Exploring The Mind! : Does Being Overweight Damage Your Brain?

Hi Michael, some good points. The point about body proportion is not especially relevant - brains ar brains. But the cause and effect question needs some follow up.

That is a good question and one it appears that researchers are looking at. I know they sorted out for people with various conditions - but it is a great lineof questioning

Hi Helen, It is different in the UK. In the U.S. anyone can become a "CHT" without any real testing or education, you can even get one by mail order. So it is important here to make sure the therapist has a real background in psychology.

I am with you - "image" is more of a figure of speech when talking about self image. Things are changing fast with fMRI. I am changing my view of the subconscious to the adaptive conscious just now. The more you study, the more you find you don't know... which is pretty cool!!!

Hi Debbi, Thanks for commenting. I am not against you practicing hypnosis - it is the misrepresentation of practioners that are not licensed or without a background in psychology making it seem as if they do. CHT can look official after someone's name, but as you know they are extremely easy to get. Anyway, a lot of practitioners who are not psychologists do good work, especially when they focus in on one area. As long as their clients know their background and have expectations set correctly, all is good. I prefer that any therapist I use be steeped in both practice and education (maybe this is just a hang up of mine being raised in college town!). About EFT, some of the therapist we publish also use some type of tapping therapy in conjunction with hypnosis. EFT is one of many tapping type techniques derived from the work of Callahan a long time ago. The research isn't there at all, but there are a lot of good stories out there about it.

Hi Randy, That is a good question. I don't believe this study was referring to self image in the way you are taking it. They are referring to the construct of "self image" not necesarily in the visual system. My understanding is that we use all of our senses as we build our self concept. I think the visual component is just one aspect of this.

Hi Julia, The program sometimes works instantaneoously but for some it takes 3-4 weeks to see the changes in your behavior. I appreciate you taking the time - please make sure you are awake and you might try listening in the morning. Interesting comment about who it is designed for - I have not heard that! Just remember that you are in control of the sessions. We have a lot of people who have used to just lose the last 10 pounds. Just knowing this might help - it is not just for obese people (far from it). You could create your own recording - using your own voice can be powerful - you just have to find an induction that works for you and you can pick suggestions that Roberta gives that resonate with you. You do have to be real careful with the suggestions so they don't cause conflice and are healthy and ecological. This is why we use a weight loss psychologist

Hi Nancy and thank you Andrea! Most people can use hypnosis to their benefit and there is a lot of debate about this (so take my answer as my perspective). We define hypnosis as a state of focused attention where you are able to get deeper into the adaptive concsiousness (where most of your decisions are really made). The experience of this subjectively is different for everyone. You may be expecting a DEEP trance and thus think you are not being, "hypnotized". The deep hypnosis is something that not everyone can do easily, but it is not important as depth of trance has very little if anything to do with results. For me, the experience of hypnosis is like reading a good book. I am absorbed, but if the phone rang I would answer it! Anyone who can be absorbed in a book or a movie can use hypnosis. A lot of it depends on the therapist doing hypnosis and whether you feel you trust them or not.

Hi Jim, that is interesting - if you snoring, it is most likely you are not getting the full benefit because you are asleep. Hypnosis is a state of focused attention much more than being relaxed. In fact, one of the therapists who we publish uses a "race car" induction for her male adolescent clients - not relaxing at all! I would try sitting up in bed or listening in the morning.

Hi Bernie, We have a couple of programs depending on the issue. We have what I think is the best self esteem program by Dr. Shirley McNeal. It is for pure self-esteem issues. http://www.hypnosisnetwork.com/hypnosis/self_este... But more specifically for MLMs we have a program for sales people that reduces the fear of prospecting, helps organize your day, and helps you with your presentation - it is endorsed by Blair Singer of The Rich Dad organization: http://www.hypnosisnetwork.com/hypnosis/sales_pro...

Hi Sharon, if she is actually falling asleep then it is not helping her probably! A good way to find out if she is sleeping versus being in a deep trance is to see if she wakes up at the end. If she wakes up, she was in trance. If she does not, then she was asleep! The best way to counter act that is to sit cross-legged while listening. Let me know!

Hi! For full disclosure, we publish hypnosis audio programs created by the cream of the crop in terms of psychologists who practice hypnosis. Dr. Roberta Temes created a program that is getting results with over 9 out of 10 people (which is pretty good in the weight loss arena). We have a way for you try her program for just the cost of shipping: http://www.hypnosisnetwork.com/hypnosis/ewl/speci...

That is a good question; I can't wait to see what the future holds for this type of research. About stress eating - there is a lot of debate around this. It intuitively makes sense that we "stress eat" and the research is compelling that stress causes an increase in cortisol that leads to belly fat. However, most research points to idea that people eat more out of boredom and environmental primes than for stress related reasons. In Dr. Temes CD, for example, she helps you reset the primes and helps you occupy your time with rewarding activities (that prevent you from running to the fridge!!)
