I would like to think that Americans could condemn the act of the State dragging citizens before committees and demanding that they rat out their friends for the crime of ideological impurity. I would like to think we could at least condemn the act 6 decades after the fact and 3 decades after the fall of the Soviet Union (is there a Communist threat anywhere in the world today?), but as we can see from the McCarthy defenders here, some people are not willing to make that leap, yet.

And those opposed to this are socialists? That does not compute. "Thankfully enough veterans groups were able to complain and did, that's been shelved." I agree. Veterans groups (across the ideological divide) rightfully opposed this idea. Because no matter what your politics, we all agree that we need government to do certain things, like caring for our veterans (and maintaining police and fire departments, and building roads and schools, and making sure toys don't have date rape drugs in them).

According to Wiki: "The first American novel is sometimes considered to be William Hill Brown's The Power of Sympathy (1789)." That seems awfully late to me. Maybe they mean the first novel after the Revolution. But they have a point. How could an American novel exist before America existed? When I google "first novel written in the new world" I get "El desierto prodigioso y prodigio del desierto" by Pedro de Solís y Valenzuela.
