I for one love the look of real flickering candles. I also love the smell of wax. You can put wax candles into glass chimneys to avoid some of the pitfalls you mentioned.

Ahh! They are beginning to set up the plants and lighting on the near side of the house. It is looking so good! I wish I could dig in there with them, smell the soil and get my hands dirty.
