted, back in the dark ages of 1980, females were allowed some "breaks" in the training requirements, but those "breaks" amounted to very little of the overall stress load. Instead of 60 pushups in one minute, we were allowed 55. Instead of running 2 miles in 17 minutes, fully geared up (20+ pounds of gear) we were given 19 minutes. Most of us, by that time, were able to do the 2-mile run in 17 minutes or less.

Science has shown that women can endure extremes in temperature, starvation and dehydration far better than the male physique. Women can endure higher levels of pain, and can, when trained properly, undertake greater physical stress than can men.
In addition, women can be far more deadly in combat: we don't get as emotional about killing "the enemy" as men do. This means we keep a clearer head and can calculate circumstances and evaluate situations with more cold, hard logic.

In 1980, I was in one of the very first platoons of women to be FULLY combat trained. Of the five platoons in our company, 1st platoon was the only female platoon. There were five injuries, and three deaths (from heat exhaustion) during our basic training period. ALL FIVE INJURIES, AND THE THREE DEATHS WERE MALE. None of us females did anything stupid, or hysterical. In fact, every time the drill sergeant threw a canister of CS gas in our faces, the women did exactly what was needed -- donned our protective gear -- while the guys ran, in every direction, screaming, dropping their weapons and letting their petticoats flash...
