This is exactly the type of situation state assistance is for. I had the same thing in my family. My mom was a stay-at-home mom when my dad was diagnosed with cancer. He was fired from his job because he was too sick so my family had to go get some state help while he went through chemotherapy. My mom immediately went back to school and work. She earned her MBA because she knew she had to take care of her family and sick husband. Ultimately, we need the state assistance for when those unforeseeable events happen. But there are too many people taking advantage of it. Maybe the woman in the article has a similar story to mine but for each person who legitimately needs help it seems like there are a dozen more lined up to game the system.
